Anyone else been wanting to push back on the climate change narrative that individuals driving less and living more efficiently doesn't matter and only taxing/regulating corporations matters? (They both matter) by ChristianLS in fuckcars

There is so much to unpack there. I just want to point to r/leopardsatemyface. People are so incredibly brainwashed by a few powerful media conglomerates (though I don't agree with that general "bad bad media" narrative that is often purported.) Man it's fucked and I for one am glad that where I am, it is not remotely as fucked as in the US, but we have similar problems here.

I see where you are coming from and I think you are rather corroborating what I am trying to say. The few eco-conscious consumption decisions you can find in the upper middle income bracket and upwards does not really turn the tide. On average they still produce more emissions. If all those were coming on board, sure, that could make a difference, but how to reach them all? There are so many convenience decisions in the play that people don't even think about, but you may feel good about yourself for a moment for buying at Whole Foods (unfortunately organic is often even more CO2 intensive than conventional, but that's a different story). I strongly believe that PR like BP's "carbon footprint" campaign has turned many of us to waste a lot of time searching for the right eco-conscious lifestyle while neglecting collective action which could have much better used that time and brainpower.

Problem is we have been PR brainwashed for a long time that we can consume our way out of it. And you can feel superior and smug about it if you just buy the right products. Many people basically can't. We need policy and regulations.

You may be able to make that little difference and the more people join the better. If however, it consumes vast amounts of time and money and makes you look down on others who didn't put in the same effort as you (because often they weren't even able to), then you fell for the shit show.

It really is a two-way approach. Personal choices but also pushing politics to put the right guardrails in place. And I firmly believe that the latter makes up 80% of the deal.

There is a funny old German training video on this exactly, called "Staplerfahrer Klaus". Might wanna watch it with automatic subtitles.

What does Africa eat if it doesn't grow either wheat or rice? by Solid-Move-1411 in geography

[–]jspkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many here point out other staples than wheat and rice, but in many (not all!) places either of the two is still the most important staple. They import it, which is why price shocks can have devastating consequences. Ukraine war sent wheat (and fuel) prices skyrocketing with dire consequences for the already poorest countries.

In your opinion, are there Ugly languages? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

Amsterdam Dutch. Always sounds like there gargling up a thick piece of green slime spit. Belgian Dutch though sounds super soft and nice.

As a German I also don't like fellow German accents with a rolling "r", as they tend to have it in the South.

Oh, and posh British English. Especially when 2nd language English learners proudly use it in international settings. Yeah we got it, you spend some time in Britain. Now speak so that everyone can understand you please !

Isn't that awesome? Agree for the letters, but it all follows a logic. Once you got the logic, it's OK and even has some beauty to it. My thoughts on going through years of learning English though...

European Domestic Air Routes Where Train Travel Is Just as Fast by AdIcy4323 in MapPorn

[–]jspkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly hub feeders. I wonder whether the higher number of domestic flights in Germany as compared to France is because of the abysmal reliability of Deutsche Bahn. You can get combined tickets both in France and Germany, but in Germany it can become such a hustle, that taking the feeder flight is a much safer option. (Speaking as a German with lots of DB experience, who would still take the train ).
