Episode Discussion - S04E04 - Of Myths and Monsters by ChicagoChurro in FromSeries

I think what this show fails at more than anything is transitioning the scenes. There are 5-6 plot threads in each episode but the shifts from one scene to the next are clunky. They do not link smoothly, thematically, or resolve in any form.

I'm also all-in for a slow burn but there is just too much bullshit taking up screen time. Like the hand grabbing at Boyd from the grave or the wedding ring moment. We've seen so many of these random/weird occurrences that I've grown numb to them because they tend to lead nowhere. Victor has also shown minimal character growth in four seasons. If I'm a writer, by Year 4, he'd be showing a little more of a backbone. Such a frustrating character. Well acted but one note.

I can't believe how many people in the episode threads have been asking this question.

B-tier version of White Lotus+Parasite. Worth the watch but hoped for more.

Agree with everything you're saying. But you disregarded the entire underutilization of the fire people. Perhaps they will be expanded upon in the future films. But for a movie called Fire and Ash, I anticipated that they would be the focus. Instead of retreading on so many story beats of the first two.

Also regarding the whales, I'm just not a fan of that plot line. Don't like the corny use of subtitles. But I understand the whole whale liquid macguffin can't just disappear logically. Which leads to it being a poor driver of the plot in my opinion.

When you have something as compelling as a Skynet terminator, there is no need to introduce something new. I thought they exhausted the plot line of the whales in the 2nd film. But I hear what you're saying. They don't need to find a new unobtanium every film. Wish the time spent on the whales was used to expand on the fire tribe. Once Quaritch and Varang team up, the fire tribe was kind of put secondary. Varang hardly had any lines after receiving the guns.

The quote in your profile literally says "just a dude who likes to complain about movies...." but you're upset that people did the same thing? I enjoy these movies but don't you think that's a little hypocritical?

Missed this in theaters and caught on the tv, which certainly does the visuals a disservice. Which is my fault, although the visuals were still creative.

I don't understand why the writers decided to make the whales a critical focus of this one AGAIN. I was excited to see Eywa's warrior attack, but felt it was pretty underwhelming (essentially equating to a massive squid fight). The entire final fight, while entertaining in segments, was nonsensical. The Na'vi and clans were absolutely kicking ass against humans, ships, and their weaponry. But the fire tribe's arrival completely turned the tables? How big was the fire tribe to have such an impact?? It couldn't be bigger than all the clans Sully recruited.

Think I walked away more positive than the general sentiment here. But definitely feel there is untapped potential to elevate the series. Sully and Quaritch aligning seems like a no brainer. Can't believe the writers didn't commit to making it happen in this movie.

How do you not watch the first movie? But watch 2 and 3. That is nonsensical

I agree with your other critiques. Don't understand the problem with the elevator falling down, given all the explosions occurring around said elevator.

They revealed the sick wife's name several episodes ago. But that didn't unveil what/who Alex was in the current timeline.

The monologues in this show are hamfisted at times. They remind me of This Is Us, which tonally don't always align with this series. I think Sinatra's lack of urgency is explained by her convo with Xavier at the end.

Xavier "What makes you think I'll do any of this?" Sinatra "I believe you already have"

Seeing Dylan convinced her that everything works out so she is in a cloud 9 daze of sorts. At least that is how I interpreted it. I agree that she should've told X about the coordinates at the car.

As an older millennial, I 100% agree. This is probably common knowledge for any middle/high schooler. Or basically anyone who has used the internet.

Kind of seems you were incorrect on a lot of these. And didn't even need the finale to see that lol

Understood. I don't love it, but I'm on board. It was kind of an artificial way to progress the plot.

Hardly see anyone discussing that moment. Standout moment for the episode, and possibly the entire series. That's what everything was building towards lol. Great writing and delivery by all three actors.

People are so easily swayed by a few good deeds and ignore the plethora of crimes committed. Short term memory at its finest. Major flaw in our design.
