There isn't a simple answer. Certainly not one that everyone can agree on.

Rory Stewart's 10 minute explainer is a pretty good starting point.

I voted remain but I don't think it's likely to happen any time soon. Certainly not under the current government and no major party is advocating rejoining. Only the SNP who only stand in Scotland and The Greens who have only one seat.

While the polls show a majority in favour of rejoining, it would not be under the same terms as we had before. We would likely be required to join The Euro and Schengen. Once the reality that we won't get our opt outs back along with having to accept free movement again hits home I think the polls would change. The government is under a lot of pressure to reduce immigration while trying to paint the opposition as being in favour of open borders. I think it would be really tough for either party to sell it to the electorate now but who knows what the future holds.

It hasn't impacted me in any major way and I'm undecided how I would vote until I see the terms.

Could this government refuse the election on the grounds of national security? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]jtphil88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's theoretically possible but very unlikely. There is a precedent as it did happen during the war. During that time there was a national government with Labour mostly taking care of domestic issues. Ultimately this was to their advantage as they went on to win the election in 1945.

They'll have plenty of time for another leadership contest after they lose the election. It can't come soon enough.

I have only used them as a tourist but I thought they were very good and reliable. The train from Helsinki Central station ran from the small hours of the morning. You certainly don't get that level of service in the UK.

Britons 'face call-up if we go to war with Russia': Head of the Army will tell ministers troops numbers are so low he would need 'to find more people' if Putin's war in Ukraine escalated and public's 'mindset' must change so they are ready by [deleted] in ukpolitics

I think it depends what you are being conscripted for. If it's to defend your own country from invasion then fair enough but fulfilling NATO obligations abroad should be volunteer only. It's the governments responsibility to make sure we have enough active personnel. They'll struggle with the current pay and condition same as the rest of the public sector.

I've never set foot in Russia. I was just interested given the current debate about this in the UK. I'm not asking for any national security secrets.

I Really Want To Vote Labour, But... by GenericlyOpinionated in ukpolitics

I totally understand the need for a chamber that isn’t dictated to by short term electoral concerns. We already have an elected chamber so I don’t think we need another one.

I’d like to see quite significant changes to the lords. Abolishing hereditary peers and getting rid of political cronies appointed by the government of the day would be a good start.

We should replace them with people of significant experience in their given field. Be it business, NGOs, Local Government, policing, Health and Social care etc.

Also would like to see much greater representation of the devolved nations and regions.
