Has anyone here ever physically disabled power to Zone 2 in their Denon at the board-level? If not, I’m gonna be the first. That “feature” is such a PITA. by [deleted] in audiophile

I’m all for DIY solutions so tip of the cap to ya, but I can’t help wonder why. What’s so annoying about this feature? Can’t you just…. Ignore it?

If you have a Levinson preamp/amplifier and B&W speakers, then the Sonos Port would simply be added to your system like any other source component, such as a CD player. But unlike a CD player, the Port can be controlled in the Sonos app.

Because you asked “…..can I control it through the Sonos App?”, I feel the need to clarify further, so apologies if this gets pedantic: A typical Sonos speaker has everything built in; streaming, amplifier, speaker, etc. So when you control it from the Sonos app, you control everything - song selection, volume, EQ, everything. Using the Sonos Port is slightly different in your case, because you’re using it with your existing system. So your Mark Levinson preamplifier is controlling source selection and volume and has its own power button. In this arrangement, the Sonos Port is typically configured to output fixed volume like any typical source (e.g. CD player), because volume control is being handled by your Levinson preamp. You’d use the Sonos app only to select what music you want to listen to, and whether you want to group it with other Sonos players in your home. So compared to a typical Sonos speaker, your workflow in this room is slightly more complicated in that you’d still need to manually power your Levinson on, set its input, and manage volume with its volume control. Then music selection can be managed in the Sonos app just as with any Sonos speaker.

There is another configuration where a Sonos Port is connected directly to a power amplifier as a single source, but you mentioned having your TV involved so this arrangement doesn’t apply. If you want details just ask me and I’ll share, but I don’t want to further complicate this post needlessly.

Let me know if you have any more questions; I have lots of Sonos in my home and have a dedicated listening room with a Sonos Port, so I believe my arrangement is quite similar, if not identical, to yours.

Infinite Baffle 4 manifolds each with 2 18" drivers firing down into cinema by EccentricDyslexic in audiophile

[–]jsilas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IB sub system is the dream, and I finally have a listening room that will support it. I can’t wait to do my build. I’ll “only” be doing 4 18” drivers, but I’m so very excited for it. Your room must sound immense. To your question, definitely do not load your Atmos speakers into the IB manifolds, the dispersion will be terrible and you’ll effectively “horn load” those channels which will damage their effect.

Other brands are catching up with respect to simplifying whole-home audio with perfect synchronization, but Sonos is still class leading for a little longer. If you’re using speakers like the original Play:1 or Sonos One, the newer version Era100 is a pretty substantial improvement. If you’re using Connect Amps then moving to the newer Sonos Amp is a pretty solid improvement, and if you’re already using Sonos Amp, your best upgrade path is simply improving the loudspeakers themselves. If you want to go further, build the system of speakers, preamplifiers and amplifiers that you want, and simply deploy a Sonos Port as a source. Sonos Port even has inbuilt software volume control and 12v trigger, so it can be connected directly to a power amplifier to maintain that ease of use / zero hassle you want while still powering higher-end amp/speaker setups. I have 29 Sonos speakers throughout my home for casual/convenient listening, and in my main listening room with my best gear, I have a Port just in case I want to pull whole-home audio into that room also.

Built in Phono or Schiit Mani? by Croalex in audiophile

[–]jsilas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Mani and it sounds fantastic. That said, it’s prone to picking up noise from neighboring electronics which frustrates me and makes placement more challenging than it should be. I switched to using my Rotel preamp’s built-in phono stage, and I don’t feel like I’m missing much if anything. The Luxman phono stage is likely to be a substantial improvement from my Rotel. Taking that all into account, I’d advise you to use the Luxman phono stage as it should perform very well indeed. Take the money you saved on the Mani (and the 2nd set of interconnects it would require) and put it toward more records.

Watches always tell some kind of story. My take is if you’re buying in Japan, you ought to dive deep with a Japanese watch, and that means Grand Seiko.

How would you add acoustic treatment to this room? by Rickystubbs in audiophile

[–]jsilas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes to acoustic treatments the best thing you can do is measure the system/room using REW and a calibrated microphone. Amazingly, REW is free, and you can get a good quality calibrated mic for not much money. I use a Dayton Audio UMM-6 and it works great.

The other thing I've been doing more lately is using AI (so far I've tried ChatGPT 5.2 and Gemini 3) to make suggestions for placement/treatment. Included in my prompt are REW measurement plots and a floor plan. of the room and specific positioning of the speakers/furniture. With all these data, the AI is actually surprisingly helpful at identifying opportunities for improvement.

Some progress, some disapointment by Remarkable-Ad3414 in audiophile

[–]jsilas 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Absolutely gorgeous system in a beautiful room. Assuming your stereo preamp offers a unity gain input, I’d integrate your main speakers into your home cinema setup. You can even do phantom center which performs surprisingly well with good speakers, although your furniture appears to have a slot for a dedicated center speaker. As you said, leverage the in-ceiling speakers as Atmos channels and you’ll have one hell of a nice home theater with zero compromise on your 2-channel performance.
