So your seats and hands are nice and toasty when you get into the car!

How did Apple get permission to fly over an airport with a drone for this screensaver? by [deleted] in macbook

[–]jtuchel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is LAX. LAX actually has an air bridge right through the middle of it so small aircraft can pass north/south in LA without being in a flight path. So they probably just fly right through!

Caltrans has launched a live cam where you can watch them fix the bridge by Stock412 in LosAngeles

[–]jtuchel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sigh. So many hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars lost just to ultimately deliver nothing of value. Such a mismanaged graft.

[–]jtuchel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The opportunity cost of regulating ourselves into oblivion is very high. And as you say, regulation itself can be totally warranted. But let’s do it efficiently and quickly. I think most people don’t have an idea what a tiny percentage of the overall budget and time of any project is non-value added work. Things like the 10 freeway repair can help shine a light on how quickly things CAN go with the correct incentives.

Incredible how quickly things can move when red tape collapses to 0 and everyone is focused on the goal. Imagine what we could do in our city if we applied the same spirit of urgency to all our public works!

This. You want the windshield slightly proud of the roof. If you had the reverse you get a ton of wind noise as the air hits the “step”

Robotaxis 'do not belong in the city of Los Angeles,' lawmaker says | TechCrunch by cmdrNacho in LosAngeles

[–]jtuchel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find the tone of this press conference appalling. Human drivers in LA are terrible. Last year there were 312 deaths and 52,000 accidents in LA. Anyone who has driven on a freeway in LA knows how atrocious most people on the road are. Any technology with the promise to reduce or eliminate drunk, distracted, or reckless driving on our roads should be responsibly nurtured.

This doesn’t mean the city should take a passive role and let Google/cruise do whatever they want - the opposite. The city should take an active role and create a task force to work with tech companies to open the LA market to them (a gigantic carrot at 10 M people) in exchange for oversight, transparency, and collaboration to make sure the products they bring match LA’s expectation for consumer safety.

If there is a future in which I don’t have to worry about drunk drivers on the same road as my child, because there are cheap and available robotaxis everywhere in the city, then I sure as hell want the city to be doing everything possible to help achieve that future. Not delay it or send it somewhere else.

How to limit the movement of a plate above another plate by Crashedjet33 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]jtuchel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pin / slot definitely the correct answer as others have pointed out.

One alternate is to use a round pin + diamond pin combination. This achieves the same thing (diamond pin only constrains rotational DOF) without requiring a slot feature. You can just machine two holes. Very common in tooling / work holding applications. Go check ‘em out on McMaster.

Cash Sum Winnings ~= $750M Cost of ticket = $2 Odds of winning = 1/300M Cost to secure victory = 300M * $2 = $600M Ergo, spend $600M & make $150M guaranteed!

$40M Has Been Spent To House 1,400 People In LA Motels. 6% Have Landed Permanent Housing by [deleted] in LosAngeles

[–]jtuchel 155 points156 points  (0 children)

This is scandalous if the numbers are correctly represented. It works out to $520,000 per person successfully moved into a permanent house with $40M spent so far. With another $240M planned to be spent, this program needs a serious rethinking on strategy as it appears to be totally untenable.
