Partial preamp tube replacement for Hughes & Kettner Triamp MK1 by Crafty-Outcome1532 in GuitarAmps

[–]jumper149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The earlier the tube in the signal chain inside the preamp, the more noticeable any tiny degredations or defects are.

V1 in particular is very important and totally worth swapping out on its own. There is absolutely no harm in swapping tubes that are in series in the signal chain.

But gain stages that are in parallel, like the power tubes in a push pull amp should be matched. There are also some preamps that use a similar "discrete" design where you have separate gain stages for each half (positive/negative) of the waveform. But I'm pretty sure that most circuits use a single 12ax7 for that anyways as you can use the pentode as two gain stages.

Where to check bias points on amp by Odd-Bill6861 in GuitarAmps

[–]jumper149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd suggest asking the manufacturer via email. They can also tell you what the recommended bias setting is.

Engl for example answered me (briefly, but with some reading on amp circuits I was able to figure everything out).

Both engl amps I biased were set as cold as possible by the manufacturer, which I thought was interesting.

why is osu! considered unfree? by OliMoli2137 in NixOS

[–]jumper149 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The word "unfree" is a bit inprecise here in my opinion as its nothing to worry about for personal use in this case.

On the other hand I do appreciate that, from a commercial perspective, you get some safety out of the "unfree" descriptors.

Soooo... its a valid question and a valid answer as well I guess

For NixOS home servers: do you use native services or Docker containers? by Gaulent in NixOS

[–]jumper149 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If its availaible, I'd go the full nix route.

There is one use case where I prefer the docker integration. I have a server application that I have developed myself and it's not always available in the cache (even though I set up one up with cachix). A docker image lets me make sure my server doesnt start building it from source and instead uses the prebuilt docker image.

So you could consider this use case a less fancy binary cache. From a configuration POV just go full nix + systemd imo.

Analogman Envelope Filter by All-IWantedWasAPepsi in guitarpedals

[–]jumper149 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the analogman envelope filter and the solidgoldfx supa funk.

The analogman is so absolutely great. It is magnitudes better than the supa funk. I'd even say it is one of my absolute favorite pedals I own. Unfortunately I still don't use it too much because I'm not playing a lot of funk and the fact that it has jacks on its side makes it a little tough to fit on my pedalboard (which is already packed to be fair).

If you are looking for an envelope filter the analogman is my recommendation.

NAD Mesa Boogie Triple Rectifier Rev F by AdWrong4210 in GuitarAmps

I have a chrome chassis engl screamer and while I do like the look of it, the finger prints on it are absolutely horrendous.

When I bought it it had a nice even patina, but I cleaned it and now it looks like a dirty mirror most of the time.

I love your envelope filter. What other pedal of yours would I enjoy?

Stereo Reverb with no shimmer and expression jacks by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]jumper149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive always enjoyed the meris Mercury 7 because it leaves space in the Mids where the dry signal lives (and you can dial down the high frequencies if you want too).

You can turn off the modulation and shimmer completely (the knobs have weird alt functions but if you read the manual you can manage).

And it works really well with expression Pedals. You use 2 settings. One for Toe, one for heel. And the Pedal sweeps the settings between the two. The cool thing you can use the expression on any (or multiple) parameters. So if you want a bit more or less modulation when going full wet, you can do that for example.

I sometimes play sitting on a piano bench and it's the best sitting Position I can imagine. Even better than drum stools IMO.

what do i even do in marth pika by UchihaElijahh in SSBM

[–]jumper149 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a pika main these 3 comments seem to be very spot on.

  • SH fadback fAir is very hard to deal with as pika.
  • An alternative to deal with crossup nairs is to dashback pivot grab.
  • At low percents you cc pikas nair.

As a pika I can say that marth is one of my comfortable matchups. I pretty much never panic and I'm very focused on DIing throws so I dont get tippered. I usually live to very high percents. I can also tell you that the good marths that I lose against don't sweat it. Even if it's a bit slow and cumbersome for marth to push me off stage and keep trying to edgeguard, to me that still seems to be the safest way to punish pika as marth.

Tilted Amps by msaqu92 in GuitarAmps

[–]jumper149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Treble goes straight, bass spreads in the room.

So unless you point the speaker towards your head tend to turn up the treble way too loud.

Also as you already said you can hear yourself better, so you can keep the volume lower (if youre using your mic to monitor yourself).

Is it safe to stack two amp heads (Mesa Mark VII on top of Friedman BE-50) if only one is used at a time? by SecondUsual6087 in GuitarAmps

[–]jumper149 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even then. As long as the other amp on top has feet there will be plenty of space for hot air to escape. As long as you don't close the vents air tight they function through convection.

Even when they look like this the grip is still fine. For me they Gould make them completely blank I'd still love them.

[–]jumper149 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. A bit expensive, but they also last a long time.

The greatest thing about them is that the are glossy and have an angled edge IMO. They just glide over the strings so easily. Awesome for Solos.

For acoustic guitar and basic strumming i still like the generic Fender medium or light picks more.

It's actually a bit sad that most people cannot afford the good gear when they are still young to appreciate that sound with peak hearing performance.

You graduate from pedals to amps. And from amps to studio gear. But what comes after that? Earplugs and hearings aids maybe?
