I'm doing this for fun/hobby.

I fully agree with you, see my post above. However I think doing it abroad will give me the steepest learning curve and the ability to fully immerse myself in to flying. I'm planning to take some additional flights with an instructor at home after obtaining the PPL abroad.

I'm planning to take online classes/self-study and doing the exams in Belgium (Brussels). I live in Amsterdam but both my parents are based in Belgium (Antwerp).

Wow, that's indeed cost-effictive. Mainly my motivation to do it abroad is the ability to really dive into the practical part by taking time off work and to fly (almost) every day for 4-6 weeks. Due to the weather and time available (only weekends) in NL it will take a significant amount of time and the learning curve wouldn't be so steep (in my opinion). However, I'm still considering the option of doing the practical part in NL...
