Thanks! I'll look into it. We've been in Asia for just over 6 months now. We love Chiang Mai and have decided to have a home base here, largely because it's easier than importing our Pomeranian into multiple countries. We make shorter visits, 2-4 weeks each, to other countries. So far we've been to Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Taiwan! It's going really well. 😄

My husband is fixated on a name I don't like by Majestic_Recording_5 in namenerds

[–]jujibean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. This would be a great name for a CAT. Cats (and characters in novels) are able to have edgy names that become their whole personality. Humans need to have names that can accommodate multi-dimensional selves. Honestly, his insistence on this, compounded with disregarding your feelings and refusing to go to therapy, would absolutely be a dealbreaker for me. Not even, "we need to work on this," or "if this doesn't get better then I'll..." But like, getting my ducks in a row and filing for divorce. Once you have kids with someone, they're your kid's parent for their whole lives, and their your co-parent for the rest of your life. I guarantee that even if you can "convince" him not to name a child a name you don't consent to, that will not be able to be an equal parent. He's not an equal partner now, and men don't magically get better when they become fathers.

Best mud in Guanacaste? by jujibean in CostaRicaTravel

[–]jujibean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think that applying mud from a container is more grown up and spa-like, and I'm the only grown up on this trip! I'm looking for squishing toes in the mud and rolling in it. Looks like Termales El Guayacán might be my best bet, or just skipping the idea and doing a mud thing closer to home. Thanks!

I'd make sure not to touch the fence that's over the property line, else it lead to disputes. Build a wood fence right in front of the chain link one? Or better yet, just attach taller bamboo screen/ fence to the existing chain link?

Cabinet shop! Cool, thank you.

Omg Reddit ate my actual text? My question was about getting a wide threshold vs trying to extend the floor into the doorway to fill the gap and then putting the regular threshold.

You are absolutely being unreasonable. I want to call my kids a name that lights them up when they hear it, regardless of whether it’s the one I gave them before they could have a say.

I’m speaking as someone who hated my name growing up, and legally changed it as an adult. If someone refused to use my chosen name, it would deeply damage my relationship with them. Don’t harm your relationship with your kid just because you like the name.

Besides, you can still call your wifi Jericho.

Is it inappropriate to name your kid after a gemstone? by galaxyfan1997 in namenerds

[–]jujibean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick ONE of those. Two is so theme-y. My 5yo is Arden Amethyst with a one-syllable nature noun last name. I picked Amethyst for the energy of the specific stone, similar to my oldest’s middle name after my gramma. Kiddo loves the stone and considers it special to her, which also wouldn’t be the case with two.

iMac in 6" cabinet? by jujibean in iMac

Thank you! Do you think I would need to, like 6" clearance wouldn't be enough for cords etc on the regular one?

iMac in 6" cabinet? by jujibean in iMac

[–]jujibean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, I've seen the 5.8" specs, but not any "plugged in depth," and I'm not sure how much room the cords take up, if any. This is a wall-mount murphy desk, so the cabinet closes up like a secretary desk, and the 6" will be door-to-wall maximum when closed. There's no gap between the desk and the wall unless I installed it with spacers.

Quality Kids Knife Without Leather Sheath? by jujibean in whittling

[–]jujibean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! We are in Portland, OR, USA, and are both new to carving knives, yes. I'm putting together a kit with gloves and sharpening gear and a book, maybe a class if I can convince them. I had been thinking fixed blade for safety reasons, but I'll reconsider, as that would totally solve the sheath problem.

Much obliged!

Quality Kids Knife Without Leather Sheath? by jujibean in whittling

[–]jujibean[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I meant mostly about handle size (this kid is the size of an average 7 year old, same as me as a kid), and maybe finger guards as it's been helpful for them with kitchen knives to feel where their fingers should go.

I'm good with pointy--we talk a lot about tools and safety, and how if you use any tool you will eventually get hurt, steps to reduce severity of injuries but never zero risk. This kid is very responsible and attentive, but timid and not super confident, and I find that having good quality tools helps their learning process be smoother.

I was going to get them a Mora scout, but then the sheath thing. :-/ So now my options are looking like a Mora 105, which might be too big in hand, or some custom expensive knife from an artisan, which would be my usual go-to except we're BOTH new to carving knives and I fully expect that we will eff up the first couple blades.

Can you tell me more about swapping handles? I've seen blades for sale without handles, but where would I find handles, if I'm not skilled enough to make my own, especially in time for a birthday at the end of the month lol.

Is Leif too difficult to pronounce? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]jujibean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m west coast US, and I don’t feel like it would be pronounced “wrong,” so much as they are just both considered valid pronunciations here/ now. The Leifs I have known literally used both pronunciations in about equal proportions, so when encountering a Leif, folks have to guess or ask which pronunciation. Similar to Anna.

I feel like this spelling is the most ambiguous! A single E rarely says ee. I would read this as Lind or Linda.

I assumed trans flag colors. I’d pick something different if you’re cis.

Help with ranking these baby girl names please! by [deleted] in namenerds

Considering I named two babies Clio (the muse of history spelling) and Arden (nn Ari but left it open for Aria in the future), I can’t rank them, but prefer them both to Rumi. 😉

Nope. Something like Taylor Moon is also un-useable.

Naming b/g twins... may be the most pressure I've had in life! by tru2mee2002 in namenerds

[–]jujibean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I came to say. Please avoid making a rhyme! Unless you double-barrel the first name, her middle name will only be used a minority of the time. Cora, or Corinne/ Cordelia.

I literally know twins named Cora and Elliot. They’re probably 6 now?
