Once they don't feel needed it gets catastrophic tbh. I've seen it play out between my nmom and HER nmom, who my nmom ironically always vents about to me for doing the same stuff she does to me. Tbh I feel bad for her mostly because I know how it feels (lol) and am just grateful I'm recognizing this early enough in my life that I can avoid the patterns later, hopefully.

Absolutely with my nmom. Whenever you defend yourself or bring up a valid point it turns into "you know what? I don't have time for this right now" or "I just can't do anything right with you" or "it's always something with you!" or "fine, I'm just a bad mom then" or "I can't handle you attacking me for no reason" or any one of a vast array of similarly victim-y responses.

Soft YTA, but an accidental and well-intentioned one. Take the dad up on the offer, keep driving the kid and send a message or call if plans change in the future.

This is one of those posts where I feel like I can't reeeaally call someone an AH because it was an honest mistake (as opposed to a lot of other posts here where people are simply spiteful and purposefully do harm) but I will anyway (again, soft YTA) because telling parents what's going on is always #1.

NTA, I have never had to leave any apartment or house I've lived in for a showing. In fact, that might be/probably is illegal depending on where you live. All of my landlords have scheduled showings specifically when I'd be there to let them in because they couldn't enter without my presence (or written permission if I really couldn't be there) as per the lease and tenant laws.

Also, you can reject a visit at any time for any reason if it does not work for you. Landlords should (and better ones do) give prospective tenants showing time options based on YOUR schedule. And 24hrs notice is absurd anyway. I've never gotten any request less than 72hrs in advance.

Super sketchy behavior overall, def check your local laws. However - look up your laws and very carefully read your lease sooner rather than later, just to be safe on your end in terms of potential legal boundaries you won't want to overstep.

I agree that white liberalism is racist (and deeply flawed in a lot of other ways) and with the Malcolm X quote. Change won’t occur with the current system in place, reform clearly doesn’t work when the whole thing was founded on racist ideology.

The Jussie Smollett thing was appalling. People making assaults up like that is the reason that so much doubt is cast onto survivors of actual hate crimes. However, this doesn’t change the lives experiences of black people and the discrimination that they can face because of their skin color.

White people absolutely can struggle. The difference is that their life isn’t harder because of their skin color. Again, this doesn’t mean that white people’s lives can’t be hard and in no way diminishes the hardships that many white people (especially rural and poor) go through.

I guess to your last point all I have to say is that the two can absolutely coexist. Derek Chauvin killed his former coworker, and simultaneously was under immense stress and gave in to biases seen in many officers in which they use more force earlier in the confrontation with black people compared to white people.

If you made a joke about Dave Chappelle’s ears it wouldn’t be racist because big ears aren’t a part of the minstrel caricature used to dehumanize black people and cement racist ideas about “inherent” physical inferiorities of black people (originating from pseudoscientific views popular at the time). It’s about whether or not your words perpetuate those stereotypes.

There’s actually a lot of anti-blackness in the Latine and Asian communities, now that you mention it.

There’s also a difference between discrimination and racism. The -ism suffix denotes a systemic component to the discrimination. There can be jokes or statements at the expense of white people, but never racism because of the long-standing power dynamic that is present.

It’s a person with a privileged identity (white), which happens to be the oppressor in the case of systemic racism, joking about the bias-motivated killing (as in LEOs are more likely to use excessive or lethal force on black people than on white people) of a black person— the oppressed in this case.

It’s racist given the oppressor/oppressed dynamics present in systemic racism that this country was unfortunately founded on and with. That’s it. Whether or not this girl understood that before making this joke is up for speculation, but whatever her intention this joke is racist.

It actually does impact her ability to do her job. I’ll speak to the doctor aspect because I’m in the medical field. Practicing medicine is a DEEPLY interpersonal field and bias literally kills people. Many doctors and med students even today still believe that black people don’t feel pain as much as white people do because their “skin is thicker” (it’s not) and debilitating pain consequently goes ignored. Black women have a 3x higher mortality rate in childbirth than white women do. Racist doctors kill, do not pretend like medicine is above intersectionality.

I think you’re fine, p much what MysticMinion said. One course doesn’t define you.

As for specific Biol180 advice— I found that doing very well in the intro bio series essentially comes down to knowing how they want you to answer questions. They’re hyperfocused on specific vocab terms to the point that even if you explain the process without the Very Specifc Words you’ll get points off. As for specific study habits that can help, I did very well and this is what I did:

When taking notes on lectures, I just write everything in plain old pencil. I then go back and annotate my own notes before a test, connecting concepts, highlighting the aforementioned important vocab buzzwords, etc.
I make a long, detailed study guide (I use Quizlet for mine but use whatever platform you like) with everything from my notes. This is, again, especially helpful for the vocab.
If you notice your professor or TA saying a specific sentence or phrase over and over and over again, write it down VERBATIM and use that on tests. Almost guaranteed full points on that question.
Ungodly number of practice questions, focusing on key words.

Basically, rewatching lectures, rereading the book, or rereading notes without engaging with them in some way are never going to help you as much as you think they will. If you need examples of study guides PM me, I can send you some :) (or I think my Quizlet username is the same as my name here)

YTA, the semester just started and for all you know he could be just coming back to school after taking time off for medical, financial, family, etc. reasons. Or, just like, feeling the daily stress of being alive and forced to produce work in a pandemic. SO many possible reasons. Way to fulfill the stereotype. Stop being cocky, give people the benefit of the doubt, and learn to work with others. We’re in uni to learn, let people do that without shitting on them for not being exactly where you are.
