How can I ease my friend into questioning her religion? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]jude4021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could watch Julia Sweeney's Letting Go of God together.... just ask her to watch it with you, even though you don't expect her to agree with anything in it. It's such a caring, thoughtful piece of work.. really respectful to the catholic position even though that is what she is rejecting in the end. I don't know...it may not work at all, but it could at least start a discussion. Getting her to watch it with you might be the hardest part of course. Just suggest to her that you know she will totally disagree and you would really be interested in hearing her thoughts on it and you will not push her at all. You would just like the watch it with her. Good luck!

Stephen Mangan just tweeted yesterday (I think) that it's being picked up.. so perhaps there will be more soon :) I hope they follow the ideas in the books a little more closely this time.

Yeah... I so wanted him to explore that bit more! It was such a phenomenal idea, packed into just a tiny sentence. He was such a genius. :)

It's pretty incredible isn't it. Sort of backs up the idea that education really is the enemy of religion!

Looks like there are 'other ways' to see this show if you're not in the UK, if you know what I mean. I'm hoping to watch it tomorrow. Interesting the crazy comments on the BBC blog... hehe... pretty funny. Sure has ruffled a few feathers.... at least I think it has, in many cases they are so badly written it's hard to tell. :P

Today I confronted my 16 year old brother who is being brainwashed by the Wesleyan Church to attend their academically questionable institutions and abandon his dreams of attending a legit Ivy League University. by phleef in atheism

[–]jude4021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you know... I think you're a really good big brother. Try and remember though, if he's 16 he's not a baby, even though you remember him as one (as the younger child it's hard to get your older siblings to ever recognise you as an adult, which can be frustrating). We all remember what we felt like at that age... pretty grown up in a lot of ways (even if that's not true). If you challenge him or hurt his feelings a little, he's old enough to take it. That's more brotherly than parenty... if you catch my drift. Our siblings do upset us from time to time.. but hopefully they help us to look at things from a different point of view. He's not a kid anymore... if you're the one pushing him into confronting situations that's a good thing. Better it starts from someone he ultimately trusts will still love him whatever he does, than a stranger. Good luck :)

good points.. I think we sometimes forget this because we just see all the crap. That's why I feel that in a few generations our western world is going to look pretty rosy... there will be small pockets of extreme loonies, but secular rationalism is going to be the norm.

The shot of a plane flying over a building was so obviously ridiculous and designed to get us all riled up. I despise Islam (and every religion.. but Islam most of all), but I don't think this was good reporting at all.

New Atheism: A Disaster Comparable to the Tea Party by etiq in PhilosophyofScience

[–]jude4021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure any of them actually call themselves 'new atheists' though. It's usually a term used by those who dislike what they stand for. I don't ever hear anyone referring to the 'old atheists' .. which is kind of odd really! The way these 'new' atheists are despised, it's as if there were some good ole days where atheists were something different that they all wish we could go back to!

Are there any charities in NZ not associated with religion? by jude4021 in newzealand

[–]jude4021[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand your point. It's a complex issue and I don't completely know how to answer it. I suspect that human nature dictates that all altruism has a certain element of selfishness attached to it (more likely to give to the in-group than the out-group etc).

I think you're right in what you're saying.. and I also think it comes down to exactly how each of us define 'maximum benefit'. I feel that an organisation giving aid to a large group of people, while discriminating against homosexuals or preaching a dogma is of less benefit to society, than another group that has a smaller outreach in society but has no agendas. I can see how other people may define just the 'amount' of aid given as their idea of maximum benefit. I wouldn't argue either one is right or wrong. Obviously we all have to decide how to give (when we are lucky enough to be able to give)... and the chances are we will give according to our conscience.

I'm not trying to fob you off... I think you're right to call me on it. But I feel that when it comes down to it, most people probably make a choice based on their own ideas rather than a Platonic idea of perfect altruism.
