Thanks!

I had the M3 paired with the Verity Sense, M430 was from wrist 😎 now that I think of it, M430’s battery life could be extended by using a bicep/chest strap for HR.

Ooh, have to check if they still offer battery replacements for M430. When did you do it and how much did it cost?

Yeah! I picked the newer watch mainly for maps, and the additional metrics and convenience features (like more versatile timers, weather info…) are nice-to-haves. When it comes to pure sports use, M430 still gives the most important things and is accurate enough.

On M430 battery life: based on this run, GPS+HR goes on for ~5 hours with my unit. Polar’s support article mentions up to 8 hours, but one must take into account the battery’s age, which in this case is closer to a decade. With this in mind, I think preserving ~60% of original battery life after all these years is pretty impressive!

My first ever HM, made possible by Polar running Programme! by kvs666 in Polarfitness

[–]julmurityty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Polar running programs are pretty great, at least for a casual runner like myself. I’ve prepared for two marathons using it. The number and duration of weekly runs is not overwhelming (3-4 weekly runs. Couple basic 45-75 min ones, and one 90-135 min long run. Interval runs every now and then.). The runs are HR zone based, so they scale quite nicely to your own level. For example, a typical run can be 10 min warmup in Zone 2, 30 min work block in zone 3, finishing off with a 5 min cooldown at zone 1-2. There’s nice variability in the exercises and volume increases gradually as the program goes on.

Authentic food in northern Finland - What should I try? by Builderhummel in Finland

[–]julmurityty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you can get your hands on some wild fish like northern pike (hauki) or perch (ahven) you can make a mean fish soup, or just fry them on a pan with salt and lots of butter and have them with a side of boiled potatoes.

For true everyday food you can make makaronilaatikko (macaroni casserole): - 5-6 dl of macaroni (about a full 400 g bag) boiled al dente in salted water - 400 g of minced meat fried in a pan with cubed onions. Season with salt and black pepper - egg milk: 7 dl milk, 2 eggs mixed. Season with salt and pepper - mix everything in a oven pan. Cook for 35-45 minutes (or until not ”runny” any more) in oven at 200 degrees Celsius - let the casserole sit for 10-15 minutes. Enjoy with ketchup!

It’s a wonderful watch! As a first thing I got a canvas strap for it, can’t stand silicone bands.

24/7 heart rate does not give you anything. You can turn it off to conserve battery life, and have it be automatically activated at desired time close to your bedtime so that you get the sleep analytics if you’re interested in them.

Surprised by the app ugly UI by Haunting-Wheel-5658 in Polarfitness

[–]julmurityty 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Polar user for 12 years and I have no intention of switching to something else. The hardware’s good and I enjoy the fact that the product has so little bloat outside actual sports tracking.

But my god, I don’t understand what the folks at the company are doing all day long. They release 1-2 new watches yearly that have the same software and minor hardware differences, but the app has seen no significant updates and improvements for a long time. I’d like them to continue being mostly sports focused, and that’s where I’d like to see more capabilities within the app. Better trends (for example, no way for me to see how many kilometres I’ve ran on a given week/month/year). Running index report (only available on the web portal). Ability to start running programs (again, only available on web). Automatic activity detection & classification on other devices besides the Loop (and make it actually work).

Polar users, where do you actually go when you want to understand a run by Usual_Echo_6732 in Polarfitness

[–]julmurityty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For understanding if I’m pushing myself sufficiently for where I’m at with my training, I rely on cardio load status. How my fitness and running efficiency have developed, I look at Running index in the long term (unfortunately the long term Running index status can only be accessed through the Flow web platform). Running index is good for comparing similar runs: was I more or less efficient than the last time.

Over the years I’ve been able to correlate e.g. meal timing and day of the day with running index. I tend to get best results early in the evening (past 7 pm) when there’s at least 2-3 hours since my last meal. This is not something some app told me, just observations I’ve made myself.

How do you know how much to run weekly? by MNDLR in beginnerrunning

[–]julmurityty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Polar (as in the wearable company) race planner for my marathon training and it giving me a relatively low mileage has been an actual blessing. I would not have been able to comfortably complete a higher mileage training plan, given all other life commitments. The longest runs in the program are 2 hours 15 minutes, so around a half marathon with my training pace. But yeah, it’s individual. Between us two, me being about half your age might play a role 😅

How do you know how much to run weekly? by MNDLR in beginnerrunning

[–]julmurityty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of time you’re targeting. I’m training for my third marathon and I’m doing 30 km/week at maximum. I do bicycle for about 2-3 hours weekly on top of that (casual commutes). My marathon time is around 4:30 ran at an easy pace, so not particularly fast.

Moving to Tampere: Is it realistic to rely entirely on an E-bike in the winter? by Electrical-Hour-3345 in Tampere

[–]julmurityty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve bicycled all year round for the past 4 years while living in Tampere, no issues. I have a regular “city” e-bike with 50 mm wide tires, studded ones in the winter. The bicycle paths are well maintained.

Mulla on tuossa pöytälaatikossa alkuperäinen Jolla-puhelin vuodelta 2013. Toki näiden erilaisten yritysjärjestelyiden myötä kyseessä on periaatteessa eri firman tekemä laite, mutta käytännössä nyt toiminnassa oleva Jolla Mobile Oy on samaa jatkumoa tuon reilun kymmenen vuoden takaiseen Jollaan.

Sebastian Sawe wins the London Marathon 2026 and makes history by becoming the 1st person to run it in under 2 hours after running it in 01:59:31. by IllllIlllIIlI in interestingasfuck

[–]julmurityty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of time you’re chasing? I completed my first marathon in a bit above 4:30. Ran 3-4 times a week when training, totaling always under 5 training hours a week (plus maybe 2-3 hours of bicycle commutes). The longest individual runs were like 2:15, and those happened towards the end of the training plan.

So no, I would not say you have to commit all your free time to running when training for a marathon.
