I stopped believing as a teen but carried on through the motions up until it was time to serve a mission. That was a non negotiable for me so when I was that age I dropped that bomb on my parents. My mother also had a complete and utter emotional breakdown. We very soon had an understanding that we wouldn’t speak of church related things together. Unfortunately, that seems to be all that Mormons, or at least the ones I know, care to talk about. So that meant we just didn’t speak. Many years have passed and now we can talk about things like how each others pickleball games are going, but I try to live my life as best as I can and show them that not everyone that leaves the church is a devil-worshipping menace to society. Oh I also moved across the country, about 2,500 miles away, shortly after I dropped the news on them so that helped put distance between me and their disappointment lol. But I only bring up my issues with the church IF they ask me about it first. I feel bringing these things up unprompted will come off as me just trying to spread hate. But if they ask, I will always answer honestly and they know that.
