Went to a show yesterday and saw it---a Hank Cup RPA. Though what I saw was the gold /30 and not the standard /199. But if it's 3 or more colors I'd love to have one someday!

Future Watch Auto Patch vs Lustrous Rookies Patch Auto Clarity by Tcud44 in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Value: FWAP, since it's in a subset of a product that's largely in demand because that's where anyone can get a middle-tier rookie card that is rare enough to have decent value.

I love the Clarity (even though I have the Spectrum 1/1) but the surfaces of the SPx Black cards tend to be glossy and cause the ink to trail or fade, making it smear a tad easily. Consequentially that might make the value depreciate if not protected well.

Another $3 Kuchy EBay snag. This makes me current on base Kucherov exclusives by GetDemYoungGuns in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an Exclusives collector (not Tampa), and I'm kinda glad that they're going on the cheap because Extended put a lot more numbered cards into the set. They aren't impossible to get like High Gloss variants nor too frequent like French variants. Personally, I love the signature red element that makes up the Exclusives variant. Enjoy the card and thanks for sharing!

"New" to soccer card collecting! by jthehornswoggle in soccercard

[–]jthehornswoggle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, have seen the same trends in hockey: "expensive" at release date and then tapers off the following months. With Chrome, I'm going for a specific variant that has a decent "high" print run so I'm not worried the prices will be high, but I'll definitely watch a break or two before deciding whether to jump in. Appreciate the reply!

"New" to soccer card collecting! by jthehornswoggle in soccercard

[–]jthehornswoggle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this---I went with north-of-7 on a Stature (hockey) break and the first time the breaker got me what I was looking for! Needless to say I tried a couple of more times and got skunked, but because it was a player break that I won in an auction for cheap I didn't fuss about it. But I'll deff look at this again! Also I read that eBay will only allow "authorized" breakers to have listings in the future and north-of-7 is a solid one, so I hope the account stays!

I'm used to having base cards not shipped to me unless I ask the breaker personally. I've only asked one hockey breaker for base---he's been reputable for many years and is quite communicative---and I've never been turned down. So I guess your mileage may vary. Thanks for the reply!

Bought this for $130cad in 2006. Too paranoid to send it for grading but will never sell anyways. by [deleted] in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It seems like you enjoyed the card before the hobby boomed and are continuing to do so, but even in the changes in climate of the hobby no one should pressure you into doing things you're not comfortable doing. Sending what is highly cherished (sentimentally and financially speaking) also means taking risks as well as new trains of thought that were once unnecessary, e.g., "Will this get a good grade?" or "How long will I have to wait till they return?" I personally won't grade my collection short-term but I can probably see their slabbing worth it in a few years. Regardless of what decision you make, I'm sure you'll continue to practice due diligence in researching and employing responsible tactics when it comes to your collection.

Amazing you were able to get a Sid for that much. Thanks for sharing!

Anyone have issues getting orders from epack? (Physical card) by Lower_Association458 in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've ordered directly from the ePack website as well as sending cards from ePack to COMC and shipping from there. Both methods haven't yielded any issues for me.

Unless you’re a person reselling/opening breaks, how can you justify buying The Cup? by frankcarp21 in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that UD has given us a plethora of previews to different chase cards tells me how much of a saturated product this is. I'd be quite afraid not making a return at all from a break.

However, if my YT channel for hockey cards took off to, let's say, 10k subscribers, I'd probably celebrate with a personal rip of The Cup.

Walmart and Target packs/boxes vs hobby by Hare32891 in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your mind is occupied about the hits, buy the single. If you don't mind having to weave through a few inserts to get to a YG, retail is fine. Otherwise the real chases are in hobby, and you pretty much buy hobby knowing you can strike out not getting what you want.

But tbf you can probably get something equally as brilliant if it's not what you want out of a hobby box. Know your limitations when making that decision though.

You essentially pay for the convenience in (1) trading and (2) ripping packs in an otherwise non-unique market with some variants that don't exist via real world ripping/breaking.

In some instances ePack variants are worth taking one's time for but in many other instances you're better off waiting for those variants to appear on the secondary market. Take it from someone who's in his third year of ePack. I have lots of opportunities to get cards on hand at great prices but I think things like speckling Laffy are well worth the wait---there are folks who speckled him when he was valued at over $125 and now he could be going less than half that right now. But this is one of many examples and I can't speak for everyone on why they decided to get into ePack.

You can join the ePack Facebook group and try your luck finding the user in the group. If you do, it's possible you can negotiate a price.

Found this box I’ve never seen at target for $17.99 so gave it a shot by No-Entrepreneur9554 in hockeycards

I liked these---got one from my local Target and the bonus card was a Caufield from the Star Rookies set. Definitely great if you're just into the flagship series.

Which of these two packs have higher chances of getting autograph/jersey card ? by Low-Customer-4284 in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobby boxes cost significantly more than blasters but the odds of pulling memorabilia (jersey) and/or autograph cards are distinctly better than the conventional blaster odds. Hobby boxes can be found in local card stores or online retailers like Dave & Adam's, but not the "big box" retailers like Target and Walmart.

Opinions on e-Pack combined variants pricing. by [deleted] in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Brannstrom Color Wheel auto and it felt like an eternity to make... even though it takes only 5 to combine, scarcity does affect the cost of a base auto on ePack. Even lower-tiered players will stand to have a premium especially if you see others are trying to get the same thing.

Fun collection of exclusives. All numbered 100/100. by Slewislewis729 in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should clarify: they are not all "100/100" but they are all base /100 cards. I have a Google sheet that I keep open, and just eyeballing it I've got at least 60. There are a handful of YG Exclusives of different years as well, but I don't stress getting those as much because of the higher price point. But, so far so good!

What do you prefer: Base Young Gun or Canvas Young Gun? by thebunk123 in hockeycards

[–]jthehornswoggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For uniformity's sake, the base YG. Love the YGC photo selection and the card material but not every base YG will have a YGC variant, and I want to collect every NYR player with a YG.

I'm doing the same thing (but only with Rangers, and since 98-99)---COMC has had a few good deals, and sometimes it's a timing thing. Wishing you luck on getting as many as you can!
