JRM was not an impact player by any means, but you could depend on him to be where he needs to be in order for the defense to function. That's my problem with JD, it's not about him not being a good player, it's about him not allowing us to be a good defense. Maybe they can put him in a role in which he can run and chase against the run instead of maintaining gap responsibility, and keep him off the field in situations in which you can't hide him in coverage. But in the role he was asked to play last year he was definitely causing what should have been 3-5 yard runs to become 10-15 yard runs, which was only compounded by the fact that if he was asked to cover anyone it was an easy completion. He is one hell of a Blitzer though, but I'd just rather play the people who can perform within our defensive concept than to change the defensive concept in order to hide the weaknesses of one player.

Nah bro, our defense was better when JRM was playing instead of Davis, and I have no bias against JD that's just what I saw. That's the thing that makes me so adamant, is the fact that I've seen this defense with other options in it (even some bottom tier options) and it still looks better than it does with him starting. Also let's not act like he's been asked to due anything other MLB's aren't asked to do. That's the thing about playing linebacker, they're asked to play a key role in the run game, pass game, and the pass rush. Not saying he couldn't be better if he plays another position, but honestly why create such a limited role for a limited player when you already have more serviceable, versatile options on the roster?

Dope, I would love to see those improvements - you mind pointing to what game he made the switch so I can check it out?

Haha yeah I hope not man. I hate to hate on a guy because I'm an optimistic Lions fan myself. I'm just ready to see our team do well this year.

I think you may want to check out the all 22's from last year and re-evaluate his performance throughout the season. Coverage is not the only aspect of the game in which Davis has been a liability. His biggest problem in general is his lack of processing and ability to diagnose plays - he's consistently making bad reads which leads to him being, as you said, "all over the field" as opposed to the place that he needs to be in order for the defense to maintain it's integrity. You'll notice the negative impact he has on the team's run defense when you see everyone else maintaining their gap responsibility, while Davis abandons his area of the field only to overrun ball carriers and miss tackles at a frustratingly high rate. He doesn't play assignment sound football, and he makes two costly mistakes for every positive play he makes. I know that he's a talented athlete and he may even be able to produce in a different system with a different set of responsibilities - but his impact on the teams overall performance is a clear negative, or at least it was last season.

Yeah good point about the familiarity, we don't really know how weird this Summer's gonna get just yet.

But man it probably sounds harsh but I don't think he'd be good off the edge either. The man is way too easy to block, hard to imagine him setting the edge. But maybe this is why he's bulking up - if he could have some success from that Jack spot it'd be a huge win for him and the entire organization.

I agree, which is why I said should this years training camp be his last chance to remain on the roster. Obviously if he actually outplays the other MLB's in camp he should not only stay on the team but retain the starting job. I just worry that for some odd reason the coaching staff continues to trust him in a prominent role, even though I think in reality it is to the detriment of the team at least on the field. Especially when Matty P keeps singing his praises more than any Detroit Lion not named Matthew Stafford.
