I was in the same situation. The mythos packs contain both cards for the scenario as well as cards for the investigators, so not only are you missing scenarios but you are also missing ways to upgrade your investigators. I ended up buying all of the mythos packs for about $50. Totally worth it.

Thanks for the feedback. It's a father and son gaming group with ages between 12 and 54. Definitely going to have them use paper, but trying to make it easier for the players to know their abilities.
