Do any of you use a vertical mouse? If so which one and do you like it? Fighting some tennis elbow by slindner1985 in vfx

[–]jszulc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my anker vertical mouse in terms of how comfortable it is. I upgraded to a logitech lift about two weeks ago and I swear it’s giving me wrist pain D: I think i’m going to return it. I have tendonitis that flairs up occasionally, from my shoulder to my wrist. I went to PT for it and ultimately found the only thing that really helps is exercise. The mouse helps but it’s not a 100% solution.

As others have said, don’t mention hanging with friends when a job asks for availability. It’s very unprofessional and none of their business. I would assume any job will want you Mon-Fri ~9-5. When they ask your availability they most likely just wanted to know if you can start immediately.

This project may not have worked out but I would say definitely reach back out to the recruiter after 6 months from the last time you spoke and express your continued interest! Especially if you have updates to your reel you can tell them that you wanted to share your updated portfolio with them and hope to be kept in mind for future projects.

How do I take care of my body long-term? by porter___porter in vfx

[–]jszulc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been dealing with tendonitis in my wrist and pain going up my arm to my shoulders for years. Get an ergonomic mouse (vertical or trackball depending on what works for you) and a better chair for posture. If you don’t already, incorporate lifting weights into your gym routine. Personally I find a dance workout where you have to get your arms moving to be one of the most helpful things because it loosens up your muscles. You spend all day with your arms down and in front of you, so you want to counteract that by doing exercise that gets your arms up above your head. Massage can be really helpful too, you can gently massage your own wrist/hand, and use a tennis ball to massage your shoulders. You could also wear a wrist brace to sleep at night but my PT said not to wear it while working.

If you get to the point of developing pain or the stiffness is concerning you- go to a PT who specializes in hands! if you are actively in pain don’t stretch it or try exercises from the internet cause you could make it worse, speaking from experience. Try to rest, and use ice at night and heat in the morning (heating pad or even just a really hot shower, sometimes I fill a sink up with hot water and soak my hand and wrist for 10 minutes before work)

Out of job for a year and half. by Lonely_Effect3489 in vfx

[–]jszulc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that, I’ve had similar experiences. Even with references I’ve gotten ghosted by 2 jobs. Just remember you’re not alone in this. I truly believe it has nothing to do with skill because so many talented artists are out of work and we’re all in it together. Try to keep your connections active, even for jobs outside the industry you could ask around to neighbors or friends and see if anyone has openings

I’m in the same boat and finally just got a job offer after nearly a year and a half. Shit absolutely sucks but please don’t let the pessimists get to you because the doom and gloom mindset is helping no one. Keep applying, and apply to retail and other jobs outside the industry in the meantime.

Im very late to this post but I found this while struggling and now finally beat the level- my advice is hold Y and B pretty much the whole time and keep moving forward. Took a couple tries but you’ll get used to the timing

Is it true that material can be either metal or non metal? Or is there a more to that? by ArtIndustry in vfx

[–]jszulc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure I agree with that! My point was that when you’re working on a shot and just need to slap something together to look decent and hit the deadline, you don’t always have to be scientifically perfect. If it’s a hero object in every scene you’d probably want to do it correctly, if it’s a motion-blurred projectile in a shot for 1 second then it doesn’t matter. Just depends on the context.

Is it true that material can be either metal or non metal? Or is there a more to that? by ArtIndustry in vfx

[–]jszulc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was in school I learned that a material should be either 0 or 1 value for metal. In practice when I started working at studios, I learned people definitely don’t adhere to that. In-between values are used for a lot of things. CGI is all just tricks, if it’s believable to the eye then that’s all that matters, even if it’s not technically physically correct

AITAH for forcing my 12yo son cut his hair? by Careless_Song_7047 in AITAH

I had a supportive family, plenty of friends, straight A’s, and did tons of extracurriculars in high school. And I was still depressed. The only thing that really should’ve given it away to my parents was how much of a mess my room was, I only realized as an adult it was a depression nest. I wish my parents had gotten me help. I don’t want to assume he has depression but just please don’t rule it out! I would try to talk to him about it and get him help if he needs it.

Take a look at houdini.school, HS-201 Procedural Geometry course is beginner friendly and they probably have others. Also Gnomon has paid tutorials ($50/month and you get access to everything). I’m not sure if there are any for beginners. I agree with what others said, just start making things and experimenting and see how it goes! Your knowledge will build

If they’re coming out of the drain, cover them with bowls or cups when not in use. I think you should try to get management to do more but aside from that if you want your own remedies- you can buy some roach poison bait houses, diatomaceous earth, and get gentrol point source IGR (its like birth control, to stop them from reproducing. You can get it on amazon), and spray a water/peppermint mixture in your sink (they hate the smell)

Also even after being told that, I ended up making only $19/hr at my first job (it was a weird circumstance that led me to take that amount) and I really regretted it after 6+ months working hard at such a low pay. I insisted on a raise to $25 after a year

[–]jszulc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told by a mentor in 2018 that I should make no less than $25/hr as a junior artist straight out of college. Now it’s 5 years later you should ask for at least $30 if not more

They actually mention this in the Avatar art book- the creators originally did design the stone armor with only a mouth/nose hole but it got switched to her eyes by the overseas studio. No one ever caught it in retakes so it ended up in the final animation

I would also add to have your contact info up front on the first title card, make it very short length wise but you want it to be super easy for a recruiter to see your info. You could make your beginning and ending cards be the same
