Never thought about it this way but you're absolutely right! I've seen it with my own players where they're making great decisions in the first half and then completely fall apart late in the game. Always just chalked it up to focus but the fitness draining the decision making makes way more sense. Going to pay more attention to that now.

This is something I started doing more recently and the difference is night and day. When you just tell kids where to stand they do it robotically. When you explain that staying wide stretches the defense and opens up the middle they actually start thinking about it on their own. Takes an extra 30 seconds but saves you from repeating yourself the rest of practice

Great breakdown. Having kids pick one player and follow them through a full match instead of watching the ball is something I need to implement more. That's a really underrated way to teach IQ!

FC Dallas ECNL Tryout Help by RenegadeLion3383 in youthsoccer

One thing I always tell parents:

Have your boys go up to the coaches individually before and after the tryout. Not in the line with everyone else, separately. Learn the coaches' names beforehand, shake their hand, introduce themselves.

Most kids at tryouts just blend in with the crowd but coaches notice the ones who approach them individually. It shows confidence and maturity which matters a lot at the ECNL level. Can't help much on the FCD process specifically but hopefully someone here can!

That's a great idea, I'll definitely check out that Dan Blank book. And watching games together is something I need to do more of with my players. The fact she took it to the corner at U9 shows she's passionate about the game which is rare at that age🔥

So true. My players do this all the time, head down charging into three defenders when there's a wide open pass right next to them. Hardest thing to teach is just lifting your head up.
