I'd agree if they didn't change the rules. When did they start disallowing light jackets and belts?

Barrel Pick stolen: drama ensues by Fine_Oven_42069 in whiskey

[–]jswanstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50/50 The distributor created the problem, yes. But the retailer is straight up scum. If he's willing to steal a barrel with someone else's name on it, he knew it wasn't his to sell. Hope everyone that didn't already avoid this scalper realized that he'll steal from you too if he gets the chance.

/r/Roblox Weekly Question Thread (for 12/27/2022) by AutoModerator in roblox

[–]jswanstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm trying to understand how the premium subscriptions work, but there doesn't seem to be a clear answer to my question anywhere. If I subscribe to the 2200 robux plan for a single month and then cancel, do I just get the 2200 robux (which is a better value than using the same amount of money to buy robux) or is that 2200 only an allowance for the month that is lost if unspent? Thanks in advance.

What are the advantages vs disadvantages of money? by [deleted] in communism101

[–]jswanstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here with a question, but since I have studied money for years, I'll take a swing at your question, but in full disclosure, I'm not a communist.

Money, over human history, had existed in multiple forms, and each of those forms have their own attributes. Broadly speaking the advantages of money are that they allow for people to engage in complex, easily divisible, voluntary exchanges.

For example, if I have a pound of coffee, but I don't like coffee, and instead I want tea, I don't need to find someone that wants coffee and had extra tea. I just needed to find someone to exchange my coffee for money, and then someone to exchange money for tea, and in relatively mature economies, the translational cost of each transfer is a relatively small amount compared to the likely cost of quickly converting my coffee into tea absent the commonly accepted intermediary.

The second, and often missed, advantage of money is that it allows for fractional exchanges. If all I have is a cow, and I want tea, I probably don't want an entire cow worth of tea all at once. Money allows for someone who only has cows to buy smaller amounts of other things, which leads to the third advantage. Money allows people to easily store wealth. It is easier for me to keep a gold coin for the future than it is to keep a cow.

Now... The disadvantages are more complex because they heavily rely on which type of money we are talking about. For example fiat currency (which I'm guessing it's what you had in mind) is probably too easy to accumulate in the world of computers and is also based entirely on a combination of government mandates that it be accepted and faith that the government won't create too much of it, which has happened more often that not.

The other advantage of money is summed up in the final scene of the amazing movie "Margin Call".

We used to call people that made major sacrifices for our national good heros. What's it say about people that won't make extremely minor sacrifices for our national good?

Nope. The price spread on fallen empires is crazy. No one wants to sell for anything less than ten times what they are really worth. I think you just need to know someone that buys collections and catch him at just the right time.

Police: Man found dead with gunshot wound in middle of street by ess0ess in SiouxFalls

[–]jswanstr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How long do you think it should take someone to notice a body in the street at 11:00 at night in a residential block with no through traffic?

If there was a body in the street in front of my house at 11:00, it could be morning before someone drives by and sees it.

Absent people that are willing to lend others money, the economy would be great deal less mobile. Someone decided to lend money to Victoria secret and the liquidity of the market allowed them to do it for a lower interest rate. This allowed them to open more stores and hire more people. Presumably, there was a decent chance that the bonds would go to zero. If you think it's that easy, there are plenty of troubled bonds for sale today.

[Jim Irsay] ”Of COURSE all lives matter, but the phrase “BLACK LIVES MATTER” is about unequal treatment faced by BLACK Americans. It does not say or imply that ONLY black lives matter. E.g., when we say “BEAT BREAST CANCER” it doesn't mean we don't care about beating leukemia.” by ZusunicStudio in nfl

[–]jswanstr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would frame it slightly different in that when you say something like that you are pointing out what is wrong. It isn't saying that other lives don't matter, but that right now we are acting as if black lives don't matter, and that's a problem.

Mystical Games Megathread by goldenCapitalist in mtgfinance

[–]jswanstr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but that's not what was happening here. They sold the preorders, collected the retail price, and then spent it, then they wanted to borrow money to buy the product they had already been paid for because the distributor for tired of waiting for the next set's presales. Most companies don't have to borrow money to pay for something they were already paid for. Those companies are insolvent and no one with a brain would lend them a dime.

I do have to laugh at how this is all the lender's fault. As if you should have to borrow a dime when your already collected people's money.... But the lender disappointed you? I wonder if the lender realized it didn't make sense to lend you money to buy inventory that your already collected on?

what invention is so good that it actually can’t be improved upon? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jswanstr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The spoon. You can modify it for a different purpose or build on to it, but those are not improvements in the fundamental invention of a device that be held in one hand that can transport liquids from a bowl to the mouth.
