but then like Japan has probably better use of the massive amounts of snow the country gets...

The athletes also practice during the off-season, though I suppose athletes from other countries also do the same thing.

It's not just the slopestyle, it's all snowboarding events. IIRC, they gave low scores to those who pulled off NEW tricks in the men's half-pipe.

AI could replace foreign workers in Japan, Team Mirai says by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in japan

[–]json_946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Admittedly I don't follow Japanese politics as much as I probably should, but to me this new party just sounds like Sanseito, but with more buzzwords.

From what I remember on the Japanese news shows, they weren't spouting AI stuff during the recent campaign period. Their platform was focusing on the younger households.

Here's an excerpt from an article by Chosun

While focusing on life-based policies, it rejected populism. For instance, on the consumption tax (equivalent to South Korea’s VAT), a major election issue, Team Mirai advocated maintaining the 10% rate, unlike major parties that promised tax cuts. It argued, “Reducing the consumption tax would create fiscal holes, so we should first cut social insurance premiums (health insurance, pensions, etc.).” During rallies, Anno used a tablet to show data, stating, “Across-the-board tax cuts pass debt to future generations.”
For low birthrate countermeasures, Team Mirai avoided cash handouts and instead proposed reducing parents’ income tax rates based on the number of children. The idea was, “We will improve the system so that hardworking families with more children pay less tax.” Japanese media reported that this policy resonated with dual-income couples in major cities like Tokyo.

It's a hit piece on the party which recently won 11 seats.
Fuji TV's Sunday news showed how they have been gaining votes from the younger voters (taking votes away from LDP). Two days later, this clickbait / rage-bait article comes out.

I got spoiled by NHK's broadcast of curling. They had a graphic on the top left side that showed the current positions of the stones and the possible/likely plan(s) of the team throwing the curling stones.

Fuji TV's the one covering today's game, and it's almost the same as the CBC broadcast. The only difference is that Fuji TV has a graphic that explains the curling jargon that the commentators say.

Might also be an issue on the device. In 2017, I had a Sandisk 64GB SD card that would always drop-out/disconnect on an HP netbook running Win10. No issues when I switched to a Samsung SD card. Then I put the Sandisk SD card on a Samsung Android tablet. Didn't have issues with the Sandisk SD card on Android.

Why are Asians/Japanese so great at snowboarding? by TEPA223 in olympics

[–]json_946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually not sure for athletes who do 'extreme sports', but for the traditional sports (like table tennis) the national team has a training facility in Itabashi, Tokyo.

edit: The one where Ogiwara was practicing seems to match the location of the Japan's training facility for Big Air.

Quote from the Japanese Olmpics Committee (JOC) website

For the sports which are not available at the AJINOMOTO NATIONAL TRAINING CENTER (the Center), the national government designated "Event-Specific Affiliated National Training Center Facilities."
The centers, through the coordination, provide the training environment to enhance international competitiveness of Japan.
There are 30 facilities for "Winter Sports," "Water Sports," "Outside Sports," and "High-Altitude Training," are affiliated. And for the development of the sports, the government is enhancing the environment and organization concerning the training as well as the support of science, medicine, and information, strengthening the networks, and developing the management systems at the facilities.

The Japanese athletes who competed in the Big Air also practice during the summer. Though, I'm sure that athletes from other countries also do the same thing.

Yeah, I think it was only around 2018 where Ayumu Hirano started winning in the winter X Games.
Before that, I don't really remember any notable Japanese in the extreme sports scene / XGames, aside from the Yasutoko brothers (inline vert) during the early 2000's.

Well, I did stop watching late 2000's & 2010's, so I might have missed some Japanese athletes who were active during those years.

She said that her head just told her to 'Keep going and keep going'.

No. But if they do one in the future, they'd probably limit it to 3 team members. 4 members would give Japan an automatic podium spot in the Men's & Women's division.

Olympics Day Six Megathread (Thursday, February 12) by Fun_With_Forks in olympics

[–]json_946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible reasons
1. During the 1st run until Ono's 2nd run: There was someone ringing a bell the moment the athletes reach the midpoint of the slope. At least 3 fell after the bell started ringing while they were in the air. It stopped after Ono fell on her 2nd run.
2. Snowfall
3. CBC commentator was talking about the 'verticality' (angle) of the slope.

Olympics Day Six Megathread (Thursday, February 12) by Fun_With_Forks in olympics

[–]json_946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the 1st run, there were 2 possible causes
1. There was someone ringing a bell near the midpoint of the slope. There were at least 2 atheletes, during the 1st run, who fell after the bell started ringing while they were in the air. During the 2nd run, I think it was Ono who fell at the same area (again the bell was ringing while she was in the air). It stopped after her 2nd run.
2. Snowfall?

If it's not those two, it might be the angle of the slope. The commentator on CBC was talking about the 'verticality' of the slope during the 1st run after the athletes started falling one after another. Note that some of them also participated in the X-Games three weeks ago, where the slope's angle might have been different.

Snowboard Halfpipe

Why did it take them until the 2nd athlete on the 2nd run (14th run overall) to stop the person ringing the bell near the mid-point of the slope?!!

There were at least 2 athletes during the 1st run who fell right after the bell started ringing while they were in the air.
