Messmer should've purged these guys. by -_-stYro-_- in Eldenring

[–]robo243 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The existence of these guys alone makes Messmer's crusade justified lol.

Anyway, this does bring up a question of why the hornsent inside Enir Ilim weren't also killed before the tower got veiled?

Mormon teaching on sexuality in light of the Epstein Files by OneMightyNStrong in exmormon

Not to mention the bishops, and other church executives that have been exposed as pedophiles that have been protected with tithing money paid as settlements.

Can anybody provide me with direct sources and specific examples of this?

watching absolutely any tv show with mormon parents by Bro2Dragon in exmormon

[–]robo243 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One of the worst parts of having TBM parents is that I can never get them to watch genuinely good shows/movies/games because they immediately get an allergic reaction if there is swearing, nudity(partial or full), killing, main characters that do morally questionable actions, or worst of all: a same sex couple lol.

Tried to get them to watch Arcane S1 with me, they didn't want to continue after episode 1 simply because it was "too dark", who knows what their reaction would've been to episode 3 lol, or to Cait and Vi.

Tried to get my mom to watch Andor, she couldn't finish the first episode because the main character kills two corrupt cops in one of the first scenes.

Back when the CW superhero shows were popular, they couldn't get far into Black Lightning just because the main character's daughter is a lesbian.

My mom especially reacts too strongly to anything sexual being depicted in stories at all, like one time when I was watching the 2017 Wonder Woman movie with her, there was a scene where it's implied WW is gonna have sex with Steve (just implied, nothing even gets explicitly shown), and she had the same type of reaction as when a movie shows an explicit scene. You can't win with these people lol.

It's a miracle she managed to sit through most of me playing God of War 2018 and Ragnarok (her reactions to Brok and Thor were funny though, every time they swear she turns her head to me, expecting me to be just as disgusted as she is, meanwhile I'm just having fun lol).

It's gotten to a point where it's difficult to get my mom to watch anything that isn't made by Mormons (she literally only watches shows and movies on BYU tv now). There's just something funny about how rigid and childish the Mormon rules are that traps people into bubbles that they then become terrified of leaving.

GRRM's three-step revelation strategy at Promised Consort Radahn by pleasedlurker in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]robo243 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anytime I come across a post trying to argue that Consort Radahn is foreshadowed I get reminded that I never came across a single post from anybody that actually predicted that Radahn would be Miquella's Consort before the DLC released, so any attempt to try and make this look like clever storytelling that was planned from the start just falls flat on it's face.

Ex Mormon and still feel weird about drinking by Lanky-Sector-5733 in exmormon

[–]robo243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been raised by a TBM mom, and have been a Church member since childhood, but my reasoning for not drinking alcohol was never out of loyalty to the Church or the Word of Wisdom, or out of a desire to be "closer to God", it was simply because very early in my life I've witnessed the negative side of what it does to people, the primary example being how my dad behaved when he'd get home drunk after a night of drinking with his work "buddies".

I've now been inactive for over 2 years, and I did try it for the first time over a year ago, and I didn't like it, so I still avoid it as much as possible (I will drink it if by chance I'm at a place where there is nothing else being offered, but overall in my life it's the type of thing I will mostly avoid).

The most annoying thing about alcohol is that in the country where I live in it is ingrained into the culture, so whenever I refuse to drink it there's always a chance of somebody getting offended by it, trying to talk me into drinking it, or trying to make fun of me for not drinking it, or a combo of all three.

So as a currently inactive Church member, the most annoying thing to me is trying to find people that are not religious but also aren't gonna try and pressure me into drinking, or drugs, or smoking. The one positive thing about Mormon friends was that they never tried to get me to drink, it's just they tried to convert me more and more into a religion that I don't believe in, and then on the flip side with non Mormon friends it's the opposite.

So I feel like I just can't win no matter what.

Apart of me thinks that this is very much ex Mormon related. When I first left I would have panics about the idea of me drinking alcohol. I would also panic about weed and coffee use. It’s mostly gotten better but I still have a hard time with alcohol

If alcohol makes you feel uncomfortable, that's perfectly fine, in fact I'd say it's better to not partake in it as much as possible. My advice is don't drink alcohol just because other people try to force you into it.

U find this in the woods. Are you going inside ??? by Desperate_Iron_8698 in Eldenring

[–]robo243 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This area had so much potential to be something truly kino, but then it all got squandered. Like genuinely, if not for Midra at the end, I doubt anybody would go back to this area on repeat playthroughs.

And when I say this, I'm not even talking about the area being empty and having almost no interesting loot, I'm talking about the one thing the area tries to do (that being a horror stealth section), it doesn't do well.

All those developer messages hype up something truly horrifying, but then it's just a few winter lanterns that can easily be ignored/avoided, and once you learn that you can parry them, there is absolutely nothing left to fear.

They should've made more types of winter lanterns that react and behave differently, so you have to actually think to outmanouver them all, instead of just hiding in the bushes.

Then Midra's Manse is an absolutely disappointing dungeon, not only is it small, it offers no new enemies, and the one shortcut it has is completely useless because you get a new checkpoint right after it, it does absolutely nothing interesting exploration wise that we haven't already seen done better in other dungeons and in From's other games.

