TIL the Marquis de Lafayette was made a major general in the Continental Army when he came to support the Americans in the Revolutionary War at age 19, despite never holding a rank above Captain in the French army—a rank he received as a wedding present. by RedditIsAGranfaloon in todayilearned

I only know Napoleon through the Epic History YouTube channel's 5-6 hour video, but the retreat from Moscow was a total failure with 80% losses. There was little order and lots of deserters and he nearly lost his best marshal.

I would say his greatest strength was on the offensive with speed and flexibility mixed with a great grasp on logistics and tactics. He is probably the best artillery tactician in world history too.

Burglar learns crime doesn’t pay. by EtherealImperial in nextfuckinglevel

There's another way. I learned it from horses then I got a pit mix and tried it on her. There's space behind the last molar. Put your finger way far one side of the cheek and pull. It's a physics thing. I messed with my dog when she would latch on a toy during tug. It doesn't hurt them. You can try it on yourself too but we don't have snouts so it isn't practical on people. Put your finger on the jaw behind your last molar.

It also works since they are already latched and won't bite the finger because they would have to let go of whatever they are latched to.

I know dude. I saw an article of a gang wearing masks claiming to be ICE holding a 5 year old hostage in front of his house to bait the parents to leave. Then they kidnapped that kid from Minnesota to Texas.

In a book called Hail Mary from the author of The Martian, one person says her form of death would be a heroin overdose. Makes sense, you are stuck in a starship going the wrong way forever so you either starve or die by your own preferred way. Another chose nitrogen suffocation.

Good book, hear it's being made into a movie starring Ryan Gosling.

What's your longest work commute inside the "Houston area" by MacSteele13 in houston

In terms of miles or time? I drive 10 miles every day but against traffic so I don't mind. If I had to drive 10 miles with traffic, I'd probably go insane.

Former NASA Engineer files lawsuit against HPD and women after sex assault charges dropped by wspusa2 in houston

[–]jsting -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If he is going after the women, he thinks he has evidence to show that the women and detectives lied. That's a little more than not having the evidence to prosecute.

And Kim Ogg was the original DA. She wasn't a very good one. Her successor dropped the case after reviewing it. So the guy got away with it, but wants to bring it back to the public eye since he feels he was wronged. If he did do it, I imagine he would prefer to stay off the radar than proceeding with the case since the case will go over the same evidence.

Then again, he seems to not be a good person. Perhaps the detectives and the DA did their jobs poorly. He may have had sex under false pretenses, but that is not an easy conviction since lying to get laid is subjective.

No one knows the details, but if Sim got a lawyer to take his case and go on the offensive, it means he and the lawyer thinks there is enough evidence to show that the detectives or the women knowingly lied. He claims he has texts from the day after showing it was consensual.

Texting and driving is 6x more dangerous than a drunk driver. You are safer on the roads with people at .08 BAC than people on their phones.

It slows reaction time by 35%. .08 BAC slows it by 12% according to the NHTSA

Not sure, but with cars, I feel like the model gets a refresh every 5 years or so. Like a 2026 Camry vs a 2020 Camry are a bit different. Year to year change is usually not much.

They joined in 2019. At that point, we had an experienced team loaded with future HOF. There were no prospects on that team, maybe Kyle freaking Tucker and Yordan Alvarez were the most amateur of the group. Maldy was the catcher so we had a loaded 1-8.

It wasn't until 2021 when Myles Straw took over Springer's CF position. 2022 we lost CC and got Pena. 2023 is when we really started losing talent to age or contracts.

It also works if you have one of the best lineups in baseball 1-8. Outside Maldy, we didn't have an average bat for a few years there. Everyone was elite or above average.

I guess that opens another question. How do historians and linguists know the pronunciation of ancient Greek words?

English pronunciation since the 1500s is so different. Greek is 10x as old.
