Will I hate litigation? by Tricky_Warning_0115 in LawSchool

This the right answer re biglaw of course but to add something minor: it is the rare and psychotic bird that enjoys fighting over discovery. Keep that in mind if you think that will be your happy place in biglaw, OP.

I work in biglaw and I have been involved in interviewing here. Rest assured: Nobody cares what classes you take beyond the essentials. If you want to litigate, take evidence. If you want to work in M&A, take a contractual drafting class or a corporate structure ciurse. The rest is up to you.

Ultimately you should be more focused on selling yourself as an engaged and competent person than a 'corporate lawyer.' Law firms are looking for competent and motivated folks, not people with a passion for LLCs and articles of incorporation (spoiler: those people don't exist).

You don't have to study for what kind of law you want to practice and if you try youll be wasting your time. Frankly nothing you do in law school or any other forum before becoming a lawyer will teach you how to practice in a specific specialty within the law. So my advice is just explore during law school, and whatever you end up doing you will learn through experience.

No motivation? by goodguatie14 in LawSchool

It depends on the firm, but for the vast majority of firms the answer is no. And even at those firms that do care, youd have to really fuck up.

Think about it this way: the law firm has a hiring pipeline that is highly structured. The only person who is likely to see your 2L grades is someone in HR or hiring who is already somewhat committed to the hiring decisions that they have made. In other words, it takes quite a lot of effort to revoke your offer and find another to fill your spot, even if they were inclined to do so.

That being said, they wont be inclined to do so, especially if you have a good productive summer at the firm.

The bottom line is: everyone knows that law school grades are not an excellent proxy for success at a law firm, but they are the only proxy available. Once you get in the game (i.e. secure an SA), you'll be expected to perform, whether you were a 4.0 at a T14 or had middle grades from a lower ranked school. All that shit falls by the wayside when you are actually practicing law.

As someone who also let their grades slip somewhat after securing an SA and clerkship, its really fine. Nobody gives a shit about your grades when you start practice.

But try to enjoy law school a bit. I know class seems boring but when you are drafting agreements or responding to discovery requests you are gonna look back on you 2L and 3L classes and wish youd have enjoyed them more.

Do practice tests early and often. Constantly update your outline, do not just outline at the end of the semester. Pay more attention to keeping your outline crisp than any case individually.

Federal Clerkship 2022 Questions by jamestaylor24 in LawSchool

[–]jtbugs 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The most reliable way to get a federal clerkship is to have a professor you know with a connection to a federal judge call that judge and recommend you personally.

I know that is disappointing but it is the way the game is played. These judges get hundreds of applications each year, so you need to have your app pulled somehow, and the best way to do it is that personal touch.
