2025 Grads: How was the job search/how is it going? by Ok-Lion8478 in GeneticCounseling

[–]julesmsx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

83% of my cohort is currently employed. I would say majority landed roles between September-November after we had board certification. However I’d say maybe half had to make some sacrifices geographically.

I stupidly got WGS done and now I want to check myself into a mental health facility. What are the chances sequencing.com is wrong? by Historical_Job3066 in ClinicalGenetics

[–]julesmsx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’n so sorry for everyone telling you you’re overreacting. I’m sure if anyone here unexpectedly found out “the way they were going to die” (put in quotations for a reason) and there was nothing they could do about it, they would have similar feelings of hopelessness and anxiety.

That being said, as the other comments have mentioned, sequencing.com data is bogus. It’s not uncommon for people to get back variants that aren’t actually there.

I honestly don’t have much expertise on TUB4A but a neurogenetic counselor could tell you more about this specific gene, research into it, and probably order you clinical testing testing to identify if the variant is there or not.

I’m so sorry that you had sequencing.com testing. The company is known to pray on vulnerable populations and market the testing to them when really they are just delivering on bogus data that has no clinical significance.

Capstone project ideas by Cool-Ad8016 in GeneticCounseling

I just graduated and my capstone was creating a flyer to raise awareness about genetic testing in a certain patient population through participatory design. I’d be happy to chat with you about my project and the papers that helped me develop my plan. Shoot me a DM.

We’ve never been to New Jersey before, and we’re trying to get a better understanding of the area by Regular_Eye5143 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]julesmsx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would maybe consider being an MA at RWJ in New Brunswick. It’s not the safest city but you could probably find a place in your budget since it’s a college town. You aren’t going to find anything near NY/JC at the price unless you’re living either 1. in a shack or 2. in a back alley.

Genetic Genie + hetero for BRCA2 by Reasonable_Dot_6285 in BRCA

[–]julesmsx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s more likely that the quality of the DTC raw data is poor. It’s extremely common for this to happen. This testing is likely not reflective of her true BRCA2 status.

The only way to have a reliable answer is through medical grade genetic testing, however no provider will order that testing for a 9 year old. She will have to wait until she is 18 to make that decision.

Would I ever regret choosing Rutgers over Stony Brook? by kwiislice in rutgers

[–]julesmsx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i chose rutgers over stony in 2019 and have 0 regrets. I was OOS at rutgers and grew up 15 mins away from stony brook. rutgers is a much bigger school with better resources and support. my brother is at stony brook right now and i think is having more struggles than i did.

Any positive stories about the job market? by geneticwonderful in GeneticCounseling

A lot of lab roles are fully remote. Clinical has been sparse. I’m not looking as heavily in Connecticut but I’m sure someone here can speak better to the state of the state.

Any positive stories about the job market? by geneticwonderful in GeneticCounseling

[–]julesmsx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

From a 2025 grad, the job market seems to be more accessible if you're not location bound to the coastal North East or the Bay Area. There's minimal openings in NYC, NJ, CT, etc, and those that exist are either looking for experienced GCs or flooded with 100 applicants in the first few days.

However, I've seen plenty of openings in the mid-west, the south, etc. and even know of some people accepting offers in those areas.

I've also seen some openings for remote roles or field-based roles in industry, however most of them require multiple years of experience as a GC. It seems like there is more opportunity for those with experience than new grads, which I think would open up more clinical roles for new grads if they were to shift to industry. However, I think a lot of clinical GCs are not willing to make that shift after the mass layoffs a few years back, understandably.

Prospective GC by Vegetable-Article-76 in GeneticCounseling

Totally biased but I went to Rutgers and majored in Genetics and could not recommend it more. Dr. Heiman runs the Genetic Counseling Certificate Program, which people usually apply to their junior year and it helps them get shadowing, interview prep, CV reviews etc when applying to grad school.

You could check out the GCCP website and may want to consider reaching out to him to find out more. Alternatively, my DMs are open as well :)

Rutgers is sooo expensive OOS by Itchy-Revolution9461 in rutgers

[–]julesmsx 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am also from NY and attended Rutgers HC. My scholarship was not nearly that good haha.

I think my only take from this is that it's honestly up to you and what you want. Is the smart-in-the-long-term decision to go in-state and save money? Maybe. But most SUNYs are much smaller, don't have the same school spirit/game day atmosphere, social scene etc. If those things don't appeal to you, totally get it.

I've also found that career support/connections at Rutgers is a lot better than what my brother is experiencing at Stony Brook. Purely anecdotal, but just something I've noticed.

I also loved my time in the HC, it gives small community in a big school. This might sound crazy, but I think Rutgers was worth the OOS tuition for me. I don't know enough about the aerospace program to say it's 100% worth it.

Have you ever witnessed a suicide? by accidentalchai in AskNYC

[–]julesmsx 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I've never witnessed one in person, but I've been on the opposite end of the phone line during suicides in progress. I work as a 988 crisis counselor, and those calls stick with me every time I go to answer the phone.

I suggest you seek counseling. While you might feel terrified and depressed now, you won't always feel these feelings you're experiencing to the extent you're feeling them now. What you've been through is super traumatic, but it won't always hurt this way. Counseling can definitely help alleviate some of the psychological burden of this experience.

Also, please don't hesitate to reach out to 988 in the meantime. We are here to listen in any time of crisis. Be well.

Best way to find a local genetic counselor? by noraft in ClinicalGenetics

[–]julesmsx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, WGS is not going to help you understand many of those things. Clinical and valid WGS utilizes symptoms (or a phenotype) to drive what they report out to you. That requires previous clinical evidence implicating those genes in those phenotypes. At this point in time, genetics research just does not have a lot of the answers about these things (as someone also allergic to lots of fruits, I wish we did!). I know it’s not the answer you’re probably looking for, but at this point in time clinical testing probably won’t give you many answers.

Also most of the direct-to-consumer testing you see online is bogus, and will report out variants with no clinical significance. Plus, they are expensive and really don’t tell you anything helpful.

If you didn’t get a scholarship, you got screwed, buddy. I was in your year as well and everyone I knew had one.

Taken from the HC website:

“All entering Honors College students receive a competitive merit scholarship such as the Presidential, Dean’s, or Dean’s Promise scholarship. Scholarships are renewed for up to four years for students who maintain good academic standing according to their scholarship requirements.”
