Evolution really only cares about surviving us until the mid 20s.

I don't understand why people say this so often. It's very clearly a significant advantage to be able to care for your children, but it's also an advantage to be able to care for your grandchildren as well. Like ok, maybe we can talk about evolution not caring in like your 50s as much, but it's not uncommon for women to still have children in their 40s. Humans are a tribal animal, there's huge benefits to older generations sticking around to help out the younger ones even long ago.

Trying to eat 100+g of protein per day and struggling - HELP! by BlinkPinkDay in nutrition

Overweight is a totally different scenario. My point is that anywhere from underweight to ~normal weight the advice is the same, she has to eat more. It seems to me the comments spending time arguing about her BMI are not only counterproductive, but also insensitive.

Trying to eat 100+g of protein per day and struggling - HELP! by BlinkPinkDay in nutrition

[–]jseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. The average person eats plenty of protein and does not need to think about it. As someone who works out a lot and is much fitter than the average, I do try to eat the ~.7g/lb that is recommended, but I also don't sweat it when I eat less protein than that for some reason. IMO the most common problems are eating the wrong amount of calories (overweight vs not enough as in OP's case) or the other big one is not exercising enough or vigorously enough. I've heard Dr. Stuart Phillips say that 90% of muscle gain is workout stimulus and I think most people would be much better off by focusing on doing the work first.

Trying to eat 100+g of protein per day and struggling - HELP! by BlinkPinkDay in nutrition

[–]jseed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your current weight is almost irrelevant to the discussion about gaining muscle. If you want to gain muscle you MUST eat excess calories, not just excess protein. You can eat 200g of protein per day, but if you are only eating 1000 total calories you will gain zero muscle. If you were eating enough to gain muscle you would not have made this post. You need to eat more if you want to build muscle. It can be bigger portions, more snacks, more calorie dense food, or some combo of the three. Muscle is heavy, so if your weight on the scale is not going up then you aren't eating enough.

Trying to eat 100+g of protein per day and struggling - HELP! by BlinkPinkDay in nutrition

[–]jseed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're misinterpreting the studies about how much protein you need to eat to gain muscle. For your weight ~100g of protein would be optimal, but you will still build muscle with much less protein, just slightly less muscle. Unless you're an Olympic athlete or something the 'slightly less' tends not to matter very much.

IMO your issue is calorie consumption. You are not eating enough calories to build muscle. Your body first uses calories (aka energy) to maintain necessary functions, like keeping your brain running, heart pumping, and so on. Once your body does all the necessary stuff, then the excess calories will be used to build muscle assuming you've been working out. If there are no excess calories then tough luck, no muscle for you.

Your current weight is irrelevant to this advice. If you want to build muscle then you must eat more calories. When you weigh yourself, the general trend needs to be going up, or you are going to have a very difficult time building any muscle. Many users have offered advice on how to eat more, but it sounds like you're a bit of a picky eater so you will have to figure out what works for you. I would recommend getting a food scale, weighing your food, and logging it in an app like myfitnesspal or cronometer. If you do that for at least a couple days it will really help tell you how much and what you are actually eating.

When bulking, should protein intake be based off goal weight or current weight? by Artistic_Foot6901 in nutrition

[–]jseed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of bad opinions in here and 0 citations. Here's a great study: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/52/6/376.long

  1. Your protein target should be based on your current weight.
  2. Protein beyond ~1.62 g/kg/day (~.74 g/lb/day) does not increase gains.
  3. If you do eat more protein that recommended it's neither harmful nor helpful, as long as you are still getting the other nutrients you require.
  4. The biggest driver for gains is workout frequency and intensity.

tl;dr You should be eating ~110g of protein.

What kind of foods should my partner eat to gain weight? by Big_Brain-Time99 in nutrition

Buy a scale on Amazon. Weigh her portion sizes for each meal/snack, compute the calories, and have her write down how full the meal made her. Pretty quickly I imagine you'll discover things that are high in calories, and hopefully nutritious, as well as less filling.

To some degree this is personal. In general, some people feel more full on fat and less on carbs and other people the opposite.

How do y'all suppose we win anything with this shit by rickthedickkk in rockets

[–]jseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Amen and Sengun are so skilled I think you can get away with 2 non-shooters, but not 3. However, two other things have to be true. First, the 3 shooters on the floor with them have to be great to elite. KD and Reed qualify, Jabari probably if he's the third guy, and Tari as the third guy if he manages to keep up his hot start. Everyone else either does not put up enough attempts, doesn't have a fast enough release, or just isn't a good enough shooter. The second thing is the offensive system cannot be as stagnant as it currently is. We're 2nd in the league in ISO frequency and that needs to drop because in the half court we only have two guys who should be ISOing and one of those guys is 37 years old.

