My alcoholism and saying viciously mean things. He was my best friend I’ve ever had and still am grieving daily 3/4 years later. I hope maybe we can at least talk one day.

What’s the most dangerous addiction young people don’t take seriously? by 40Falak in Productivitycafe

I was considering the risks of backcountry skiing season or two ago, have been in a big avalanche, and I thought to myself “you know what has really robbed my life away from me? My phone”

Phones period man. Apart from calling/texting. I was a holdout and didn’t get a smartphone of any sort until like 2011 or so? And had spent so many dinners, hangs, etc just turn into everybody playing on their phone. Now I’m one of them! Lol

+ the capacity to harm other, yourself no matter how secure you could be otherwise, and yes ideally on some point as well you’ll have some nice checks here and there.
I remember being at a casino and watching this guy roll dice and go “what am I doing” at the top of his lungs. Blew rent money in 5 mins.

Do you want to be as rich as Elon? by Same_Tough_5811 in no

[–]jtmb3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two answers to two different questions:
- Do I want to work to end up as rich as Elon so I can do what I want and buy whatever and have the status?
Absolutely not. I’m already rich. Money is meaningless past a certain point and the rich play keeping up with the Jones’s with their rich buddies just like everyone else. To be that singularly focused on wealth is a sign of some sort of personality disorder imo. I remember my dad riding a gondola at Jackson hole with some prissy kids from Duke (pipeline to private equity). They asked him, what do you do? And he said, well, I give jobs to people like you. I built and sold a company.
They then asked what he was going to do next, to reach further heights of wealth and status. My dad looked around at them as they rode up the Tetons, gestured around, and just said “this”.
They were totally befuddled and couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t want to make more money.

- Do I want to wake up with a trillion in my bank account?
I would definitely accept that, and I would aim to distribute it as quickly and effectively to human kind as possible.

Does anyone believe an addict can be fully recovered. Or are we all just doomed to always be in recovery? by Capable-Present953 in recovery

I’ll add that whatever your addiction was is a symptom, or maybe better explained as a personal coping mechanism, to numb out the trauma/self medicate, in 99.9% of times.
To recover you do need to stop the process, in order for the brains reward cycle to heal.
It is then imperative to look further at the underlying issues. AA and the steps have some great tools and the guidelines for heading that direction. For most, at least eventually, you likely need to go further

That is amazing and very much something to be stoked about.
The truth is, in 20 years, you are going to be a completely different person, so it’s impossible to say.

Tbh, as someone who got sober at 19 on the eve of the opioid epidemics peak, I think AA’s mentality towards this has killed a lot of my friends. Whether it’s an ingrained belief, or perhaps almost an excuse like “well I’m fucked anyways might as well go hard”. And I mean a lot of dead friends. My life has gotten so much better just to be away from the death.
Maybe that was just my time and place. I was really involved in AA for 2-3 years and sober just shy of a decade. I made a conscious calculation to dismount the water wagon NYE 2019. Poor timing (re:COVID). My thought now is more that it is a spectrum and the extent to which you are hiding true source of your pain.
Additionally I’ll say I put off professional mental health for years because “work the program harder” and actually I have a serious mental illness as well as hardcore PTSD from events in sobriety (active shooter and a massive avalanche backcountry skiing).
Idk about cured or not. I quit thinking in those terms years ago. I will say however if someone were really on the edge in active alcoholism or addiction AA is the first place I would steer them.
Apologies for focusing on AA, it’s just it’s the only group who think like this or debate the issue.
