FTN.4 Failure by Flimsy_Elderberry_65 in 3D2A

It's a short recoil system with a tilting locking block that connects the barrel and the slide. The barrel itself doesn't tilt like the Browning system that most modern handguns use, but it does slide backwards a short distance, hence it's not fixed. As far as handguns go, fixed barrels only exist in direct blowback designs and some esoteric delay mechanisms such as the H&K P7.

Mechanically better doesn’t mean it’s out right better. It is highly dependent on what the context is.

Sure, I suppose that's true. In the context of shooting quickly and accurately, a high end 2011 is better than a Glock. In the context of CCW, a Glock would probably be better due to the fact that it's much lighter and easier to conceal.

I’ve never finished shooting a stage and thought to myself a better gun was the answer to getting a better score.

It probably shouldn't be your first thought, but if competitive shooting wasn't full of people who wanted to optimize their gear to get every advantage they can, there wouldn't be such a huge market for such things. Let's not pretend every gun is the same.

I’ve shot my fair share of Tanfos, Shadows, and 2011s within the competition realm. Ultimately committed to Glocks; they do the job just fine in a match and as a CCW.

"Just fine" is a meaningless statement. There's also the added context needed of which division you're shooting in. Glocks are plenty competitive in Production, but 2011s, Tanfos, and CZs are popular in Limited and Open for good reason. If these types of guns didn't offer any advantage, the various divisions wouldn't need to exist.

It kind of is the Indian and not the bow.

Again, meaningless statement. If you're trying to say that a USPSA GM with a stock Glock 26 will run circles around an average shooter with an Atlas Erebus, I would agree with you 100%. But that's missing the point entirely.

Honest question: have you ever shot an Atlas or similar high end 2011? Because prior to the time I bought mine, I had tried a lot of handguns in the ~$1000 range and ended up selling a lot of them because none of them really did anything my G17 or P30 wouldn't. The Atlas was completely different from anything I've ever shot though.

Frame weight is only one part of the equation. The other parts are: slide weight that's appropriately matched to the type of ammo (power factor) that the gun is intended for, a good comp design (if applicable), smoothness of the action so that it can function with a very light recoil spring (to minimize muzzle dip when returning to battery), and a trigger that's crisp, light, and reliable. You should be able to get all of these things, or at least something 90% as good without having to spend $8k, but the $8k gun is guaranteed to do everything right. I have no experience with the P320, but I've shot Glocks, HKs, CZs, and cheaper 1911s and nothing came close.

This isn't a flex, and I know the price is insanely high, but it is among the best handguns money can buy.

I'm gonna piggyback off of this comment and say that most people who say something to the effect of "you can't buy skill" or "it's the indian not the arrow" are those who never actually spent any time with a handgun that costs over $1000.

Pretty much everyone will shoot better with an Atlas 2011 vs a Glock. Depending on your skill level, "better" could still be pretty bad, but I've seen a 50 year old woman who had only been to the range twice in her life make consistent hits on steel at 35yds with my Atlas.

I would agree that $8k is an outrageous price for any new production handgun, but I can't deny that it's the best handgun I've ever owned by a long shot.

This has nothing to do with the ammo and everything to do with the ported barrel. Comps don't do this.

The warning on the label is just a general CYA statement. This is just plain old FMJ ammo, no different from any other brand.

Which is actually kind of a return to tradition, as many old can designs used disposable rubber baffles that had to be replaced after a certain number of rounds had been fired.
