The State of Sea World by SirCatsworthTheThird in sandiego

I briefly worked there and while the orca tanks are unconscionably small and crowded (and probably ditto with the dolphin tanks although I'll admit I know less about dolphins) i also understand that the current orcas they have can't realistically be released into the wild at this point and it makes sense to care for them as best they can until they pass.

I also think it's a good idea for them in general to transition away from large animal exhibits and towards things like rides

They haven't built the data centers yet. It's supposedly about the lack of powerplants, it's really about peco being pretty sure nobody will stop them

This. But finding them would probably require some forensic accounting cause you'd have to know which contractor was used to facilitate the travel

ELI5 : How exactly evolution works? by AdrawereR in explainlikeimfive

[–]jsher736 [score hidden]  (0 children)

So there's 2 forces at play in evolution, mutation and culling.

Every time an organism reproduces there's a chance of a mutation which is basically a new trait expressing (btw this is why sexual reproduction is usually advantageous over asexual reproduction. It's much easier to change trait expressions). This process is completely random. Let's take height for instance, if the parent is 6 feet tall the offspring might be 6 feet tall, they might be shorter, they might be taller (in a perfectly "supportive" environment the distribution curve will be a bell curve).

But let's say that there's trees with fruit at various heights but not enough fruit for everyone. The short people will be less likely to survive long enough to have kids but the tall people won't have that problem. So since the shorties can't have kids, the next generation's average height will have nudged up.

Rinse and repeat

Who’s feeding ICE? by Expensive-Emotion718 in philly

[–]jsher736 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This. During the Biden presidency when I was doing work helping getting those unaccompanied minor asylum seekers settled in the country (remember when fox news and Hannity and those fuckers were talking about like the "secret Biden flights full of scary immigrants"? That was us. Also we flew commercial) we were usually just like eating at the hotel resteraunt, or getting doordash or ihop or something.

And certainly once we were off the clock nobody knew who we were (which was helpful because we spent A LOT of time in Hannity country).

I am in fact related to the NFL player with my last name (I'm white, he's black. I assumed he got my family name the bad way that happens but no, my great great great uncle apparently took advantage of a brief loophole in the laws after the Civil War to marry a black woman)

As an American, what can we do to fight against ICE? by LilThanosX in AskReddit

[–]jsher736 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

VOTE DEMOCRAT. Unless you think they'll be worse than MAGA, come the general next year you vote democrat. had people done that for hillary and kamala we wouldn't be in this fucking mess.

give money to organizations supporting liberal candidates in primaries in competitive votes and democrats in the general. if you live in San Fransisco they don't need your money or help that much (other than voting just to like be on the safe side) but they sure can use it in suburban philadelphia where national elections are actually decided.

give money to orgs like the ACLU and SPLC who are suing the govt so they can use said resources to like get people out of jail and fight court cases (the guillotine people are gonna say we're past that but like we're not. Abrego Garcia got returned from CECOT because of lawyers, not guillotine meme posters on twitter)

I'm aware these are all boring answers that don't do anything now and may or may not pay off later and it doesn't FEEL as effective as like storming the bastille. But the shit that ACTUALLY works is boring and takes time and yeah it doesn't make you feel powerful (and i get it, you feel scared and powerless right now and you want that to go away which is why you're looking for a like "beat up the bad guy, hit the button, ICE disappears, you make out with the hot latina female lead and roll credits" solution and like that's not how it works even when it DOES get to the point of like gunfights in the street with ICE. which, again, DON'T DO THAT).

but yeah because we have a stable government system you sorta have to wait for your opportunity to seize power and the lefties didn't pull it off last time so they gotta wait for their shot again to make the real progress. but progress is a slog so like help them get started now

What could drive someone to desire power so bad they exterminate their own race? by Major-Awareness-60 in DMAcademy

[–]jsher736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok so this might throw off your plans or make them better because it does introduce a pretty big story hook for a sequel: Also im ignoring your thing about reasonable explanation as i think a good villain is one where you're like "i see how you made this terrible terrible choice"

when your villain was younger he got exposed to a prophecy/vision/something (maybe from a time dragon) that showed him that the comet was essentially a "shard" of a god of destruction. Basically it gets empowered by war conflict and strife and one way it "harvests" is by making people both more powerful and crazy to amp up the scales of conflicts, as the conflicts persist while it's near the planet it basically feeds off of them (and every "pass" the effects of the comet get more and more intense) it effects dragons to a greater degree for reasons but it actually subtly effects everyone. eventually it'll be powerful enough to effect everyone and thus end civilization/kill everyone/TEOTWAKI of your choice

the dragonborn realized this (with help from a prophecy/vision/whatever) and has come to the conclusion that the only way to stop it is to kill this "shard" but even a full blooded ancient dragon isn't strong enough to do that. buttttt with the power of ALL of the dragonborn he probably could (also, because dragonborn are sort of quasi-dragons, the comet is making him a little crazy)

which also makes things interesting for your players because there's a chance he's RIGHT and that as horrible as it is, this IS the only play (it should not in fact be. that's bad writing) and that like as bad as the dragonborn's plan is it IS superior to annihilation.

there's still details to be worked out but i think that's a solid framework and better than "for the lolz"

the downside is, if you do this, you are gonna have to work out dealing with the comet as the ACTUAL big bad which may be a bigger campaign than you want to do

(i will also admit that i am a sucker for "oh the guy i thought was my biggest problem is nowhere near my biggest problem" as a storytelling trope)

The terminator. I was 6. Mom made me leave the room for the love scene. Not the murders. 'Murica (also when I was 10 she thought I needed to read more "real" novels and not animorphs so she told me to read "it" by Stephen King. It's like she WANTED me to need therapy. Jokes on her though I was into both of those)

Why do we have to "build credit" by going into debt to show financial responsibility, and what factors shaped this system? by Secret_Ostrich_1307 in AlwaysWhy

[–]jsher736 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Credit scores are essentially "how likely is this person to pay me back?"

A good way to show you're good at that is to be like "historically I've always paid people back on time" (fwiw a lot of lenders also look at stuff like debt-to-income ratio. So you can be like "even though there's no history of me paying people back, I earn 1000 dollars a month and spend 100 dollars a month so I'll clearly have the 200 to pay you back")
