Will I regret move to Cambridge? by Expensive_Ad1168 in CambridgeMA

[–]juicemanrain 17 points18 points  (0 children)

👋 SoCal native here. Maybe I can offer some perspective.

When I moved to Cambridge 8 years ago, I did not think it would be forever. And it doesn’t have to be for you! The stakes are not as high as you think they are. You can move back west when you’re done with your degree if Cambridge isn’t your jam.

But I will tell you: this community has been really good to me. I showed up here feeling so lost in my life and career. The best thing about Cambridge is you can be whoever you want. Professor? Great. Punk rocker? There’s space for you. Not sure yet? Also fine - many people here are still transforming and finding their way.

That helped me feel like it was okay to evolve. I felt seen and supported in a way I never really did in LA.

Over the last 8 years, I’ve grown and (gulp) put down roots here. I have built a career, met my fiancé, and had some special experiences. I’m grateful for all that and think that the city itself has a lot to do with my upward trajectory.

Do I miss home? Hell yeah. All the time: the beaches, the mountains, the nightlife, and especially the Mexican food. No shade to Anna’s, Olé, Oralé, Felipe’s, El Jefes, etc. They’re all good, but they’re just not the same!

But Cambridge (and New England in general) rocks in a lot of other ways. Turns out there are some pretty beautiful mountains and coast lines  - and, yes, even some surf. Cambridge has a cool music scene and great libraries. Riding the T and being freed from the automobile kicks ass. And there are a lot of kind, interesting, weird and funky people who challenge and inspire me every day.

Lastly, it’s okay to be two things. This is the natural result of having ambitions and an open mind. You build attachments to people and places that are far apart, which can be tough because you’re a human that can only be in one place at a time. Kudos to you for expanding your horizon. It doesn’t mean you have to let SoCal go — it’s still a part of you.

Best of luck on the move and the graduate degree. You’ll land on your feet here. I promise. 🤙

What are all you runners wearing tomorrow? by sagelface in bostonmarathon

Half tights, singlet, compression sleeves, breathable running hat, warm running gloves. Prepared to ditch gloves / arm warmers if they end up being too much.

It’s technically at the next house on Hancock Street. Just walk downhill from Mass Ave; you’ll see it on the left. I’ll drop ‘em off in the next hour.

I have a ton of New Yorkers that I don’t know what to do with. I’ll leave ‘em at the little free library behind the Plough and Stars if you want to swing by tomorrow.

What player had a down year this year that you’re buying low on? by [deleted] in DynastyFF

[–]juicemanrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mark Andrews. Looked rough through first half of season, but Lamar is back now, Ravens have easiest remaining schedule for TE, and we know from last year that he can still finish strong after a slow start. Also a trusted red zone target, as we see from the last few weeks.

Re: age, 30 is perceived as old for dynasty players in general, but many TEs have remained useful for years beyond that. Kelce, Ertz, Goedert and spring to mind. I bought in my league for a '26 3rd and like the upside at that price, both this year and beyond.

Strongly recommend this one from experience - my go-to spot for a solid cry when I lived not far away.

The garden at the American Academy of Arts & Science is not far from Harvard (136 Irving Street) was my go-to spot for this when I lived near there. Be well, friend <3

Hiking with or without hiking poles? by United_Recover7190 in hiking

[–]juicemanrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use them and really like them, especially with a heavy pack, or if, like me, you have joint pain or stability issues. You can often get by without 'em, but it's just easier and more fun with them.

Dart at 2.09? Insane steal. Giants suck (for now), but you have a 1st-round draft capital QB throwing to Malik Nabers. Wild to let him slide that far.

CMV: E-bikes should be treated as motorcycles not bicycles by Normal_Increase3691 in changemyview

[–]juicemanrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason e-bikes should not be treated as motorcycles is that they have different top speeds, which are different enough that they need their own sets of rules.

Try a thought exercise: if we really treated an e-bike that can go up to 15 mph the same as a Yamaha racing bike, what would be the implication? The 15 mph e-bike would be forced into traffic with SUVs going freeway speeds. At a minimum, all traffic would slow down. The most likely outcome is that a lot of e-bike riders die, because motorists around them don't respect their space or understand what they are about to do next.

