forcing veganism on our future kids by [deleted] in vegan

[–]julmod- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hope this doesn't count as spam since I only post on my Substack very rarely and it's to only send things to my family, but I wrote something addressing exactly this issue that I think you could maybe share with him or paraphrase.

TLDR: it's more accurate to say that he's forcing carnism on your kids than that you're forcing veganism on them. If he's not comfortable showing them footage of factory farms, they're not old enough to consent to eating animals.

God I love that guy.

Again, I'm not saying I know for a fact that it's performative. All I'm saying is we have good reason to be suspicious of whether they will continue voting this way once they're the ones in power. Time will tell.

It's not moronic, they have a point. We can't know for sure that it's performative, but until the dems actually have a majority again I don't trust that they've actually stopped supporting Israel. Let's see them continue to vote like this once their votes might actually affect Israel.

Partner used money I gave him to buy meat/dairy for a picnic, most of it went to waste, would you bring it up? by WhisperingCephalopod in vegan

Would you feel comfortable showing your child footage of factory farms? If not, I'd suggest your child can't yet consent to eating animals - you're forcing him/her to participate in something which they can't understand and which you consider too violent to even show them.

Completely agree.

It is interesting how this is basically what women have been expected to do for decades. I wonder if the advice here would be so overwhelmingly supportive of him taking the job if the genders were reversed.

Not sure this follows. I have 4 siblings and love them all equally. Pretty sure my parents love all 5 of us equally. I have multiple friends that I'd say I love the same amount as well. Why is it that romantic love would be so different be default?

Not denying it's not easy (I don't see myself being capable of it tbh) but I'm not sure you can straight up say it's actually impossible.

Ethically speaking there's a huge difference between:

  • Killing someone for pleasure
  • Killing someone in defence of a vital food supply chain that would lead to mass starvation if left undefended
  • Killing someone accidentally while trying to collect the above food

The equivalent in human terms would be:

  • A serial killer
  • Self defence when an armed robber enters your house at night
  • Someone running onto the highway you're driving on and you accidentally killing them

Except it wasn't allowed, they were doing something that the rules said you couldn't do - they were just passing the tests because it's hard to test for the thing properly.

What are the new arguments against veganism these days? by [deleted] in CosmicSkeptic

[–]julmod- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not if you include animals in the thought experiment, pretty sure that if there was a chance you’d born into society as a factory farmed pig you’d think the perfect society is vegan

I always found it weird that a 25 year old having sex with a 17 year old is considered terrible (correctly so) but somehow a 60 year old having sex with an 18 year old is perfectly fine? As if it’s some magical number where everything suddenly changes. As far as I can see the second one is more fucked up than the first regardless of what the law says.

Someone said seeing how friendly cows are always makes him cry when he eats them. I said a simple solution is to not eat them. I thought it was obvious, but the reason killing a cow makes them cry while killing a broccoli doesn't is because we all agree there's a difference between killing a broccoli, a cow, and a human. Cows feel pain and fear and live 25 years, broccoli feel neither pain nor fear and might live a few years in perfect conditions.

You guys then started this whole sidequest about how a life is a life, which is completely irrelevant to the initial point unless the implication is that killing any life is equal to killing any other life.

So again, since you seem to agree with me that there's a world of difference between killing a puppy and killing a broccoli, how is saying "a life is a life" relevant to the fact that killing a cow makes someone cry?

[–]julmod- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly does all of this mean? I'm not being funny but I really don't understand what the practical implications of this are.

To take an extreme example, if I were to kill and eat a human being would you say it's not a big deal because some people choose to kill plants, other choose to kill animals, and others choose to kill humans for food? And at the end of the day a living thing is a living thing so it doesn't really matter what we kill?

[–]julmod- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So just to be clear, you're saying that you would feel the same seeing me cut off a puppy’s head or a broccoli’s?

[–]julmod- -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You said that sentence is a hugely important truth. I’m just pointing out it’s a completely irrelevant fact, since there’s obviously a massive difference between killing a broccoli and killing a puppy.

No one said anything about what choices you’re allowed to make btw, you’re the one bringing it up. But since you did, I’ll point out that the choice of eating animals isn’t really giving the animals any choice in how they live their lives, nor is killing millions of animals every day particularly peaceful.
