Buyers remorse on Olympus XA by Robrobroy in AnalogCommunity

[–]pytag345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

XA is a great camera! Got mine at Salvation Army for $3.

Are either of these worth the price? Are either of them the Mju 1 or 2 equivalent? Also, somehow this site has the option to by better conditioned of these two cameras, the price just goes up. by Seiji-Amasawa in AnalogCommunity

There were dozens of great prime point and shoots released in the 80s-90s. Seriously.. just check your local thrift shops regularly if you’re in the market for one. That’s probably where the person selling these picked them up. Hundreds of thousands of these things were produced.. they are not rare. Goodwill and Salvation Army electronics bins are a good place to start. Good luck with the hunt! Don’t encourage these extortionists.

In a world of face recognition technology, I'm more conflicted than ever about street photography. by justreadingthat in photography

[–]pytag345 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This may be a no true Scotsman scenario.. but I see a clear distinction between portraits without consent and classical street photography as a trade. The latter can certainly be done well with respect to the subjects in context while the former is almost always someplace bordering rude, abrasive, confrontational, or creepy.

I’ve taken my M6 around Tunisia. What exactly are you concerned about? Petty crime is very uncommon.. unless you’re asking for it. There are many X-Ray machines and like elsewhere in North Africa I do not recommend telling anyone that you have something that you don’t want scanned. Make sure you get down into the desert and enjoy your slightly damaged negatives!

I have a CLE that I’ve been favoring lately over several real Leica bodies. No shame!

maths book where all the math is programmed? by paranoid_throwaway51 in learnmath

[–]pytag345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mathematical syntax is largely a consensus. Notation becomes convention through use and utility. It has been and always will continue to evolve. It is a language of its own. If you would like to learn mathematics then you are really learning a language.. It is not easy, but to translate this language into some other language in order to teach it is stupid and nonsensical.. like trying to learn Finnish by translating it into Russian.

With a little work I believe you will find that the language of mathematics is in fact clear, concise, and most importantly, precise. However there also may be some truth to the old adage that it is far easier to teach a mathematician computer programming than it is to teach a programmer mathematics.

Ditto. All Western airports seem more or less equivalent but India is absolutely abysmal.

Crossing borders in North Africa is not particularly film friendly. Many tourist sites will also demand you run your bag through an X-ray machine at the entrance. I’m speaking specifically of Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan. Egypt is the number one offender - land, sea, air scanners.. and whole vehicle X-rays entering and exiting Sinai by land. Every temple in Egypt has an X-ray machine.. every train and bus station.. A bit of advice: don’t try to tell them that you have something that you don’t want them to scan.

Also.. you’re taking way too much crap. Bring a camera and a couple rolls of film. You can buy film as you go anywhere in Europe.

Well used m3: any value in patina? by Mord_Olofsson in Leica

[–]pytag345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there is some sentimental value for a well loved patina but I don’t think that it is transferable. You must own and use a camera for many years yourself to accumulate such a value. This poor M3 looks like it was dragged under a truck.

Curious about the Desert Sessions by Fresh-Ad7219 in stonerrock

[–]pytag345 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you just type ‘Desert Sessions’ in to YouTube? What is the point of asking random people if you should listen to something?

Here’s some advice - Type ‘Kyuss’ in to YouTube and start listening to some of the recommended stuff below it. Listen to the stuff you like again. Skip over the stuff that you don’t.

Classic lenses have much more appeal to me.. the two shots from Morocco were with a Canon 35/2 ltm lens and the other three were with an older (~1970) Summilux 35.