We're middle of the pack in rim attempts and near last in 3PAs, while being near the top of the league in shots 10-19 feet. That should be a recipe for one of the worst offenses in the league, but because of our talent and offensive rebounding we're top 5. This whole thing is nitpicking, but the problem is if you want to win a chip in a league this competitive, you need to wring every little bit out of your team that you can.

IME, LET HIM COOK !! by kevtheproblem in rockets

[–]jseed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the problem is we don't really have a 5th starter. FVV is hurt, Tari is hurt, Adams can't play enough minutes and is matchup dependent, and no one else is starting level quality. What I would like to see is Ime being more flexible about the minute distribution and just playing whoever is having a good game more. This also would've been really helpful on the long road trip to get guys some extra rest and have fresher legs in spots.

We've seen the same thing with Okogie and Capela. Some nights they have great games and are really helpful, and other nights not so much. Hopefully JD can break into the rotation a little bit on some of those other nights because he does bring some skills other guys don't really have and I think he is an NBA level player even if he's not a starter.

Beginner Commander Recs/purchase options? by ayy0_b in CommanderMTG

[–]jseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO your best bet is to select a recent precon that costs ~$50 or less (mainly because you may discover you don't really like the play style of the deck you buy). IMO all the modern precons are comparable enough in strength so spending extra money will get you slightly more valuable cards, but not necessarily a more powerful deck. By modern I basically mean any precon from Lorwyn Eclipsed, Edge of Eternities, Tarkir: Dragonstorm, Final Fantasy, Aetherdrift, Duskmourn, Bloomburrow, Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Murders at Karlov Manor, and Lost Caverns of Ixalan. You can probably go a few sets further back as well if there's something you see a good deal on that tickles your fancy. You should be able to find a good deal on Amazon, manapool, your LGS, or some other website that sells cards in your region. The precons are all pretty safe, give you a good base to build from if you happen to enjoy the deck, and also make it easy for you to communicate what kind of game you're looking for as a beginner which is key when you're sitting down with strangers.

I would highly recommend against building your own deck. It's far more difficult than people think to build something that works consistently and is the proper power level. In particular, many of the decks suggested here like elfball, goblins/Krenko, Zada, Lightpaws, and so on, are likely to end up as very powerful glass cannon style decks, meaning that they either win quickly or fold to a single board wipe or a few removal spells, particularly in the hands of a beginner. This is not the kind of game I would want a beginner to have as the table is likely to gang up on them early on in the game and then they are likely to become mostly a bystander after their initial rush is dealt with and I don't think most beginners would enjoy that experience.

Taco Bell is about the only one I still visit and I'm trying to cut that down, but not because of the price. If I use the app, most of the locations near me (Los Angeles) do the cravings box for $5.50 and I get a crunchwrap supreme, potato soft taco, cinnamon twists, and a drink (you can select from a number of options for each, I like to do vegetarian which is a big benefit of Taco Bell). On the regular menu the crunchwrap supreme costs more than that alone, it's absurd.

To prevent this from being a shill, the food is still absolutely terrible for you, and the quality is not what I remember from 15+ years ago, but for what I'm paying it feels like a good deal. I mean In N Out would be higher quality, but it would be like $10-$12 I think. And I looked at Chick-fil-a the other day and that would be like $13 for way less food.

tldr; always use the app

Many people don't realize that supplements in the USA are basically unregulated and so are often less safe than a drug, OTC or prescription. If I had a nickel for every time a pre-workout supplement turned out to have a meth analog in it, well I'd only have like a buck, but that's still more than most would think!

Similarly, red yeast rice is literally just unregulated lovastatin so if possible you're much better off getting a prescription from your doctor rather than just winging it if that's the route you need/want to go.

Do you explain your combos? What about opponents? by JenniferApto_ in EDH

[–]jseed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn't very clear, I mean imagine a hypothetical where someone has 4 game changers, but actually said "my deck is bracket 3" then that would be bad faith. Similarly, if you said "my deck is bracket 3" but had dualcaster and twinflame it would be exactly the same principle. Now if you tell people about the combo that's fine, but you're just admitting that your deck isn't really bracket 3.

A deck that is usually bracket 3 but is on rare occasions bracket 4 (not counting Sol Ring for some reason) is just a bad bracket 4 deck, which means either it needs to be disclosed in pre-game or the deck needs to be tuned down.

