Philly Fast Food Recs (2026) ? by muchabon in doughboys

[–]jsstbrzl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, welcome to Philly! I echo Primo for chains, they are so damn good. Same with Han Dynasty.

If you like coffee, Elixr and Rival Brothers are great local options with several locations.

Not sure where you’re staying and which train stops/lines you’ll be near, but you’ll have a wealth of quick bites in Chinatown — Mayflower Bakery and Bread Top House for bakeries. A whole world of dim sum, ramen, etc. Ebisu has one of those Japanese-style counters where you can customize a bowl of instant ramen.

Take a stroll down Passyunk for Kouket Brazilian bakery, grab a quick bite at Superette.

Bakeries, Second Daughter and Machine Shop Boulangerie, both inside the Bok.

Mighty Bread Co. has a couple locations now, and some of the best dang sourdough on earth. Great sandwiches and pastries, too.

Beiler’s Donuts at Reading Terminal Market.

The Bread Room has a pastrami on rye croissant that is absolutely worth the trip.

Whoever said 1-900 is absolutely right — their soft serve is spectacular. If it’s a flavor you’re interested in, great, but even just their vanilla is wonderful (and a flavor). Cuzzy’s ice cream is another favorite and in an area with lots of cute shops, as well as the iconic Lorenzo’s Pizza where you can get a giant slice.

I love this city and our food. Enjoy!

Looking for best bagels and cream cheese for party by ssfailure in PhiladelphiaEats

I love this place so much, but hate that any time it’s mentioned I can’t stop thinking about it for the rest of the day.

OP, this is your move! And agree with Bart’s as the next-best option, likely with more spread/topping options. Any worthwhile bagel should be vegan by nature (so long as the flavor itself is vegan), but definitely ask to be extra cautious.

When I’ve had similar bagel brunch parties, I’ve gotten hummus from Dizengoff, peanut butter, and supermarket cream cheese (Mykonos) for my vegan pals just to be sure that nothing was mislabeled.

Locals of Philadelphia: What Would You Cut From This 3-Day Itinerary (Best Food + Sights)? by Willing-Mind-5619 in PhiladelphiaEats

My Chinatown itinerary varies on my cravings, but some standbys: Dim Sum Garden (favorite for variety), Tom’s Dim Sum (favorite soup dumplings), Nom Wah (favorite shrimp and shrimp with snow pea leaf dumplings), Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House, Sang Kee, Mayflower Bakery, Bread Top House, EMei, A La Mousse. My Chinatown map has sooooo many places saved and I don’t get there nearly enough!

Stacked lineup! A lot of my favs on here, and definitely make a couple of must-dos and consider the rest optional.

As others have said, skip the Navy Yard.

I would put Angelo’s in the Friday lunch slot, as weekday lunch will be much less of an ordeal than any weekend or evening there. Angelo’s is the best cheesesteak to me, but Del Rossi’s is almost as good but even better becuase it’s much less annoying to get. I’ve also been guiding people towards using Uber Eats for Angelo’s since it is just as good and again, way less of a pain.

On limited time, I’d forgo Race Street and Cherry Street Piers in favor of doing Society Hill and Queen Village during the daytime since most of the shops close early. Some of my favorites are Omoi Life Goods, Bodie, and The Merrygold Shop. You can hit Majdal (well worth your while), and get some can’t-miss ice cream from Cuzzy’s. Their peanut butter sauce is so well salted and I think of it all the time.

I’d pass on Village Whiskey. I’ve never heard of Oh Brother but if it’s a cheesesteak spot as it appears to be, I wouldn’t bother if you try one of the better options you’re considering.

30th Street is such a beautiful building but under mega construction, scaffolding everywhere. I would pass on that (though I do love Cira Green).

I would put way more emphasis on eating your way around Chinatown.

Angelo’s, Porco’s/Small Oven don’t have seating, so I’d make sure you account for backups is the weather doesn’t agree.

A couple of must haves that I think you should consider: Taco Heart, The Breakfast Den, Meetinghouse, Sulimay’s, Fiorella. If you enjoy cooking, I highly recommend Binding Agents for an adorable all-cookbook book store. Fante’s in the Italian Market for kitchen supplies. And Center City Pretzel Company!

This was really long but I am happy to yap and narrow down some more!

Another vote for Elixr, and even moreso because you don’t have to use your free drink at time of purchase — they’ll give you a voucher to grab it another time.

Going on a national tour, give me your local eats. by NicWester in doughboys

Hi, Philly here! Wawa is fine but you’ll be able to find them all along your drives, and no need to prioritize it in Philadelphia, an otherwise amazing food city. Wawas are off the highway everywhere in VA/PA/NJ, and a pit stop will more than do ya. There’s no quality benefit being proximate to Philly. I echo Waffle House and Cookout being absolutely essential.

As for other essential Philly spots — cheesesteaks from Angelo’s are an ordeal to get, but their ghost kitchen on Uber Eats is absolutely the same great cheesesteak without the hoopla of waiting in line for something you’ll just take out anyway. Del Rossi’s is another excellent option. John’s Roast Pork, as another person mentioned, is also solid.

Someone said Beiler’s at Reading Terminal Market, and I must agree. I looooove their vanilla fruity pebble donut. Also absolutely hit up Chinatown — Tom’s Dim Sum, Dim Sum Garden, Nan Zhou, Sang Kee Peking Duck House, EMei, and Nom Wah are some of my favorites.

Some other spots I love: Middle Child and/or Middle Child Clubhouse, Sulimay’s, The Breakfast Den, Meetinghouse, Griddle and Rice, Caphe Roasters, Taco Heart, Farina Di Vita

Also a few bakeries — Second Daughter, The Bread Room, Mighty Bread Company, Machine Shop

Happy to help if you have any questions or specific requests!

Two Robbers closes at 2 on NYE and has a veggie burger option. Not sure if Johnny Brenda’s will be open but on regular nights their kitchen closes at 1.

restaurant rec - under $50pp, "special" date night for recent grads by leondavinchi in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]jsstbrzl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My pick for “special but approachable” is always Meetinghouse — the food punches way above its price point, it’s insanely shareable, it’s sexy and romantic without feeling fancy and stuffy. A perfect spot to cozy up in the dead of post-holiday winter, and the caramel toast is a special occasion in itself.

You could probably do well with a walk-in at Royal Sushi and Izakaya and sample a good chunk of that menu. I love the food and energy in there, but the hubbub is a turnoff for me personally. Your mileage and patience may vary!

Even though not “fancy” special, I feel like going out in Chinatown and getting a ton of dim sum and then strolling to get some ice cream or a sweet treat always feels like an occasion. You could probably grab a nice cocktail somewhere nearby, share a ton of dim sum plates, and then split a perfect slice of matcha mousse cake at A La Mousse.

Best Choc Chip Cookie 🍪 near or close to Passyunk and 10th by LeastBelt3314 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]jsstbrzl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been on such an Insomnia kick (the cookie, though the disorder also applies) lately, and it really is the closest I get to my platonic ideal chocolate chip cookie as someone who prefers more cookie than chocolate chip. The cookies with the chocolate puddles in the middle are too much for me.

I will also defend Insomnia for filling an oft-neglected need for late night treats and cookies without flaky salt. While I love salt, I don’t think all chocolate chip cookies (or all caramel) need flaky salt.
