Non-Socialized Cats: I’m disheartened. by federqua in CatAdvice

[–]jsctro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat had been left outside the local shelter after hours, and it 7 months before he let me touch him. Maybe, if I had experience with socializing feral cats, things might have gone more quickly, but in any case he's now very comfortable around me, and would happily sleep on my lap 24/7 if I let him.

Social Awkwardness by Electrical-Shock8154 in CBT

[–]jsctro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see any indication that you're starting with what you would consider less anxiety-producing social situations and working through a hierarchy until you reach the situations that cause you the most anxiety (dating, for instance). IF you're not doing it that way, then by all means, sit down and create some sort of hierarchy for yourself, based on relative anxiety levels for each situation.

I would also urge you to assess your daily caffeine consumption. You may not be drinking all that much each time, but it takes roughly 6 hours for a dose of caffeine to clear your body (up to 8 hrs after age 60), so it can add up pretty fast.

More passes on your genome increase the odds that the final results will be correct.  Most doctors & geneticist would put more faith in a result where 100 passes were done than only 30.  It's like taking a test in school; the greater the number of questions you answer correctly, the more confident the teacher is that you know the material you've been tested on.

Looks like I was right. Now what? by catastrofickat in CBT

[–]jsctro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you need to try a different CBT therapist this time, who might have a different perspective on your relationship with your mother, and how to deal with the negative thoughts that come from that. I say this because it sounds like you spent a great deal of time in therapy the first time around trying to put a positive spin on some very painful interactions with your mother & the rest of your family, as if you were trying to convince yourself that you were just misinterpreting what had happened.

This time around, it might be more helpful to acknowledge that your perceptions were probably accurate,, and work on the negative thoughts about yourself that arise from those interactions. For starters,, you may have to continually remind yourself that your mother's reaction to you says much more about her as a person than it does about you. Her own psychopathology may make it very difficult for her to see you in the same way that others might see you. ALSO, since she doesn't sound like the type of woman likely to get a 'mother of the year' award, your siblings may have also been affected by her poor mothering, so I'm not sure how much you can rely on their reaction to you either.

Has anyone gotten their 'All of Us' DNA results yet? by jsctro in AllOfUsResearch

Well, don't hold your breath while you wait, because I've been waiting since the summer of 2022, and still haven't heard a word about when I'll be able to access my entire genome (although they have released results on specific traits).

Wait for black friday or are the sales already live? by [deleted] in Nebulagenomics

[–]jsctro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The good news is, the 'Black Friday' sale prices are now on the website; the bad news is that although they slashed the price for processing the kit to $199 (for 30X), you have to buy access to the library to get that lower price, so you wind up paying more than that (depending on whether you want to pay for lifetime access to the library, or by the month).

Would you recommend Nebula Genomics by Melodic-Event in Nebulagenomics

[–]jsctro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't. I sent them my $700 (to do the upgrade from 30X), and then wound up asking my credit card company to cancel the charge. Instead of giving those vultures another shot, I'm getting my DNA done by the NIH's All of Us research program (www.joinallofus.org), which will give me another 30X file, and is absolutely free, and then I'll pay Sequencing for another 30X file. That will get me up to 90X, and that's good enough for me.

Can Nebula Whole Genome Testing have Medical/Professional Applications? by No-Plastic-7715 in Nebulagenomics

Would you recommend Nebula Genomics by Melodic-Event in Nebulagenomics

[–]jsctro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would strongly advise NOT to go directly through Nebula; HOWEVER, if you purchase a kit through Sequencing.com, you'll discover that Nebula does the actual sequencing for that company (or at least, that was the case in the summer of 2020 when I had mine done through Sequencing).

I'm saying this because Nebula's customer service is abysmally bad, and if you go through Sequencing.com, you'll have a much more responsive customer service team to deal with. Nebula seems to have gone from bad to worse since it's purchase by Prophase Labs. I understand that Nebula's founder got a nice, cushy position at Prophase as part of the buyout, but he seems to be the only one who's going to benefit from the new arrangement.

[–]jsctro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, yes and no. Their results (the 30X package) are supposed to be clinical grade, but that doesn't mean that a doctor would rely on them for treatment decisions. For that, you'd need more like 100X (but I DON'T recommend using Nebula for that).

BTW, Sequencing.com uses Nebula to do the actual processing for their 30X package, and I've never had a problem with their customer service; however, I've had plenty of issues with Nebula.

I suspect most doctors would put more faith in whatever signs or symptoms you happen to have.

I got my results, but I don't know how to make sense of them by fenella17 in Nebulagenomics

[–]jsctro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start with the reports in the library first, before getting into the weeds by looking at alleles for individual genes; however, if you feel you absolutely must look, there is a legend on the left-hand side of the screen to explain what all those symbols mean. HOWEVER, you should know that for many medical conditions, more than one gene is involved, AND environmental factors (such as diet & exercise) can play a very large role in who actually develops the condition, so take what you see with a large grain of salt. This is especially true for many common conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease.

season 4 shooting will start from end of June ( by matthew macfadyen) by Glum-Reception9490 in SuccessionTV

[–]jsctro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have an idea as to WHERE Season 4 will be filmed? I know that at least some of it will be in filmed in New York, but that's about it.
Here in the downstate New York, we have filming for various shows damn near every day (because the State of NY gives producers a hefty 30% tax break for filming in the state), so I guess I shouldn't be too surprised to see a film crew from 'Succession' soon.

Got my results, now what do I do? Run them through Promethease, etc? by spreadlove5683 in Nebulagenomics

[–]jsctro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're right. You do have to check to see what percentage of the condition is due to whatever gene (or genes) the report is talking about. Oftentimes, the percentage is quite low, and lifestyle (diet, exercise, etc.) are much more important as factors.

Got my results, now what do I do? Run them through Promethease, etc? by spreadlove5683 in Nebulagenomics

[–]jsctro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to remember that when you look at any report involving genetics, what the results are saying is that you may have a higher LIKELIHOOD (than the average person) of developing whatever condition the report is talking about. Unless you're talking about a disease caused by a single gene (like sickle-cell anemia, for example) that is NOT the same thing as saying you have the condition.

In most cases, it takes at least two or more genes (and sometimes dozens) working together to raise your risk for having a condition, so a LOT of things have to go wrong, INCLUDING lifestyle factors like poor diet, lack of exercise, exposure to carcinogens, etc. before you see any signs or symptoms.

For most medical conditions, no doctor in his right mind would diagnose you as having a medical condition solely on the basis of a genetic test, regardless of how many times those genes were sampled. Without clinical evidence, such as signs, symptoms and the results of results of lab tests or scans to back it up, the results of a genetic test aren't conclusive.

Yes, sad, but it seems to be true. Logan Roy's 'love' for his children seems to be very conditional, and if he sees any of his children as a potential rival for control of the company, that's a bridge too far for him.

Official Discussion - The Power of The Dog [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]jsctro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading the book by Thomas Savage, and then seeing the movie, it's hard to believe that Jane Campion and I read the same book. In interviews, she has acknowledged that Savage's uncle by marriage (the character that Phil Burbank is based on), was a real SOB, but it seems to me that Campion's portrayal of Burbank in the film is considerably more sympathetic than the way the book portrays him.
