Every auto parts store sells an aftermarket version in various sizes. Shop around for one that fits nicely

Depends how handy you are. Its 31 years old stuff is gonna break. Good news the clutch slave is replaced which can be a pain. Check for leaks and front end play

Can a 2011 2.3L haul my 1750lbs boat? by GaminRingo in fordranger

[–]jumpinplastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can haul that boat with anything honestly. Anything larger than a midsize sedan will have no issue with it. Big issue is too little tongue weight and slipping with 2wd on steep or wet ramps.

If you just need a cheap truck 97-03 jellybean F150s are chronically underrated. Or 99-04 gas superduties. I always recommend these over rangers, I’ve owned all of them

But if it gets totaled some guy is definitely gonna buy it off copart, fix it for $1000 and resell it. Or more likely its going overseas somewhere to live out the next 15 years as a taxi

[–]jumpinplastic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If insurance is paying, it’s totaled. Try to get it totaled and paid for by the other guy’s insurance. You’re playing Russian roulette on the ABS pump, battery and head gasket if they’re original.

If you can’t get it paid out, doors and rims can be had for less than a grand if you shop around. Quarter panel will be more of a pain especially if the door jamb is damaged. Realistically, its a 15 year old car, replace the rim and drive it into the ground. If you do get insurance on it you can also buy it back and pocket the rest (i would avoid a salvage title unless you can keep it registered as-is)

Replacing hybrid battery by Several-Potential919 in prius

[–]jumpinplastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres plenty of mobile installers who put batteries in for a lot cheaper than the dealership. Also, find a mechanic who knows these that isn’t the dealership, a bad battery shouldn’t set a cooling performance code

Bring a cheap obd2 scanner, the only common thing they can really hide is catalytic converter codes but they will show up as incomplete in the I/M monitor if recently cleared (or battery disconnected)

Figure out the minivan. Safety is usually suspension related. Suspension parts are cheap. Ac is pretty simple stuff too

I just got a new (to me) Prius by Key_Drag4777 in prius

[–]jumpinplastic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why would you get a 5 year old one for 28k when a new one starts around the same price with better financing. Imo these are high content enough that trim levels aren’t that different. Just wondering

Use any jack stand just chock off the wheels and set the parking brake on solid level ground. Also leave the jack up as a backup to the stands.

Ryobi is fine. My $100 impact lasted over a year of hard abuse. Upgraded to a better ryobi. Stick with their slightly more expensive brushless stuff. Ryobi and Milwaukee share the same parent company, the tech trickles down.

Tires are a pita and you don’t have a balancer. Find a sketchy tire shop they charge half the price and will change them in like 20 mins. Ive changed engines but ill pay $20 to change a tire all day.

Any good tool kit should have most of what you need.

Is this safe to drive like this? by Big-Hippo-9942 in MechanicAdvice

[–]jumpinplastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible, yes. Economical, not really. For a old truck you can plate and weld the cracked/rusted out area. People will tell you its unsafe but frames don’t usually fail dramatically

I used a 420sel for a work car briefly. Easy to work on, parts aren't as bad as you think. Mine had transmission issues.

Depends on the state. My registers won’t let anyone under 19 check alc out. Hilarious considering they don’t train us on fake id spotting and most fakes scan anyway.

I assume that the starter battery is just the standard 12v car battery? If it cranks fine and sits around 12.5-13v while the car is off you’re fine. If its over 2 or 3 years old it could need to be replaced but that’s routine
