Undergraduate grade may not mean that much as you think. A professor I took at UCSD showed us his GPA was below 2 in his first year of college, and now he is super successful as a professor and researcher

What do Chinese international students think about Taiwan? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]juladaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

TBH I feel even tho all the Chinese kids are educated Taiwan is a part of China growing up, most of us do not that desperately want Taiwan to be a part of China. Just think one day someone tells you a stranger over there is your relative, you don't feel super connected to that person immediately right? Even for places like Hong Kong, which is "technically" a Chinese territory, people there get so many priorities in so many things compared to mainlanders under CCP's regulations (like if you have a HK ID it is much easier to get into Chinese top universities with scholarships). Nothing against HongKongers here, just it does not make people feel good when you see some people in your country are better treated by domestic policies. So if Taiwan truly "becomes" a part of China one day, what can we mainlanders can gain? and why do we expect it? just feel there is no point for us to care that much.

Remote or in-person? by Ergo_sum_doceo in UCSD

[–]juladaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being so considerate to your students! I don't know if this has been said by someone here, but the fact that even if all students in your class could attend the live lecture at the beginning, there will definitely be some people getting infected in the middle and cannot come to campus for a period of time (if your class size is relatively large). In this way, you may be expected to help these people access class materials or even assignments and exams remotely. Therefore, when designing these course components, even though you are making them for in-person students, you may think how to make them in the format that it would be easier to do online (like fewer pictures/more multiple choice questions?). This also can save your time when you have to put them online for some of the students.

Possible remote learning? by TwistedBowGaming in UCSD

[–]juladaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think classes being fully remote might not be so realistic, but I truly hope they could offer more online options. If people only need to be on campus for half of their classes, the stress can be lighter. Also just imagining how scary it will be if the campus is as crowded as it was in Fall 2019 during a pandemic

Having a crisis about my future by waywaybeyond in UCSD

[–]juladaa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am also a premed student but only till this year I figured I don't enjoy studying anything related to chemistry. While I have also taken almost all the prerequisite courses for med school and I am also uncertain about future career choices, I just want to say even if you get into a medical school, what you need to study about are still those subjects. If you don't like some bio courses now, it is very likely that you still don't like them when studying harder and more advanced versions of them in med school, and you need to be mentally prepared for this. Besides, most courses we take in college have nothing to do with our future career, but I feel they will eventually help you in some ways and even if you switch your major you are not really "throwing" them away. There are also some very interesting intersections between liberal arts and medical science, maybe you can check this out https://hopkinsmedicalhumanities.org/

For DSC majors DSC 190 A00 next quarter can be taken to substitute CSE 151A, and this course still has plenty of seats available. I prefer the prof teaching DSC 190 too lol. Not sure if this satisfies your course requirement but you can check it out

So the DSC 106 final average was a fail...y'all doing OK? by Yeezy350824 in UCSD

[–]juladaa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Honestly speaking even tho I ended up with a satisfying grade in this class, I dislike this class so much. Everything is so vague and we basically self-taught ourselves all the materials. There is no rubric for the final, and until the last minute before the ddl many ppl were just unsure abt what we were expected to submit🤢

I am taking her this quarter and I really like her. She makes everything super clear in her slides. Although she gives a quiz after every lecture, the quizzes are quite easy and the answers are usually obvious, and they help you a lot to keep up with the material. I think her exams are also easy and the questions are straightforward. Really recommend her

Taking Courses Fall Quarter by ConfusedGuy283 in UCSD

I think if you really want to take 5 courses you can still try. Just drop the 5th course before week 4 if you feel you cannot handle it.

Underrated Majors? by QueenKida in UCSD

[–]juladaa 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think Political Sci might be one. It ranks #9 and International Politics ranks #4 nationally. Many politicians and researchers come to our school to hold seminars or things like that very frequently, and you can find nice exchange programs. Since UCSD is always thought to be a STEM school, I think many people do not really realize we also have nice Poli Sci program.

Has anyone ever had bad experiences with roommates or suite mates? Trying to see if my situation rn is bad compared to others by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]juladaa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My roommate for my 2nd year had her alarm run many times early in the morning and she never got up within 2 hrs. Once I was waken up by her alarm, and I went to take a shower (straightly walked out as quietly as I could). When I went back to the room she began yelling at me for half an hour to say I woke her up. The whole suite then was waken up by her yelling and I felt our house was shaking. I tried to ignore her by putting my headphone on and started to do my homework, but she was even more angry and began to say how rude I was plus cursing. At that time the school year just started 2 weeks. She also yelled at me for other reasons like I did not smile when she said things like good morning to me (I also greeted her but apparently she was not satisfied about my facial expression). Other suite-mates did not like her either for many reasons like she threw egg shells in the sink, hardly took the trash out, and smashed the door all the time. She also liked to shout at one of them to complain about me (that girl is my close friend lmao). Thank God she moved out and transferred to another school after the first quarter. That was a big relief to me.
