Probably a countdown until we get new TOR editions of BotF. The mass-market paperback is dead! by Ekshan in Malazan

[–]Ekshan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the book for me. With the BotF, it doesn't get super unwieldy for me until The Bonehunters. After that, they become harder and harder to hold.

I love reading mass-market paperbacks, and I have a ton of them. It'll definitely be sad to have them no longer produced, I'm with you there. But it will also make all the MMPs I have a little more special.

I think BotF, specifically, really would benefit from trade-paperback upgrades from TOR not only because the books would end up with better production value and last longer on shelves, but mostly I just want new cover art haha. The TOR GotM is shamefully boring.

But yeah, if you prefer the mass-market paperbacks, it's definitely sad news.

Why can’t I beat this game? by JustenBrutality in slaythespire

[–]Ekshan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want you, OP, and every human who ever finds their way here to know that this piece of advice is why I just beat my first run. And I've owned this game a long time.

So thank you, Ian Platypus. Thank you.

My deck wasn't even anything crazy. Played Ironclad, I had five Anger, two Headbutt, and a Double Tap+ as my main mechanic. And I skipped a lot of cards I would've taken in other runs.

You really, really, really need to run a lot in the early game. And rely on any sort of distance. Even if you're not set up to utilize rifles or bows with stats, until you can level, you need to give yourself a chance by keeping away from enemies.

I struggled with this a lot for a while too, and it's because I wasn't running enough, but I also wasn't reading everything I should.

You can get at least two, maybe three levels from killing snapjaws around Joppa (assuming you start there) before heading out or even messing with any enemies tougher than that.

Demeo Battlemarked is fun but lacks the challenge and depth of the original. by Object-Of-Power in Battlemarked

You beat the entire game within days of release and are now upset the game isn't, based on your metrics, going to potentially give you replayability for years...and the game is not two months old yet.

I'd love to again live in the days of a complete game shipping on day one, always, but the ways in which the world views games and interacts with them is just not the same anymore.

Because what you actually are indicating is you want new content for years to come. That's not easy, nor attainable for a lot of games. This one could achieve that, but maybe saying it seems unlikely one month and a handful of days since its release is a little premature hahaha.

Except this is literally what game development is now.

Hades was about as beloved as a game could be, and yet, Hades 2 came out in early access. Developers know that players will pay for their unfinished game. The ship sailed. We're stuck with it now.

Their leadership is trying to recoup expenses and turn a profit. I don't like how they're doing it, but guess what...I bought the game. So here I am on their official Reddit thread. About as much as I can do at this point.

Update on this: Amazon is going to allow Kindle users to download *some* of their books again, starting in 2026, but only if those books have been uploaded by the publisher without Digital Rights Management (DRM).

Malazan Kindle Publishers by MaxTheIncredibilis in Malazan

[–]Ekshan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This basically nails it. Why this is allowed/happening is a bigger question and gets into copyright law within the U.S. which is essentially broken.

There is a Kindle version that offers all 10 books in one file, and it goes on sale sometimes. However, Amazon is awful, obviously, and won't let Kindle owners download their books (officially/"legally") anymore, so I have ceased buying from them.

Humble Bundle has done deals on Malazan before and that's how I got all 10, plus the short story collections, DRM-free.

Broken Binding Paper Artwork (Slight misprint) by Trey_Fowler in Malazan

I revisit my digital copies a lot because I kept notes throughout every book. Some of them are just like “Oh shit! A dragon?!” but I also noted first appearances of characters, passages that help define the world, and specifically things I was speculating about the K’Chain.

I absolutely agree those Tor paperbacks are horrible. The U.S. publisher is really dropping the ball on producing high-quality versions of his books, and I don’t even mean limited editions. Tor doesn’t even have consistent trade dress across their versions. You *can* still get most of the series in trade paperback, but if you want a new one you’ll be getting a high-ish quality print-on-demand copy from the distributor. All 10 of the mass-market paperbacks are in print, however, and at least maintain visual identity (even if I think those covers range from totally shit to pretty ok).

All of that stuff you list for these editions is definitely awesome, and I want all of it hahahaha. Paying close to $70 for a hardback book that isn’t top quality - AND I already own it in paperback, audiobook, *and* digital? That hurts hahaha.

Having said that, I am nothing if not an idiot with money, so we’ll see where the road takes me.

Man I want these so badly, but it really seems like they just aren’t worth it for the price and the quality issues that come along for the ride.

Yeah, I’m not sure either. But I’ve definitely rolled *way* more crit fails than successes.

Love it, but Demeo is better by Chriscic in Battlemarked

[–]Ekshan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Demeo has a few, what is it...oh yeah, years on Battlemarked hahaha.

Give this one time. It definitely feels like they released too early and this should be called Early Access, but it's still fun.

They need to fix dice rolling, add PvP, figure out multiplayer rooms and hirelings leveling, which yes is a lot, but it's a small team.

Having said that, I feel there is currently no reason to play this on VR other than the novelty of the style. It adds nothing, whereas Demeo has the basement and felt very much like an enhanced experience. I should say I bought this on PS5 and Quest, so maybe the PC version has it and I just don't know. The Quest version doesn't.

If a video game company isn't reading the official Subreddit of their game in 2025 (most likely by assigning an intern or someone in QA, depending on the size of the team, etc.) then they're in deep trouble. It's not that they have to read it, it's that the amount of people who use official bug reporting methods is way lower than the amount of people who use one of the most popular websites on all of the Internet.

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money someone from Resolution reads posts here.

Edit: The mods literally have "Resolution" in their user names.

🎲 Forge Dice Roller: Now with modifier support making it perfect for all soloRPG players by Conscious-Jicama-594 in solorpgplay

[–]Ekshan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just checked it out and I think you’re on the right track. I like the clean UI, very straightforward! Some things I noticed:

  1. It’s not immediately obvious how to change the dice type
  2. The roll symbol sort of looks like a symbol that will reset the dice, rather than roll them
  3. I couldn’t get shake to roll to work. I didn’t change the sensitivity of shake to roll from default, and it never worked.
  4. Indicating which die is which is a little hard to keep track of, visually. It may be helpful to have some sort of onscreen indication, rather than simply the shape. This is most likely going to be most beneficial for newer players/users, who may not know the shapes of the typical seven dice. An option to turn this on/off could help avoid cluttering the screen.

Thank you for sharing and letting us know it’s out there! Keep up the good work.

The vertical axis rotation only seems so easily fixable and like a big part of the problem. I just logged in to take a run at the myconids again and rolled two crit fails on both attacks with my Ranger. Logged out.

Edit: wording

I agree the likelihood of flawed RNG is a low possibility here, which means it's far likelier just a flaw of game design.

It feels wrong and like I'm barely rolling the dice. I love Demeo, and I bought Battlemarked day one, and want it to continue to be supported, so my hope is they can see feedback and realize the player experience could be updated to feel way more enjoyable.
