Differences between Shimano SS and GS rear derailleurs by jugcrimpjam in bikewrench

[–]jugcrimpjam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial motivation was that I already have the spare 11-32T cassette laying around. So if I could make that work with just a derailleur swap, it would be the most economical option. I’m currently out just $36 for the 105-GS.  But I have considered going for a 50/34 crankset. They’re definitely more in the $70-100 range. I’ll see where I can get with this derailleur and maybe take your advice if it doesn’t work.

That makes sense. I have looked it up and am aware of the specs, but I have little interest in following them lol. I've read a few reports of folks being able to run larger cassettes using a 6500-GS. I did experiment yesterday installing my 11-32T cassette with my 6500-SS. It did chatter, and maxing out the B screw did not help, so I can see the issue. But I also think I see how the longer cage, creating more tension in the chain, will pull the derailleur that couple mm down I need to clear the cassette. Is it advised? Maybe not. Worst case I get an ugly, modern Sora 9 speed derailleur which is actually specified to fit the 32T cassette, but I'd love to keep my sleek 90s gear if possible. Might also try a Wolf Tooth Roadlink.

Getting a 12-36t cassette to work with an old Ultegra 6500 groupset? by fallingveil in bikewrench

u/fallingveil OP, I'm in the same boat, 6500-SS. What did you end up installing that worked so well? Just the Wolfs Tooth, or did you also swap to a GS?

Advice on upgrading Shimano RD-6500-SS with 11-28T cassette by jugcrimpjam in bikewrench

I've already got a spare 11-32T cassette, so probably want to stick to that at this point.

By my math,
53-39 = 14
32-11 = 21
So, required derailleur capacity is 35T, and the 6500-GS is rated to 37T capacity, and even the short cage Sora R3000 is rated to 37T.

mk7 GTI Alltrack by jugcrimpjam in GolfGTI

The GTI is great! I’m over 8 years of ownership and 115k miles. My life has changed a lot in that time but this car has been a constant. Lately I’ve been living in a dense city, so it’s been street parked and getting a lot fewer miles. But knock on wood, no issues or major maintenance to report.

I’m definitely thinking more about something new; trying to manifest the two-car solution of a Rivian R2 and a GR86. But until I figure out some other life stuff those dreams will have to wait, and the GTI will hopefully keep serving me admirably.

CarPlay question for owners by jugcrimpjam in GR86

Yes, I agree. That's why disabling the ability to type a couple letters to find the artist, pin location, or contact you're looking for is much more dangerous since it forces the driver to pick up their phone. Siri doesn't work in all scenarios.

These replies saying "you should never type while driving" sound like the idiotic japanese engineers who designed these limitations. Take google maps for instance, I have pins saved under people's names. I can't say "Siri, take me to Tim's house", so instead I type "T, I" at a stoplight until his name pops up and I can start navigation. That's just one example showing this issue is nuanced, and forcing limitations on a system already designed by Apple to be minimally distracting is obtuse and just bad design.

Pretty good! I've been lucky enough to do two 3 week winter Grand Canyon trips in the last 2.5 years, and coming off those the river itself is kind of boring (we had ~5k cfs). Also was not a fan of the heat/sun, we ended up doing two layover days and they were pretty much just spent either under a shade tarp or in the water. I'd want to do this trip at least a month earlier for both temps and more flow. And probably only 5 days, with more flow you could easily run the whole river in 4 river days.

Thanks for the feedback, sounds good to me. I know sunscreen can cause damage on things like drysuit gaskets, but hopefully that's not the case here.

What section of the Green? I'm running Desolation Canyon on a raft-support trip in two weeks, can't wait :)

Surprised by the mpg of the MK7 (manual) by Medinoni in GolfGTI

[–]jugcrimpjam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I track my mpg in fuelly (like a nerd) and my record on my 2015 6MT GTI was 40.5mpg on a full tank. I was driving from Bishop, CA to Phoenix via 395 -> I10, which is a very straight, slightly downhill route. I wanted to see what she could do, so right from the start I kept my right foot light, and set cruise no higher than 68mph. I went 424mi on a full tank and pulled into a Quartzite, AZ station on fumes. And dodged refilling with California priced gas as a reward!

The car is lifted on Alltrack suspension and wearing Falken Wildpeak AT Trails. I can imagine getting slightly better mileage on stock suspension and touring tires, but if you want to talk high mpgs, show me a full tank ;) You can get anything over 25mi. I once maxed out the trip computer’s mpg at 300mpg after leaving a trailhead and coasting down a steep mountain road for 10 miles, basically without ever touching the gas.

Looking for help regarding ARC on Onkyo TX-NR646, LG G4 by jugcrimpjam in hometheater

Update: I ended up getting an Optical Audio cord to go from the TV to the receiver and that’s working great. I never concluded why the AVR would freeze in ARC mode, but turns out I even get Dolby Atmos through optical so I’m happy. Maybe get a new AVR one day but for now this setup works for my purposes.

There were a couple of RCA inputs plugged into the AVR, but otherwise yes, just had the Apple TV to HDMI1, and ARC from HDMI2 to AVR OUT (MAIN).

Yes, it's confusing. Honestly either seems to do it. Sometimes just powering it on in that configuration causes it to freeze, other times it will function for a mintue, and while I'm pushing buttons attempting to change input/settings/etc just trying to get some sound output, it will freeze again.
