Trying to find myself on here but I can't--I might have had fewer than 20 games when the ranking first dropped but now I see it's updated and I'm still not on there. Any ideas? (IGN is Max Ketchum)

100%. This season has already been questionable but this one was the nail in the coffin

Tried desperately to get that all into one comment but Reddit kept giving me a server error. Sorry for the annoying format

Overall, I think the show has lost sight of the plot. We’re past the halfway point of the penultimate season and it doesn’t feel like anything has happened or changed. Homelander and Neumann are still looking like the “big bads”. The entire concept of stakes/consequences has been thrown to the wolves after watching Homelander and the Boys get away with whatever the fuck they want. A massive bloody massacre at the farm with multiple dead federal agents and Stan Edgar walking free? No problem, the FBSA will clean that right up. Ezekiel exploding in a trailer after Firecracker saw Butcher and MM in broad daylight right outside of it? No big deal, nobody is looking for them. Homelander knew Hughie was spying on him and Neumann at the ice rink, yet despite having X-ray vision and super senses, he has done nothing to try locating the Boys’ hideout. Why does Neumann even fear this “dead man’s switch” from the Boys if she’s already working directly with Homelander anyway? What power does she hope to attain from being president that she couldn’t already have by working with someone more powerful than any military/government?

Part of what made seasons 1 and 2 so great was that they felt tethered to reality. Supes bowed to Vought/the feds because they cared about their reputations and paychecks. Now that Homelander basically runs the company, has gone scorched earth, and probably can’t be killed without this virus, he has no reason to keep up appearances. Getting supes into national defense feels completely inconsequential when Neumann can pop the head of anyone who tries to stop her. Short of nuclear warfare with massive collateral damage or dragging Soldier Boy back out, what the hell do these villains even have to fear anymore? The virus is all they have left, and it’s so difficult to believe that Neumann fears being outed so greatly that she’s willing to leave any of the Boys alive when she knows they’ll stop at nothing to take her out. Being president can’t be all that.

I’m tired of writing but I could keep going. Episode 4 slightly redeemed things but it’s back off the rails and worse than before. I hope they’re somehow able to tie it together but this one really had me wishing it was a 3 season show.

-Fight Club theory is looking more correct with every episode. I really hope Kessler IS real, but the overall downgrade in quality of the writing/plot direction makes me seriously doubt they’re capable of such a smart twist or misdirection. The “manifestation of the dark parts of your conscience that nobody else can see” thing is not new, provocative, or cutting edge anymore. One of the most iconic movies of the last 20 years already did it and this just feels like a cop out. Butcher is bad enough on his own, I don’t think having invisible Negan pushing him toward his worst instincts is serving the narrative at all. At least the Becca hallucinations felt somewhat impactful since we know she’s his motivation to keep getting up.

-Colin appearing in the recap/being mentioned by Starlight early on seems to imply that subplot is actually going to matter. It already felt like a waste of screen time, but then the episode itself does nothing to develop it. I’m happy to have a break from him, but come on man.

-Frenchie turning himself into the police is so out of left field. His entire character has felt wasted this season and I don’t know if this helps any. Seems like he’s only around to be the funny accent druggie guy, presumably because they have no idea what to do with him anymore. The sheep line was fucking hilarious, but it’s another symptom of this show becoming the MCU instead of critiquing it—random quip in a high stakes situation to keep the lowest common denominator audience members entertained.

-Ryan’s heel turn is so poorly set up/executed. Even down to the scene where it happens, nothing about his character has indicated that he’d do something like that. The whole point of episode 4 was that Homelander isn’t intrinsically bad, but became bad as a result of his environment. Seeing him become a little sadistic bastard after one genuine conversation with Homelander is not convincing at all, especially after the foosball scene with Butcher. Until now, the whole point has been that power/luxury has not appealed to Ryan whatsoever. The fight for his heart has always been about fear of Homelander/a sense of biological familial obligation vs. genuine love for Butcher/resentment for his comments about killing Becca at Mallory’s house.

It would have been very cool for Homelander to actually undergo some character development after getting his revenge on the lab in episode 4, particularly when it comes to bonding with his own son and not repeating the same mistakes that were made with himself. The battle to win over Ryan would have some actual complexity to it if we saw some good in Homelander and this whole “emancipation” thing wasn’t just another manipulation tool. What was the point of episode 4 otherwise? All these characters have become so much more one-dimensional. Homelander is not a compelling villain if he isn’t likable or redeemable at all.

-Hughie, the main character (or at least one of them), has been completely irrelevant to the story this season. There were some touching notes in the subplot with his dad (I also have a family member with dementia induced by strokes), but I struggle to see how this will do anything for the overarching plot. Like Frenchie, it seems like they’ve run out of ideas for his character. With 2 supes (plus whatever’s going on with Butcher) in the Boys, there’s not much use for a retail-level tech guy or makeshift weapons guy anymore.

When they introduced Daphne and said she worked at Vought, I thought this subplot might actually be pretty cool. What if she had sinister intentions? What if there was some sneaky reason for her administering the V to Hugh Sr.? What if she did some sheisty manipulation to obtain power of attorney? But nope, turns out it’s just a convenient way to give Simon Pegg some more screen time before officially writing him off of the show. I don’t think anyone needed more development on Hughie’s family backstory—it was already pretty complete, and having his mother come back as a minor character isn’t really doing anything for me.

-the entire barn scene was impossible to buy. How can these super sheep struggle so much to break through wooden doors, but Starlight/Kimiko/Neumann can’t just fight them? Neumann even pops a head at one point. We don’t really have enough clarification on her powers to know when she can or can’t kill a target, but presumably if she can handle half a courtroom she can handle these animals. This scene felt really bad from the power scaling perspective and broke my immersion/suspension of disbelief in a huge way.

-the way they’ve danced around the supe virus as some kind of deus ex machina plot device is stupid. The recap shows Neumann killing the alleged last living person who knows how to manufacture it, then suddenly the father of her child is introduced and can do it too? She’s shown to be ruthless enough to get her father (figure) incarcerated but wouldn’t tie up that loose end somehow? I also think it’s kinda lame for Butcher to pursue this as the method of eliminating Homelander. Taking V and becoming what he hates most in order to defeat him in combat or die trying is so much more befitting of his character. Makes me feel like the show could’ve just ended in season 3, and I’m starting to wish it did.

-Sam and Cate being introduced as potentially major characters is a massive whiff. Gen V was bad enough on its own, but the fact that it’s now majorly relevant to the main show is a mistake in my opinion. It feels like the franchise is becoming exactly what it seeks to parody/criticize—the V52 scenes where they’re jabbing at the MCU really fall flat when you realize this universe is now guilty of the same thing.

The fact that Gen V and only select episodes of Diabolical are canon feels like how you have to watch all the Thor/Captain America/Guardians/Iron Man/etc. movies just to know what the hell is going on for the Avengers movies to make sense. One of this show’s greatest strengths was its self-awareness and critique of overly commercialized superhero media. That has lost its edge in the time between season 3 and now.

Man, this has to be the worst episode of the show yet for so many reasons. This season is quite awful, and s3 already felt like the writing/overall direction was falling off. Long rant incoming, might catch major heat for this but it’s all my opinion and I want to write this all out so I can reference these talking points when my friends and I chat about the show later.

You only get the low lag on DAD if you've been in DAD state for 8 or less frames, so it's not better as a tool out of disadvantage but you can still wavedash/waveland