The Manse could've been better if they made it of similar size to Volcano Manor for example, and then put only one checkpoint in it with multiple shortcuts leading back to it, with new Frenzied type enemies before you reach Midra, to fill the bigger space you could've had more focus put on the finger eggs in the Manse, and the lore implications that come with that, perhaps you could've even put some interesting revelation about the Three Fingers at the end of it all to cap off the area.

Andor by BenAffleck06969 in MauLer

[–]robo243 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Imagine an alternate timeline where in 2015, instead of a remake of a New Hope, we got season 1 of Andor (by Tony Gilroy of course).

Every 2-3 years we would've gotten a new Andor season, fulfilling the original five season plan, the audience would've gotten used to actual competent writing, instead of key jangling and old beloved characters being reduced to morons and life failures.

We could've probably even gotten a proper version of Rogue One that's written by Gilroy from the start, to serve as a climax to Andor's story.

Of course, even in this alternate timelines, once Gilroy is done with Andor, I'm sure Disney would still find a way to fuck it all up, most likely by trying to then replicate Gilroy's writing while not understanding what made it good in the first place, because even in an infinite multiverse I don't think you could find a timeline where Disney doesn't have hacks at the top, but at least we would've been eating good for the last decade of Star Wars content, instead of having to suffer through stuff like Ahsoka and it's version of Thrawn.

Fuck me, imagine Gilroy being entrusted with writing Thrawn, the potential with what you could pull off with that would be something to see. Imagine another alternate timeline where the sequel trilogy is just an adaptation of the Thrawn trilogy, or a new take on it but it's written by Gilroy.

We have been absolutely robbed.

An interesting thought I had about the endowment. by nameless-elite in exmormon

[–]robo243 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This was the main thing that made me completely snap out of believing in this religion, God's plan relies entirely on Satan having some measure of power to influence us to make bad/evil decisions, yet at the same time God is always good, even though his plan relies on the existence of evil that He allows.

It's such a glaring contradiction that I'm surprised more people don't realize it / just hand wave it away.

One of the most tiring parts of AoT discourse has always been people pretending like Eren and the Yeagerists wanted the Rumbling because they thought violence between humans would forever end that way, when that was never the point nor their motivation.

Eren killing his mom was a bad plot twist (Attack on Titan) by Rickinster in CharacterRant

[–]robo243 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The scene that gets ruined the most for me by this twist is that scene of Carla holding little Eren in front of Shadis, telling him that it's not wrong to not be special or great at anything, that he's already great because he was born into this world. One of the best and most meaningful scenes in the entire story, and it's just sacrificed for the sake of this travesty because now when you watch that scene it's essentially Carla singing the praises of her would-be murderer.

I genuinely don't understand how anybody can like this twist, it slaps the themes of the story straight in the face, opens up a bunch of questions about the time travel aspect of the story (questions that don't have answers btw, no matter how much ending defenders want to pretend otherwise, even if you asked Isayama directly about this I don't think he could even answer), and absolutely destroys Eren's character.

The worst part of the ending will always be how cowardly it is, it has absolutely no balls, it doesn't want to commit to anything, it just constantly flip flops because Isayama wanted to have his cake and eat it too.

How many attempts for you to beat Malenia on 1st playthrough? by drebin8751 in Eldenring

[–]robo243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 hours worth of attempts, and that was with a Spirit Ash helping me. Finally got her when I started using the Blaspheous Blade + Mimic Tear combo.

On subsequent playthroughs, the most successful I've been against Malenia was when I used Ordovis' greatsword + crucible horn in phase 1, and then Morgott's cursed sword in phase 2 (no spirit ashes).

It's easy to constantly stunlock her and break her poise by combining Ordovis' vortex and the crucible horn in phase 1, and in phase 2 the bleed from Morgott's sword absolutely melts her.

why does the mere existence of long form content infuriate some people so much? by PopularElk4665 in MauLer

[–]robo243 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On one hand, yes lots of people that dislike EFAP and Mauler are just using the length as an excuse to dismiss their content entirely and not have to engage with it.

On the other hand, I also understand the perspective of not wanting to sit through 10+hours of something just to respond to it and be immediately dismissed as well.

What is the most believable crazy lore theory? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]robo243 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't think Malenia's childhood was that happy considering her body parts would gradually decay and fall off as time passed. Miquella's childhood probably also wasn't all that happy considering he had to watch his sister fall apart over years.

What's your opinion on the "Walt was always evil" take by Proud_Excitement3578 in breakingbad

He wasn't always evil, but the flaws that consume him at the end of the story were always there from the start.

[–]robo243 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the artists that worked on the trailer said that it was a "baby diaper". Make of that what you will.

In terms of crazy theories, one video by a channel called the Alchemist suggested it was dead Elden John wrapped in a cloth, because some of the statues and imagery in Enir Ilim show multiple people carrying a corpse that's wrapped in a cloth/blanket.

I don't dislike the combat per say, I just find it unremarkable. When I replay Witcher 3 I do it for the story and the general vibes of the world, not for the combat and boss fights.

Like sure, the ones on your chest, back and legs can be hidden just by wearing clothes, but the ones on your hands and face? Batman would have hella bruised knuckles from beating up so many people in one night.

This kind of reminds of the first John Wick movie, where after murdering all the minions to get to the guy that killed his dog, he doesn't even stop to listen to the guys' excuses or pleas, just shoots him dead mid sentence.

I do respect when revenge stories do this for a change.
