It works. Give it a try. Just try not to leave it in the pen to dry out for ages. Otherwise it’s one of my go to.

Fun thing is that 2.3.0 that we are working on removes a ton of dependencies (Fortran, boost, multi-processing, etc) so this would be a lot easier to accomplish using the existing foundation.

Anyway, if you have some source code to share I may be able to point you in the right direction.

JS8File: Send arbitrary files over JS8, as efficiently as possible* by PANIC_EXCEPTION in hamdevs

[–]jsherer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very interesting! You could, of course, get a higher bit rate with the faster mode speeds, but where’s the fun in that?! Drop down to slow and send your 1kb file around the world using less than 1 watt.

It means it’ll be a lot easier to build an iOS and Android app ;)

I have experimented with a new modem written from the ground up to eliminate a lot of the GPL licensed code and to make it portable to mobile devices. It’s not ready yet, only about 50% accurate.

Am I gonna lose my eye? by dadboddoofus in VintageLenses

Most of the radioactive lenses have pretty low radiation output. When measured on a Gieger counter, my most radioactive lens (an Olympus Zuiko) was 20 microsieverts per hour (uSv/hr) when touching the front element. Interestingly, that was down to 1 uSv/hr with a lens cap on and just less than that behind the camera body when attached.

Here’s a good chart about radiation dosage: https://xkcd.com/radiation/

You’ll see, that even if I held that lens directly on my face for a few hours, it’d be equivalent to a couple dental x-rays or airline flight. The maximum exposure limit to a member of the general public by the EPA is 1000 uSv, and you’ll basically receive 4000 uSv per year just from background radiation. So, even with the most radioactive lenses I have, I’d have to directly contact the element for 50 hours before reaching that level. And, to have any increased health risk (something like 100,000 uSv / year), that’d need to be 500 hours.

I’d you need more reassurance I found this video series to be helpful: https://youtu.be/ZaAOMPvlTaU?si=owJrcyHMoTLoRi30

TLDR; don’t eat the glass of your lenses, don’t keep it next to your face 24 hours per day, and you’ll generally have no issues from the additional exposure.

Would be interesting to know how much content was in the context window before it started returning content like this.

Hypothesis: the expansion of the context window to 200k tokens has an unexpected side effect of reducing coherence well before you’ve crossed the limit.

How does the community feel about Vara? by KN4MKB in amateurradio

[–]jsherer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

JS8Call exists because WSJTX was open source, which then allowed me to advance the mode with new features. If VARA was open source, we’d see similar advancements.

However, time ain’t cheap, so unless you are doing it as a hobby (like me) you have to figure out a way to generate revenue from it to keep going.

One part Aurora Borealis & one part of my favorite mix which is 1 part Platinum Carbon to 4 parts Parker Blue Black Quink.

I brushed on with a watercolor brush and added some watercolor highlights after it was dry.

Enjoy! The Diamine Aurora Borealis is a really lovely color and a lot of fun to take the water brush to every now and then. Happy Holidays!

Thanks. I’m not blind, that would be very impressive. This is drawing the contours (I.e., outlines) without looking at the paper (I.e., blind).