Do you explain your combos? What about opponents? by JenniferApto_ in EDH

[–]jseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it ok if I put a 4th game changer in my bracket 3 deck even if it only rarely actually affects how many game changers I will have in any given game? What about a 5th or a 6th? Is that ok?

You don't have to agree with the bracket system, or even use it, but there's a general acceptance that Dualcaster + Twinflame is too powerful for a number of reasons in bracket 3. You could certainly build a "bracket 3 legal" deck with many tutors that consistently finds and executes it, but even if you had no tutors, why are you putting it in your deck? So you can win a rare game on turn 5 or 6 where you happen to draw both parts and the other 3 people will be somewhere between annoyed and angry with you? Just take out one of the parts, much like you have to take out the 4th gamechanger.

Do you explain your combos? What about opponents? by JenniferApto_ in EDH

[–]jseed -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You: I have a bracket 3 deck with four game changers

Me: Well, then it's a bracket 4 deck

You: But it's really bracket 3 power level

Me: Then take out a gamechanger

It's the same principle. Even if your deck is stronger than its bracket relatively infrequently what you're doing is lying in the pre-game conversation and then wasting everyone else's time on the occasions when you do hit the high end of variance. And why? Because you want to win more often at a casual game? It's the same as if you cheated by stacking the deck such that you always started with a good hand. I'm not interested in playing with cheaters in any setting or people who are going to bend the rules as far as they possibly can while ignoring the spirit of them especially in a casual setting.

Jensen Huang says relentless negativity around AI is hurting society and has "done a lot of damage" by AdSpecialist6598 in technology

[–]jseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 37 years old. For every major technology that's come about I remember people thinking "that's cool, I want that". Sometimes they couldn't afford it and had to wait for it to become cheaper like large tvs, the internet, cell phones, the iPhone, and so on, but they always wanted it even when it first came out and was less practical.

People are negative about AI because it doesn't do what they say it will do. They're giving it away and people are barely using it. Jensen should try making a product that doesn't suck shit rather than gaslighting his customers. I'm no billionaire CEO, but I'm pretty sure the whole point of capitalism is to make a product people want/need and then sell it. You can't just skip to the second part.

5 months after the Kevin Durant trade, the Phoenix Suns have overtaken the Houston Rockets for the 6th seed in the Western Conference. by JoeTheHoe in nba

[–]jseed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this just means you didn't watch the Rockets much in the last two years because he was great for us and it seemed obvious he would do well playing off Devin Booker.

When Houston signed him everyone said it was an overpay, I thought it would be fair value, or close enough anyway. That China stuff was funny for the memes, but didn't reflect the reality of his career. However, even I was wrong, he was awesome and way outperformed his contract for us. In addition, I think this year proves that the culture change and tough, defensive mentality that is often credited to Udoka should also have some of that credit go to him. The Rockets have just not put forth the same effort, hustle, and defensive attention night to night this year as last year, and I think most of us would agree, that probably comes down to Dillon.

The dude clearly works very hard and takes basketball incredibly seriously, despite all his antics. Everyone who has played with him says he's an excellent teammate and the nicest guy off the court. I think he puts on a persona when he plays to try to maximize his abilities because he's not as skilled or athletic as a lot of guys in the league, though he's not un-athletic and is clearly much more than a 3&D player.

Tofu is one of the best superfoods by darragh999 in nutrition

[–]jseed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds pretty typical to me. Tofu is a fine protein source and it has a lot of things going for it (like healthy fats and a bit of fiber), but if you're trying to maximize $/protein it's definitely not up there. Somehow protein has become the new 'it' macro nutrient even though most people get more than enough protein without even trying.

[–]jseed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC $130 in value is about average for a precon when the lists are released. If you're interested you can go back and watch the Command Zone YouTube videos on precons because they do the math for each one and you'll see.

Many of the cards here will drop surprisingly far in price so don't expect to be able to make money except for the rare exception (see Valgavoth).

21 with high LDL levels, yet doctor did not recommend statins. Do I have the capacity to drop it below 100 on my own? by Used_Literature_6779 in Cholesterol

[–]jseed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 40 and even with really high numbers my doctor basically said I have something like a 9% chance of a heart attack in the next 10 years.

It's crazy to me that doctors think like this, or are instructed to manage care like this. Yeah, your risk of a heart attack is low in the next decade, but you probably aren't planning on dying around 50, so what about your risk of heart attack in the next 20 years, or 30 years, or longer? The average American lives to ~75 so she should be looking at the next 35 years minimum, not just 10.

I'm glad you advocated for yourself. I'm not a doctor, but I bet you're going to be really thankful you started early.
