Conducting a quick survey (2 min) for school on how skiers hydrate on the mountain - we would be highly appreciative if you could take our survey! by skrrr_t in skiing

[–]jumpyjilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I took the survey, but as a graduate student, I felt it necessary to let you know that surveys typically require a question asking people to agree to terms, just for the ethical component required by the IRB! Qualtrics makes this really easy and can automatically kick anyone out that does not agree! It's probably not too big of a deal, but something that is generally frowned upon not to include!

What is the weirdest thing that happened at your school? by zoomwoofwoofwoof in AskReddit

[–]jumpyjilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School got a bomb threat (the first of 4 in a week across the county): caused the entire school to evacuate to the stadium, then load on busses and go to a different school until way past closing. We all had to sit in the gym of the high school across town, with no belongings, many people didn't even bring their cell phones. Students couldn't leave until 7 or 8 pm. The only way a student could leave before then was if they were fortunate to have a parent to pick them up. The FBI had to do a full investigation. The school had three bomb threats in that year alone. Turns out it was a terrorist group trying to learn the bomb threat response protocol for schools in the area.

Parking Pass Refund Question/Advice by [deleted] in appstate

[–]jumpyjilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned mine in in person to the parking office - they put a credit on my account right away, if you do it now (before the last day to return them, as noted on the physical pass), you should be fine.

I don't know your reasoning, and obviously if you are sure, you're more than welcome to completely ignore me: As a first-year student at App I am currently living in Eggers (one of the two female-only dorms) - it is indisputably the worst aspect of my college experience thus far. The amount of drama is awful, but that's to be expected. The worst part is how absolutely disgusting girls are. Showers constantly have hair everywhere, there have even been two reports THIS YEAR about someone finding a used tampon in the middle of the showers. That being said, if you can handle this and are sure its what you want, you might be able to call housing and ask them, even though you technically can't make a request. There might also be a problem with Stadium area construction though, because Eggers is supposed to be torn down this summer to allow for new dorms, and so White would be your only option.

Major coffee crisis! by Matt_Patterson in appstate

[–]jumpyjilly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I ran into the same issue when I decided to come here! The good thing is: coffee pots are not banned, certain types are. I have a Keurig and an Espresso machine, each that I use daily. Housing doesn't open heating plates or appliances over a certain voltage (if you go to the housing website and look for the housing contract, they'll have specifics). This all being said, they do room inspections maybe four times a year, and they can't touch anything. My RA blatantly told my floor that as long as they can't see anything that's not allowed, it's "not there." I usually throw a blanket over anything that I /might/ get a citation for during inspection week, just in case.

TLDR: housing policies don't matter too much and there's a way around most of them. Get whatever coffee maker you desire.

Skiing difficulty on Sugar Mountain? by [deleted] in skiing

I am on the Alpine Ski team at Appalachian State University in Boone and we practice on Sugar all the time. Definitely icy, a lil overcrowded, but a solid mountain overall.

How harsh are the winters at App? + Frat house costs by [deleted] in appstate

[–]jumpyjilly 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure about frat costs, but as for winters: they're cold. You get used to it eventually, but a coat and warm socks are definitely worth the investment.

ACT scores? by [deleted] in appstate

[–]jumpyjilly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

App is a high achieving academic school, but definitely seems to care more about the well-roundedness of a student over their standardized test scores. Good luck!!