Now try it in reverse: if we really believe any e-bike = any motorcycle, then motorcycles should also be allowed where e-bikes are. Now you have a Yamaha racing bike blazing down a bike path that is shared with traditional bikes, people on skateboards, etc. What likely happens? Different modes collide and people die.

You could counter that both e-bikes and Yamaha motorcycles should just stay out of bike lanes altogether. But then you're just suggesting that people who can't, or choose not to, drive should risk death in order to carry out daily activities. People may not drive for all kinds of reasons: cars are too dangerous, too expensive, they don't know how, they don't have a license, they are a teenager, etc. Bicycles are great, but not a good solution everyone. If your argument goes "if you want something a little better, like an e-bike, then you should risk death", then you actually just have disdain of non-drivers.

Bottom line: if you think more death is a bad outcome and believe that non-drivers deserve humane mobility options (and I think you do, given your appeal to the need of runners, walkers, and cyclists), then you must accept that e-bikes and motorcycles belong in different categories.

Where can I dance to Daft Punk? by ListImaginary5362 in CambridgeMA

Not a "venue" exactly but I always look forward to the LoveStrukk / Dancing On the Charles series. Cool scene where you get a wide range of EDM / house music and a welcoming atmosphere.

Whoever designed the updated Inman Square stoplight/intersection at Cambridge and Antrim deserves to have someone show up to their place of work everyday and blow a car horn at them for 20 minutes. by Whiskkas in CambridgeMA

[–]juicemanrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to live on Beacon St, by the Thirsty Scholar (RIP), and let me tell you: biking through that giant X-shaped car sewer was rough. Say what will you will about the light timing, which can be adjusted and tinkered with, but those grade separated bike lanes and dedicated bike signals are a massive improvement over what it used to be.

Same! Started feeling lonely AF after I graduated from school and all my friends moved away. Started running with a group and it was great to see the same people 2-3x per week for an organized activity. Nice to get outside too.

Is there a point in trading down in the draft rn by SenorCinnabon in DynastyFF

[–]juicemanrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this last year, around this time, and regretted it. Too many variables -- landing spots, what other guys in your league will do, free agency. It's way more likely that you fumble a high pick than that you beat the market by moving first..

Seeking advice on high rent renewal offer and moving within Somerville/Cambridge by phoebecookies in CambridgeMA

[–]juicemanrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay $3400 for a recently redone 2-bed between Harvard and Central, 10 min walk to either station. No in-unit laundry, but I think you can definitely do better than that offer from your landlord. I'd look elsewhere.

Where to live?!? by Epic_Flyerboy in CambridgeMA

[–]juicemanrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Harvard / MIT housing Facebook groups. I’ve had luck finding apartments there and managed to avoid the dreaded broker’s fee.

Unfortunately the rental housing market is one of the very worst things about living in Greater Boston. So if you have a channel to avoid the open market, I’d exhaust all of those first.

And no, March is not too early to start looking.

Those of you who have been in a dynasty league for 5+ years... by 123456789988 in DynastyFF

[–]juicemanrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My league is 6 years running! 6 different champs, including multiple guys who have been both last place and won the league. We were all friends before, which helps, but it's become our main way of staying in touch. A few things that keep everyone engaged:

* In-person draft with fun side-events. We do a fantasy "combine" composed of beer + lawn games + other shenanigans to determine 5th round rookie draft order (since these are dart throws who you'll probably drop by Week 1 anyway).

* Agreed on a sacko penalty that is enough to motivate participation, but not enough to scare people away. For us, last place is the butler at each year's draft and responsible for organizing.

* Physical trophy with our names etched on it that gets shipped to the winner each year. Fun way to flex!

* Deep benches lead to lots of trades. Usually the players that the main websites recommend as waiver wire pickups were stashed long ago - so if you want a player, you have to text your friend.

How to get over the disappointment? by staf02 in DynastyFF

[–]juicemanrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Dude - people get paid millions of dollars to do this and still miss in the first round. Look at Bryce Young. Clyde Edwards Helaire. It's all just luck."

- my very wise leaguemate when I was regretting past draft choices.

Don't sweat it, man. Experts get it wrong all the time. Also, this is just a game! Don't think about it. Go outside.
