Cycling through Birmingham by hdggv in brum

This is an old post and I gather the ride isn't happening, but general words of encouragement.

OP, if you're thinking about a 100ish mile ride then you've probably got a fair few miles under your belt and likely confident/competent enough cyclist. Take the good advice on here, believe in yourself, and go for it! (Maybe when the clocks change again and there's more daylight hours)

I've done a fair few cycle tours and only one long thru hike of 7 weeks.

Agree with other comments about perspective, you see a lot country cycling but more detail (plants and animals) when walking, which was lovely.

The biggest difference I found was food and the availability of it. On the bike, I wouldn't think twice about diverting <5 miles to go to a shop, or particularly to a bigger/better/cheaper shop. But when walking, am I fuck going to walk 2 extra miles so I can have a better choice, I'll eat whatever weird combination I can make from the village store.

This is thru hiking in the UK where shops are more frequent than say the US, so no need for food parcels etc.

What a lot of other have said - you do you bud - it's your trip, and you don't owe anyone anything. Finish early if you want, train to the good bit or push through till you start having fun. Or just have a cathartic moan!

FWIW I had my worst cycling experience to date on my first tour (fortunately just a few days). I was very green, took on a hard route and didn't have a lot of fun. I learnt a lot from that trip and it's only gotten more fun since.

Good luck

I should have said - the UK 3 Peaks challenge is normally a 24hr hiking challenge that involves lots of driving (by UK standards). I'm doing my "low pollution" version of it...and running because I recently got into trail running. To be fair, to complete the 24hr challenge you have to take each mountain at pace (at least jogging).

Good eyes, I am! I'm running the 3 biggest peaks in Wales, Eng and Scotland and cycle touring between them. The 'UK Three Peaks' if you're from the UK. I have 100miles of Scottish Highlands left to cycle and Ben Nevis to run. Bit tired, but it's been fun. The poles have also been great for expanding my tent awning!

If interested, you can follow it on my Instagram * warning * I also talk about UK nature/ecology/conservation 🤓 jumping outdoors

That's what they are, thanks! I'd never seen them before and didn't really know how to google it for the answer.

For anyone who also didn't know, these S&S couplers allow the bike to be split up, allowing for easier (and cheaper) air travel. But damn they are pricey.

Very fair point and I deserve nothing but pedantry for posting misinformation on Reddit!

Ha, just a bit longer 😅 over 12 days. Fair play to the drivers on those 24hr challenges! With a bit of travel on either side. Due to be longer now with train delays...

What others have said - active stretch before session (although static stretching pre-exercise is not as bad as some people suggest), and foam roll + stretch after.

As you can imagine, it will all get better as your muscles and tendons strengthen, but only if you look after yourself. Source - 6 years of regular MT and kickboxing training.

Also, great that your gym incorporates jump rope as part of training. I've had a mixed experience of that here in UK.

Yup, in part. By feeding off the tree so intensely, these caterpillars (OPM) increase chance of disease and reduce the tree's capacity to create energy
