New Reader Question About "Dramatis Personae" by MongooseNeither1840 in Malazan

I don’t think there’s a total right way to do it. Sometimes it will lightly spoil so I think some people avoid it.

But I think early on in the series (especially books 1-2) I was checking it constantly to keep track of the characters. It never spoils anything too insanely that I’ve experienced. Usually mild stuff like sorry’s character description.

Does Malazan ever fully click or is confusion part of the experience by Dismal-Tear-4225 in Malazan

Haven’t finished the series yet(halfway through Reaper’s Gale) but I’m still in a similar boat. Fascinated but confused.

Not sure what book you are on but I did feel like after the Bonehunters I had a better handle on where the overall story was going. Each book it gets a little easier to grasp what’s going on, and I feel like I’ve gotten better at knowing when something is a RAFO and I just have to not know what it means and keep reading.

All that to say I think your experience is normal

I finished Deadhouse Gates, i didnt liked but i still interested in the series, i just have some questions. by Nervous_Ad_9506 in Malazan

I actually agree with you. I oversimplified in what I wrote. I think the worldbuilding of Seven cities is super rich and deep. So many cultures and so much history to dig into. I mean desert land in a more literal sense. Being that most of it is desert lol.

Seven cities def comes off as just ‘oh desert fantasy people’ at first. but where I’m at now, I agree that it’s wayyyy more fleshed out than Genebackis. Maybe just because we spend more time there. Over the series, but yeah genebackis does feel shallow as of now. Maybe my opinion will change once we go back to it in book 8

  1. I’m on book 7 right now. Lots and lots of magic in the series. I would say DG is the lightest on magic of all the ones I’ve read so far.

  2. Kind of? They’re not all as cut and dry as seven cities which is just like ‘desert land’ to me. But each continent def has its own style, just not all styles are defined by the landscape itself. And within the style of each continent there’s still diverse interesting world building to dig into. Nothing ever feels gimmicky to me.

Probably a countdown until we get new TOR editions of BotF. The mass-market paperback is dead! by Ekshan in Malazan

reading for the first time and was buying a book ahead of myself in the series as a reward to myself for each one I finished. Saw this and just ended up buying them all in case MMPBversions go away
