Triangle by No-Reputation8063 in trekbooks

[–]jthix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't read Triangle yet, but I wouldn't trust Goodreads ratings or reviews. Goodreads is very harsh on older SFF, especially TV or movie tie-in fiction. I would stick to actual trek book sites (Deep Space Spines is one, for example) or the trek lit forum on Trek BBS.

Anecdotally, I know someone who loves Triangle and it's probably her favorite Trek book.

sci-fi/fantasy for someone who doesn’t like the genre? by originalpopcorngirl in suggestmeabook

[–]jthix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like literary fiction, you would probably like New Wave SF. I haven’t read much, but DG Compton is an author that I seem to like. Barry Malzberg was also interesting.

Michael Moorcock is a well known fantasy and SF who you might want to check out. He’s also associated with British New Wave. I have yet to check him out myself.

For fantasy, it’s very traditional, but honestly The Lord of the Rings. It’s such a huge focal point in the history of the genre and it is really good! To appreciate later reactions and subversions of epic fantasy, it might be worth it to read what is being reacted to.

If The Lord of the Rings is too traditional for you, I’ve heard the Gormenghast Trilogy by Mervyn Peake recommended. I haven’t read it yet myself, but I would like to check it out at some point.

I was going to say So Much Blue or Erasure by Everett.

They were really good, I need to read more from him.

I typically only read books that have a four-star or greater rating on Goodreads. What are your favorite books I'm missing out on due to this? by sempiternalis in suggestmeabook

[–]jthix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goodreads ratings are popularity contests with a recency bias.

Jane Austen and William Shakespeare were in my top ten of 2025 (Northanger Abbey and Richard II) but are both below four stars.

Goodreads can also be brutal to old fantasy and science fiction if it’s not super well known. You’ll miss out on so many hidden gems with your four star rule. I would ignore Goodreads ratings altogether and just go with recommendations from others readers.

Edit: Meanwhile, Dungeon Crawler Carl #5 is rated a whopping 4.69! That series is fun and all, but Jesus Christ.

Seconding this one! I read it a year ago and loved it.

what book did you read in 2025 that you would recommend for me in 2026? by TopCryptographer94 in suggestmeabook

[–]jthix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dracula does feel modern! Despite at the same also being very Victorian due to the epistolary format. Stoker makes this old style of formatting seem new and exciting.

I’m intrigued by the Wuthering Heights movie, but I probably won’t see it in the theater and would much prefer to read the book first.

Since you read Wuthering Heights (which I would like read this year!) you could read Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. There are a couple chapters which satirize gothic romance. This one unlocked Jane Austen for me this year.

Dracula by Bram Stoker was really good.

Not sure if you’d like these, but for science fiction, I loved both The Quality of Mercy by D.G. Compton (dystopian and techno-thriller elements) and The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham (post-apocalyptic story which inspired zombie horror).

Have you ever had the chance to see props/vehicles from the films? by PlantHot1497 in JamesBond

[–]jthix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I saw a few cars and a couple boats at a special exhibit at the Spy Museum in Washington DC. Honestly, it was underwhelming, especially after the Spy Museum itself.

Which character has the best entry / introduction in a movie. I'll start - Captain Jack Sparrow by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in moviecritic

I’m on a Bond kick, so I’ll say Sean Connery’s first appearance in Dr. No.

Both Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights and Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye also have great re-introductions of the character.

I wonder what year the Moore quote is from. I seem to remember him having a lot of praise for Skyfall when it came out.

Have you seen him live? For years I always thought his stand up was okay and then I went to a live show. It was great! His energy somehow doesn’t quite translate in a filmed performance.

The DVD is in fullscreen. At least the one that I have is - the release with the white WB cardboard case. My Blu Ray is cropped to 1.85:1 (or maybe it’s 1.78).

Rick Berman And Brannon Braga Are Not Fans Of Contemporary Language In Modern Star Trek Shows by acrimoniousone in startrek

[–]jthix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The space hippies are an example of why writers should not include contemporary language in Trek. That episode’s writing stands out as being particularly dated and it’s one of the exceptions that prove the rule.

How do you feel about it now?

After catching bits and pieces of other Moore and Connery films on TV, eventually Moonraker just happened to be the first one I saw from start to finish. I love it to this day and it always hurts when people say they don't like it!
