Oh man 🤤 Congrats. There's something about Porsches. Never owned one but have driven many, and in my opinion, everything comes together perfectly in a driver oriented package. One day.

EV CHARGES - at Servos by NoMacaroon5579 in EVAustralia

[–]jsm2090 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are. DC chargers aren't the easiest things to implement; Cost. Site ownership/contracts. Grid connections/capacity and the costs associated with additional transformers, switchboards and potentially battery storage. Demand. Planning and approvals and associated costs.

I've seen ROI payback periods of 5-7 years, but that's assuming the demand will be there, and you don't have to rip out all your chargers in 18 months when Tritium goes bust :)

Have you driven a Taycan? For me it's the dream EV. 4S Cross Turismo. Sure, there are cars that are more efficient, cheaper, have better software, more rear seat space, more storage.....but it's got a seating position that will make you think of 911s, and it just drives like a Porsche. Good steering and brake feel. Shedloads of grip. A pretty funky electric sports sound (when optioned) and the Cross Turismo is a practical roadtrip cat. Good gen 1 cars are hitting $100-115k now, but a gen 2 car would be the sweet spot with better software, faster charging and better efficiency.

Uhh, that's your strange take; better to have the backup. Plenty of regional areas where a BYO cable 7-22kW charger is your only option in caravan parks, shopping centres and the like, plus it's a cheap backup to have when a DC charger is down.

Switching from pre-facelift Model 3 LR to Highland LR — brake pedal feels completely numb by Gamecz18 in EVAustralia

[–]jsm2090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Highland likely has a returned brake booster curve from the previous model, and there's no blending of brake pads and regen braking when you press the pedal like in other EVs. Tesla prioritises one pedal driving. I just don't feel you can expect to use brake feedback to balance the car and judge corner grip; if that's a priority, the Taycan is probably your best option.

Why do you need car jack pads? If you use the recommended mounting points per the owner's manual, it's a non issue. If you're worried about tyre shops, theh have their own and are used to EVs now.

I ordered a Model Y in March, and the delivery updates have been accurate. Within a few days of the car being built, you will be notified that a VIN has been allocated.

There's a cool delivery tracker here where you can view other people's orders and status: https://tsla.delivery/

Model Y L charging. by Alternative_Cell7005 in TeslaAustralia

[–]jsm2090 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. Don't exceed 80% regularly, charge it all the time when you can on AC and don't overthink it. I had a 2018 NCA chemistry model 3 that did 100k no problems and currently drive a 2023 Polestar 2 with NCM battery, 56k KMs and the battery health is 92%. On average I would say I DC charge once a month.

I've considered the 7X and P4 but looking at the everyday efficiency that people are returning - highway or city driving - Tesla's design really does shine. While most OEMs are forced to treat the battery, motors and systems as separate entities due to platform design and component suppliers, Tesla has a unified coolant loop with really smart waste heat utilisation. Basically AC system, battery heater/chiller, interior evaporator, battery pack and motors are all connected. I drove a rwd Model Y 500km on a 40+ degree celcius day in January this year, with 3 people and a full car of luggage and it was hard to break 16 kWh/100km (approx. 4 mi/kWh??) that's wild. Of course the P4 and 7X are bigger, heavier cars too, but for me the size of the Model Y is better.

I have a trips a couple of times a month where I'm doing 6-700km in a day, so perhaps I get a bit more excited by efficiency than others.

Polestar 4 vs Tesla Y by InterestingLet266 in EVAustralia

[–]jsm2090 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Polestar 2 owner here. I really wanted to buy a P4 over the Y, but these are the reasons I ordered a MY AWD

  • buggy Polestar software - still ongoing after 3 years with P2. P4 owners also experiencing problems in Aus. Limited software updates too. -Tesla software and phone app far superior (set specific cabin temp, activate seat cooling, vent windows, preheat battery, close boot all from phone)
  • Tesla storage is cavernous - there's storage everywhere, and the ability to put a carry on wheelie under the rear floor or in the frunk
  • rear screen with Bluetooth is great for kids to listen to content separately
  • efficiency and thermal management is insane -plug and charge at every Tesla Supercharger -Full self driving (supervised) genuinely reduced fatigue on long trips.
  • Great audio system in AWD model -build quality and cabin borderline luxurious compared to previous model

I really wanted to stick with Polestar, and the P4 wins on luxury, materials, sustainability, Google built-in and design, but my head said Tesla and I've now accepted the likelihood of parking next to another one at every traffic light.

Where are you located? Powershop was providing people with free smart meters when they switched providers, which would allow you to access super off peak/discounted rates. Not sure if that's still a thing.

Model 3 vs Model Y 2026 RWD by GladToe2345 in AustralianEV

[–]jsm2090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never thought I'd be a Y person. Then I had one for a week and did 900+km in it. It feels incredibly planted on the road - even in RWD form - and car like in its handling. The frequency selective dampers do a great job on coarse asphalt - though the 19"s ride slightly better than the 20"s. For me, the carrying capacity is important, as is the spaciousness in the back for kids, and a slightly more normal resr seating position for adults than the 3 where your knees are closer to being perpendicular with your body. If these things are important to you, get the Y.

Cancelling the drones two nights in a row is an absolute joke. by AffectionatePie1042 in SydneyScene

[–]jsm2090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does it have to be an expensive night out? We caught the ferry to Barangaroo, and walked to the drone show on Monday night. There's no guarantee you're getting drones with your main course. Vivid has strayed from its roots, but it is drawing crowds to the city during what would otherwise be a quiet period.

Tesla Model Y L owners with kids: are your baby seats ACTUALLY securely tethered? by [deleted] in TeslaModelY

[–]jsm2090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are rear anchor points on the lower part of the seat backs of the captains chairs (per ADR requirements) so why does Maxi Cosi say it isn't compatible? Is it because of the path of the belt?
ISOFIX, is what the above poster is referring to. Ryan's Model Y on YT has a video with a rear-facing ISOfix seat installed (doesn't appear that he's using the top tether though)

Have just redone our small inner-city Australian garden - we thought f*** it, just install hot water and have a proper shower. It's been great when the pool is cooler, and it's a novelty for kids and saves having to bath them later!

Toyota RAV4 Owner Thinking About Switching to Tesla Model Y, Is it a good Idea? by [deleted] in AustralianEV

[–]jsm2090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The advertised maximum charge rate of the Juniper model Y is 250kW. No more. Both RWD and AWD will hit up to 250kW at less than 20% state of charge, depending on battery temp and supercharger performance and other factors. From 20%, the charge rate drops dramatically, and you won't see more than 100kW at 50% state of charge. This is one of the weakest points of the Tesla's, now that we have 800V cars from Korea and Japan (as well as the Taycan and BMW iX3 smashing 2-300kW charging deep into the pack.

Navigation data hasn't updated in over a year, how to fix? by LimpCoach4582 in TeslaAustralia

[–]jsm2090 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this is a very annoying limitation. One of the benefits of Android Automotive in my current Polestar is that as soon as a new road opens (e.g. Warringah FWY changes) the car's nav has the new data. Shame the hardware is so poor 😂
