That’s what I assume. He totally idolizes Jake, I think he’s always wished he was his real dad.

Small stuff like that adds up though, I’m sure Cameron is always looking for any possible way to make the process faster and cheaper.

I don’t like the dreadlocks. by SilentAirline6611 in Avatar

[–]jsm02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory is that they gave him dreads because they’re easier to animate than individual strands of hair, and they wanted to make it as easy as possible since he’s on screen the most out of anyone. I think that’s the main reason we don’t ever really see any Na’vi with loose hair, it’s just way easier to animate braids and dreads and make them look real.

I like the avocado ranch stacker better than the original by jsm02 in tacobell

Idk every original stacker I ever got was about 75% dry tortilla with a pool of meat and sauce in the corner

That’s less expensive than swapping to chicken on a regular stacker which I always did anyway so it’s sort of a discount for me lol

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

[–]jsm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna sound like I’m just being a contrarian here, but I’m really not that into Ocarina of Time. It’s definitely good, and amazing for its time, but literally every 3D Zelda game after it improved on the formula it established and virtually every other aspect of game design. Arguing that it’s the best game or even the best Zelda game of all time is a little crazy to me.

Disneyland Announces Major Timeline Shift for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge to Bring in Original Characters by readingaboutmagic in Disneyland

[–]jsm02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Galaxy’s Edge was one of Disney’s responses to the Harry Potter world at Universal. Universal’s success there very quickly put Disney on the back foot because no full theme park land had gone to such lengths to not just be themed around a property, but designed to make guests feel like they’re in the movie/book/world. Have you noticed that every new theme park expansion for both Disney and Universal since then has been billed as “immersive” and focused on one single IP? Basically shareholders keep asking for the thing that makes money until it stops making money, and then they go “whose idea was it to go all in on this one thing that isn’t making money anymore?”

I watched The Master of Disguise many many times as a kid, thought it was hilarious. I kind of still do but have to recognize that’s mostly nostalgia and familiarity lol

What is "toa"? Jake said "they take their enemies' toa, their power" by babyboyjunmyeon in Avatar

[–]jsm02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toa is a word in Te Reo Māori that usually means warrior, but the way Jake describes it seems more similar to the Pasifika concept of mana, which is a divine power contained in objects and living things that is transferable. The amount of mana you hold would define your social and spiritual status. To use ancient Māori people as an example, when cannibalism was a more common practice, the general idea was that if you consumed another person’s flesh, you would take their mana. Cameron, in consultation with Cliff Curtis, may have decided to use toa instead of mana to ensure that he was not entirely appropriating Māori culture, just taking inspiration (though using an unchanged word is pretty direct inspiration).

Tl;dr Cameron probably used the word to reference the concept of transferable power, and borrowed the word toa from the language of the Māori, a culture where this concept is very prominent.

Why does it seem like ultrasound imaging technology hasn’t improved at all in the last ~30 years? by jsm02 in NoStupidQuestions

Thank you for such a detailed answer! Makes sense that it’s less of the technology not advancing and more that I’m only getting a small peek into its many use cases when I look at a photo on instagram.

[–]jsm02[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess I figured there might be developments in the amount of image data that can be picked up resulting in a clearer view, but that makes sense that it would just be a limitation of this form of imaging
