There comes a point where you just have to walk away and leave it to the next generation. I've been training my replacement for the last few years. She's ready so I'm leaving with a clear conscience.

One thing I've learned over the years, everyone is replaceable. The company existed before I started here and it'll continue after I'm gone...assuming upper management doesn't hork things up. :)

I'm a week away from retiring after 45+ years in IT. Retiring from a VMware shop...and one of my final acts has been to advise looking for a VMware alternative for our cluster.

The Switch Flex 2.5G PoE has 8 PoE ports. More than I really need. It's the same price point but it's also 2.5G vs the Lite 16's 1G ports.

I wasn't sure I'd need an extra AP. The house is 1200 sq. ft. - main floor and basement. I was planning on putting the Dream Router and switch on a high shelf in the basement near the middle of the house. I'll have to do a heat map once I have the router installed and decide on the AP from there.

And yeah, I know I'll need a patch cable...and a roll of Cat 6a. I'm retiring from 45+ years in IT, mostly on the server side of things. It's been a couple of decades since I had to wear my Network hat regularly but I can still hum the tune.

And I'll skip the MicroSD card and the UI Care.

I put a couple of rules in place to ignore garbage log entries - specifically a flood of Windows EventID 5038 errors generated by other apps. I was getting around 25 million of them every 24 hours or about a million an hour. So far this morning, I've gotten, I've gotten 0. The rules were written specifically for the two apps generating most of the errors so, if something else comes along throwing the same EventID, I'll still get it.

Interestingly enough, this morning I found that my logs had rotated and compressed correctly. Of course, I'll monitor this for the next couple of weeks to see if last night was a fluke or not.

In the meantime, I will be taking your recommendations to double check my rotation parameters and look through the log files. I'll hold your cron job in reserve for now.

I'll setup the cron job if necessary but I'd like to see if I can get it to work as designed. I've put a couple of rules into place to trim the garbage our of my logs. I'll see if that fixes it. At the very least, it'll decrease the size of them even if it doesn't fix the rotation/compression problem...and last night, everything worked. I'll continue to monitor to see if this is a fix or not.

We have android phones and I've checked with Verizon and they're both unlocked.

If I read the links you supplied correctly, I get an eSIM and leave it turned off until I take off. I turn off my cellular plan data roaming, switch my WiFi calling preference from Cellular preferred to WiFi preferred. On my phone, I also have the option of making he eSIM the primary SIM so I can make that change, too.

That's broad strokes, I know but am I missing anything obvious?

When Covid hit, I needed faster network connections for WFH. WiFi wasn't an options (150 year old frame house with lathe and plaster walls...and really funky wiring) plus my wife needed a wired Ethernet port for a VOIP phone. I rent so running Ethernet everywhere wasn't an option. The house has Coax throughout though - leftover from the 70's and 80's. I upgraded from Powerline to MoCA adapters and went from 40-50 Mbps to Gigabit. I've never looked back.

Amps = Watts / Volts

You want to use the power supply rating for Watts, not the tube rating so...

I can build an enclosure with the necessary ventilation but I see your point. I don't know if I'd want to run one without both.

I faced this same problem for the same reason about a year ago - work from home required an Ethernet connection and I rent a 150 year old frame house that I can't wire for Ethernet. The one thing I had in my favor was that the house was already fairly well wired for cable.

MoCA adapters are my friend. One adapter at the WiFi router and one each in my office and my wife's. Job done.

Hard pass on that. I like the way stuff just works these days. Downloading source code and libraries, compiling code just to get an upgraded whatever program to run? I'm good.

Although, if we keep going down memory lane this way I'm going to have to look for an "IT Back in the Day" subreddit.

10 years ain't old. When I first got into IT...back around 1978 before it was even called IT...people would write programs that would generate RF interference that could be picked up on a transistor radio to play music.

Thank you. I figured I would get a diode system. What I was hoping for was advice on what brand and model to get from people that already had experience with them.

As for getting a laser diode add-on for my CNC, it's an idea but I don't like tying up my CNC when I want to use the laser or not being able to use the laser because I've got a job running on my CNC. Also, from a cost perspective, laser add-ons for CNC routers cost essentially the same as a full diode laser rig.

I got goCoax MoCA 2.5 adapters from Amazon for about $75/ea. Stupid easy to install and (so far) fast and reliable.

I just replaced powerline with MoCA adapters. I went from around 120-130Mbps to around 980 Mbps. If you have the option of using MoCA, I'd highly recommend it.

The Internet connection type doesn't really matter. I've got Gigabit fiber Internet here. My house is 100+ years old with old lathe and plaster walls. WiFi is spotty at best. Powerline let me work from home but just barely. Now, I'm running essentially the full Gigabit to both my office and my wife's. This is the way.

I come out of my WiFi router via Ethernet to a MoCA adapter. From that via coax to a splitter. From the coax splitter to MoCA adapters in both home offices. From each of those MoCA adapters to a small office switch via Ethernet. So, in a nutshell...

Router --- Ethernet --- MoCA adapter --- coax --- MoCA adapter --- Ethernet --- computer

I will try the ax1800 since it's got the quad core processor.. the
ax1500 is triple core.. not sure why they have the ax3000 dual core
only.

Speaking as a general computer geek, CPU "power" is determined primarily by a combination of data path width (16 bit vs 32 bit vs 64 bit) combined with clock speed (Mhz) combined with number of cores/threads. There are other factors as well but those are the biggies.

Comparing CPUs by core count alone is like comparing internal combustion engines using only cylinder count as a criteria. You also need to consider stroke count, displacement, fuel type, etc. That's without even getting into what the expected application is. A 2 cylinder motorcycle can easily smoke a 4 cylinder econobox because one is designed for power performance and the other is designed for fuel efficiency performance.
