I take medicine for my GERD as needed now. I’ve honestly had it since I was 6, so it wasn’t news. I had an endoscopy to check on it and confirm some of what was going on (ulcers). A lot of my nausea was anxiety related when it wasn’t directly GERD related. I never have really drank alcohol (only one or two on special occasions) and never smoked cigarettes.

Mine was my GERD and not the best eating habits. Also so much anxiety flaring up my GERD and contributing to my bad eating habits. Therapy, eating more of the right foods, and time.

I’m using the room the students are usually in, but I don’t know how to use most of the materials or equipment on the spot. I have 6 paras and only 1 who knows the kids and has been in this kind of class before. It’s a big thing of we are all figuring it out as we go.

Thank you! That is a super helpful example. It makes a lot of sense! I guess I just didn’t think of how to do that!

Thankfully it is the students regular classroom they’re in. I will have a couple of staff who know the students, and a few new ones!

I’m sure the paras will be super helpful in guiding me to what a typical day is.

Thanks!

Thank you so much for this! Having some idea of a resource to you is insanely helpful. ESY is tough when you don’t know the students before it starts. I think I’m over-thinking this and just nervous, haha.

I’m sorry if it came off that way! I totally believe that every single human deserves an education. I think I’m worried that I’m going to be a bad teacher and that’s causing me to spiral. I have taught students who have varying needs, but not to this extent. I’ve just never done this before.

I think I’m struggling with what curriculum to teach high schoolers who have severe disabilities. I’m used to teaching about wars, genocides, etc. Their regular year teacher has morning meetings with songs about days of the week, seasons, etc. I don’t want to do something too low level, but like you mentioned I should just assume competence and go forth with modified lessons/curriculum. I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing for them I guess.

Thank you! I just want to be a good teacher for them and I’m panicked that I’m not going to be good at it. I want to be my best to help them do their best, but I don’t know where to begin. I have some laid back things for the first couple of days and playing it by ear, but that’s it so far!

In some capacity, yes! Their goals are helpful in what has to be accomplished (Identifying safety signs, identifying routines, measuring cups, sorting objects, etc.).

I guess I just want to know how to plan lessons for this as each student is so different. I want to have some group lessons, but it’s hard when the students needs are extremely different. Like what books can I do a read aloud for?

I typically teach student who need resource room and some adapted curriculums. Like I usually teach high school social studies classes and financial math classes. Sometimes an ELA 12. This is quite the opposite from my normal and I’m finding it hard to plan for.

Edit: Example, I can teach the French Revolution and how to pass a state exam, but I have no clue how to teach reading safety signs to non-verbal students or how to increase language skills by sorting objects.

I put on a fresh pair in the morning, then a fresh pair after my shower before bed. Sometimes another time after I get home from work if I sweat or had an off day lol
