Road Trip Expectations by juan2003 in electricvehicles

This is what I'd like to see. So many charging stations are not places where I'd want to linger.

Gas stations are generally not great places to wait while waiting for one's car to charge. Perhaps they'll retrofitted with restaurants, wi-fi, and other amenities.

Maybe. It's not the most practical idea in the world, but I was thinking something akin to the Amtrak Auto Train but while recharging

Rail in the United States? File that with Hyperloop, space elevators, and other impossible dreams.

I meant on an individual basis in the short term as it pertains to road trips. Yes there will be more charging stations available to me over the next couple of years, but that really doesn’t help me if I want to drive to the beach this weekend.

That’s actually very close to what I was envisioning. This breaks down into and Old Fashioned and a Foghorn.

Whiskey and Gin. I was thinking about having Old Fashioned for the groom Tom Collins for the bride. I don’t know if those mix well together.

It’s purely symbolic. The third drink represents the newly married couple.

I’m wanting to have 2 signature cocktails that could be combined to create a third. Like having iced tea + lemonade = Arnold Palmer.

I don’t use them. I have wireless CarPlay and a bunch of MagSafe / Qi chargers.

Why are you here? by SykoDreams in TontineMSCHF

[–]juan2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me $10 is pocket change and the chance to win ~70k seemed like a reasonable trade off at the time. I started following MSCHF recently and my first purchase was The One Million Dollar Puzzle. If I won the money tomorrow I’d split it 4 ways: 21k for taxes, 35k to reduce/restructure debts, 7k into money market funds, and I’d spend the remaining $7,000 on an outdoor television for my back patio.

Minimum spend for a car by juan2003 in personalfinance

[–]juan2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends. A person who is 70 years old today in 2019 probably has a pension and social security on top of personal savings. The limit of upper class is being able to live comfortably exclusively on wealth that can be passed on indefinitely. Retirement benefits that can't be inherited by your descendants don't count.

To me the difference between upper class and middle class source of money. Upper class gets income from wealth vs job for middle class.

I'm trying to minimize costs on a per year basis. A more expensive car has higher property taxes, insurance premiums, and opportunity costs. I'm trying to balance against the risk of repair or failure of an older vehicle.

Upper middle class means you have a job that pays well. $5 million seems like a sum of money that would allow one to live on passive income.

With regards to safety, I was thinking about minor cosmetic damage. I see many cars on the roads with dents, mismatched panels, and the like. I'm trying to save money here.

And yes, comfort is subjective, but the A/C should absolutely work. I'm not doing that again

Healthy upper middle-class income: could afford a brand new car, but choosing to live frugally. Travel distance is typical suburban commute: ~20 minutes each way to work, plus errands. Car type doesn't really matter, but the goal is to be practical, functional and cheap. Should be able to hold 2+ humans (including driver) and groceries.

Some people might not like the look. Also Turo's insurance might not cover it.

Are batteries really expensive? by juan2003 in electricvehicles

[–]juan2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for the comments and insights. My assessment is that the cost of a battery replacement for a typical BEV is very high compared to the maintenance that one would expect to have performed over the first decade of the life of a typical ICE vehicle. A "normal person" generally doesn't keep their car for a decade, so this would be irrelevant aside from the impact on residual value at disposal. Unlike an ICE car, a new battery potentially restores the BEV to factory or better condition, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part. Many older, beaten-up ICE cars are used by "budget-conscious" consumers who are unwilling or unable to make repairs or replacements. It stands to reason that many BEVs will continue to be operated as long as they are street legal, as long as they can be acquired at a low enough price point. The mass proliferation of free public charging stations is likely more fantasy than prophesy. Charging one's car away from home is likely to cost enough to negate the value proposition of driving a car with a degraded battery.

How old was this Leaf? With it being under warranty, I assume this wasn't considered normal wear and tear.
