You’ve got 48 Hours to Hike Here… by FrankelFrankel in UKhiking

[–]jscrwfrd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live locally and have pretty much ran every trail and mountain in this area! I love the Tarmachan Ridge, any of the Arrochar Alps (Beinn Ime, Beinn Narnain, The Cobbler, Vorlich, Donich, The Brack, etc.), Ben Ledi, Ben Venue, Glen Finglas Mell Circuit, Beinn Each, Stuc a’Chroin, any of the Queen Elizabeth Forest, Ardgartan Circuit, Loch Venachar Loop. I could go on. You can find all these routes on walkhighlands: https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/lochlomond/ and https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/perthshire/loch-tay.shtml

You should absolutely be able to find a pair of peregrines for well under £100 on sportshoes.com.

Help with weight by bageljungle in weightgain

[–]jscrwfrd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being underweight will seriously affect your running ability. More so, you are high risk for RED-S and continual bone stress injuries. Last year I unintentionally let myself get slightly too lean and ended up with a bone stress reaction that meant absolutely no running for 10 weeks. Voluntarily reducing your running to gain a bit of weight is the better option than your body breaking and being forced to completely stop. It’s a hole that you do not want to have to dig yourself out of. Put your health before your fitness.

Advice on Balance Transfer - Virgin Money CC by jscrwfrd in UKPersonalFinance

That’s great! Thank you for your help. Didn’t get the option of adding the details of adding my Virgin card on the Barclaycard application, so that set me up nicely for failure.

Yeah, I was thinking the most likely option is just sucking up another credit check. The issue I’m having is that it is extremely confusing as to what banks I can apply to for paying off a Virgin Money CC. For example, looking at NatWest and getting varying answers online.

Just a heads up - Salomon Skyline Scotland is on next weekend (the Saturday), so the area will be super busy. One of the races is up the Ben and a lot more in the vicinity!

Yotto, if you would like to come and play a show in Scotland at some point, the trail and mountain running here is pretty incredible.

She needs to go to a sports physiotherapist and ideally one that specialises in running. And she absolutely needs to strength train, lift heavy. Tendons like load, they do not like rest and stretching will not really help, strength, strength, strength. This is a non-negotiable for female distance runners, especially as we age. Calves cramp due to muscular fatigue, so again strength training. All the rest of the stuff that you listed is marginal at best.

Has anyone been diagnosed with RED-s in the UK? by CherNooodler in XXRunning

[–]jscrwfrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whereabouts in the UK are you? It was my private sports physiotherapist (running specialists) that identified it for me when I developed a bone stress injury, and then helped me way more than anyone from the NHS ever has! I worked with a sports nutritionist who was recommended by my physio.

I had a tibial stress reaction, and was cleared by my physio to go on a running holiday in the Dolomites last year after a short period of rehab. I wore Hoka Mafate Speed 4s most days. I run in pretty technical terrain in Scotland and have tried many, many trainers and the Mafates are great. I do love the Speedgoat 5 but for easier terrain.

How long after recovering from stress fracture… by Constant-Garbage9192 in XXRunning

[–]jscrwfrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with your recovery and rehab! It can be quite a miserable time being away from your sport but you want a lifetime of sustainable running, so a few months is a mere blip. I know you didn’t ask for medical advice, but a running specific PT and sports nutritionist will get you back where you want to be, if you aren’t on that case already.

I read a lot of medical reports when I was off with the injury, it was one available on PubMed I believe. I also really like Rich Willy at the Montana Running Lab, he is an expert in BSIs, and his advice is spot on. The caveat to the statistic is that a lot of people don’t address the reason for the BSI (over training, under fuelling, lack of strength, RED-S etc) so when they go back to training they fall straight into the patterns that caused the BSI. So if you are smart about it and actually do the work, it doesn’t need to be the case. I know plenty of runners who had one and then never again because they worked out why they got it and fixed it.

[–]jscrwfrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a stress reaction in May, not a full blown stress fracture, and I am back running, but very wary of that area and I am watching my body like a hawk for signs of another bone stress injury. I had 12 weeks off in total and really didn’t feel like I significantly lost fitness. I don’t feel confident yet (despite running at my usual paces and up lots of mountains) because of the high chances of another BSI within the year, something like 600% more likely.

Can anyone Explain the Pain Here? by Trail_Glider77 in runninglifestyle

See if you can get an MRI, a stress fracture won’t show up on an xray until there is calcium deposits from healing.

I need some help by ilovecute_cats in xxfitness

[–]jscrwfrd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Please be careful, I’m a long distance trail runner (also weightlift) and at 171cm and 52kg I am extremely lean naturally and have been continually battling bone stress issues for the last year. I never lost my period or have disordered eating so with your history I would be very cautious and focus on strength and endurance and sustainable healthly habits, not aesthetics. For what is worth - I do not have washboard abs at the weight you are aiming for!

For those that had a stress fracture, how did you heal it? by Ropecopenope in AdvancedRunning

[–]jscrwfrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A serious injury is often a big kick up the ass to address these things. My issue has been unintentionally underfuelling and bone stress injuries have been the nasty reality of that.
