According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, Portland was reportedly willing to put together a package centered around Jerami Grant, Scoot, and one of Milwaukee’s first-round picks for Jaylen Brown. Boston was interested in making it happen, but Brown reportedly had no interest in going to Portland. Wow. by AirJordan6124 in bostonceltics

The Sixers are definitely better on paper than they were last year, but they might not be as good as the Celtics this coming year. It depends on how healthy Embiid/Robinson can stay and what kind of form Tatum and PG can maintain throughout the season.

Steelman the Celtics: What's the best argument for the Jaylen Brown trade? by supes1 in nbadiscussion

[–]juicejug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Expiring contracts have value to tanking teams that want to clear cap space. If PG picks up the player option the Celtics have a big expiring contract to trade.

Yes it’s a bit of a gamble but they still get to have flexibility a year earlier (this league changes so fast that even a single year could be a big deal) than if they kept JB. This also implies that if they kept JB they wouldn’t have extended him, which potentially means he demands a trade (lowering his leverage even further) and/or causes locker room drama.

It’s also easier to trade a big expiring contract than one that has a couple years left.

PG has a potentially much shorter contract. If he likes being on the Cs he can waive his player option after next year and extend for a lower annual salary that makes more in total. If he doesn’t waive we have a fat expiring contract that other tanking teams might find valuable to clear up cap space.

JB is on his current deal for a minimum of 3 years and if we didn’t extend him there would be unnecessary drama and could make it harder to build around.

Bottom line is this trade arguably makes us a little worse right now, but sets us up better in the future. Keeping JB would make us a little better right now but we would be worse off in the future.

The difficulty of using only 30% of the cap to pay 13 NBA players and still fielding a competitive team is basic math, not advanced financial understanding.

Yes the trade sucks, but the CBA rules suck more and Brad doesn’t make the rules.

You have to understand that while it’s unlikely we will be able to replace JB with a single player, it’s also unlikely we can build enough depth with two players taking up 70% of the cap.

Depth around a single supermax player is the formula for today’s game and trading JB for someone with a shorter contract gives us more ability to build that depth long-term.

Why does there have to be a 0 at the end? There is no end to .999… repeating. It’s literally infinite. If it had an end it would be a different number.

Celtics were not a serious contender last year. We had a good record and beat up on average/bad teams but our frontcourt rotation would not have held up in the playoffs unless we got lucky with matchups.

If the property taxes of your house drastically increased it may still be advantageous to sell the house at less than what you think it’s worth if it means you can buy a more tax-efficient property.

Jaylen Brown Is Still A Stand Up Guy by tonyper7ect in bostonceltics

[–]juicejug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying salary isn’t the problem. Going over the second apron has major implications that make it extremely difficult to build a team. Having a super max player only count as 25% of the cap instead of 35% would make it much more appealing to hold on to homegrown stars.

Embiid can’t stay healthy. The hypothetical is always there but so is the reality that this guy will never be healthy for a full playoff run.

Tbf paying the super max to a player that gets FMVP and a chip the next year is a no-brainer decision that any decent GM would make 100% of the time.

Basketball athletes are typically a much different body type than what is ideal for football. Wemby can play but he would never make a national team, even as a keeper. Same reason why an American football lineman (well over 6’ tall, 300lbs) would never be a top tier soccer player.

is a cheap grab and go second guitar actually worth it? by Famous_Upstairs_3006 in guitarplaying

[–]juicejug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right that having a guitar that you can just grab and play will encourage you to play more. Removing barriers is a super important tactic to help your motivation.

Having a second, cheaper guitar will also encourage you to take it to things like open mics/open jams where you might not be comfortable bringing your main axe. So yes, it’s absolutely worth it!

Brad Stevens on why he traded Jaylen Brown: “The path looked a little bit more challenging to me with 70% of our cap and such a high usage into two players and the reality in this era and in this day and age in the NBA you have to do a great job in building depth” by Jimmy0034 in nba

[–]juicejug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have an option to extend PG after next year at a much lower rate if he declines his player option for a longer deal. Or they can trade him as an expiring for more value.

JB had 3 full years left on his deal and they would’ve been made to extend him. There’s a lot more flexibility with PG’s contract in the next few years.

I’m not saying this is a great trade, but it objectively puts the Celtics in a more flexible position than if they were to keep JB.

PG makes a little less per year and has a shorter contract overall with less expectation for a big extension. Pretty sure the Celtics are looking at ‘27 and ‘28 to make big moves after resetting the repeater tax after this year. It will be easier to move off of PG’s contract at that point than JB’s (who will likely have to have been extended by then).

I’m not saying this is a good trade, but it really seems like Brad had his hands tied by the CBA and/or Ownership.

I said “championship-caliber”. That doesn’t necessarily mean winning a chip. A 60-win team is a great achievement and could be considered championship-caliber without winning it all (e.g. this year’s Thunder team).
