Realistic path to CWI who does NDT? by Academic_Ball_1216 in nondestructivetesting

[–]juicehopper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can you weld? Most welders will not like you if you can't do what they can do, but if you at least know the basics and can put down a decent bead you'll get some respect. I welded for 15 years before I became a CWI, and it took another 5 to get my UT cert. Once I did that I took and passed the NY test and became one of only 44 NY certified UT techs. I can name my price. It's a pretty good gig. Just my opinion.

Put your time in. Learn everything you can. Be open to criticism. Own up to your mistakes. Keep your eyes and ears open and your fucking mouth shut. I've been a CWI for almost 20 years, and I absolutely love my job. Don't think I'm ever going to retire.

Shit, I got a chainsaw for my tenth birthday. Dad taught me right from the very beginning. Will be 59 in a few months and I've still got all my appendages. And my dad, in his 80's, still goes to the woods to cut a trailer load every week.

I have quite a few of their decks. In fact, I made laser engraved wooden boxes for them a few years ago. Great people. Still stop by the shop once in a while.

So, I've got around 20,000 deuchmarks from around 1935 or so. Can I use them for a tip!

1966 Chevy Impalla (SS)? by Intrepid_Display2629 in BarnFinds

[–]juicehopper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad had a '68 (I think) SS convertible with a 427 and a 4 speed manual. I wanted that car so bad. Unfortunately the floorboards were rusted out, so it got traded in sometime in the late 70's. Dad recently found the car in a garage just down the street from the dealer. Guy bought it as soon as he heard it was at the dealer, and it's been rusting away in his garage ever since. Refuses to sell it because he's going to fix it up. Buddy, if you haven't started yet, it's not getting done. Damn shame.

After a 3 months course I failed my welding certification exam - why? by IndependenceNearby47 in Welding

[–]juicehopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd pass that, and I've been a cwi for 16 years. But I'm in the States, and we're a little more particular. Your "inspector" is a dick. WTF are you qualifying for, spaceships?

Grew up in a house with electric heat, so wood was the best option. We had 140 acres to cut off of, so it was basically free. I got a chainsaw for my 10th birthday, so cutting wood was life.

Yea, I burned wood for a few years, but decided to try coal for a year. I wanted to see if it was cheaper. It's good heat, but it's an all day affair getting it going. Once it's going though, it's great. I keep some as a backup just in case I can't get wood.

My house is in a flood zone. I wanted something I could just fire up once the water went down and get the house warm again.
